PS3 firmware 3.41 adds recommendations and...nothing else photo

The most recent PS3 firmware update that Sony released, v3.40, was a major one -- it added PlayStation Plus support, Facebook features, and a video editor, among other things. The next one is much less significant, and accordingly, it's numbered v3.41. The update will bring (drum roll, please)... game and video recommendations to the PlayStation Store!

That's right: Sony's making you update your PS3 just so they can sell you more stuff. (This smacks of the "What's New" section that they added to the XMB in the v3.00 update last September.)

You'll notice a "You May Like" section on the right side of the PlayStation Store when you're looking at a piece of content. If you click on it, you'll be treated to an Amazon-like list of items: it'll all be stuff purchased by other PSN users who bought the item you're looking at. To be fair, this is certainly some useful functionality, but couldn't it have been rolled into a more feature-rich firmware update?

The update will be available "shortly," but the actual recommendations won't start showing up until the end of the month. Also on the way: a minor PSP firmware update (v6.31) that improves system stability during the use of PSP games (and likely tries to thwart piracy, too).

I like the PSN Storefront, and I don't like it.

I love how you can browse EVERYTHING that has come out in the last two months very easily, compared to the labyrinth of the XBLA.

I hate how there are hardly any demos for any major games, and it's a pain to find specific things compared to the XBLA's easy "Alphabetical" menu (yea, the PSN has an alphabetical menu, but it's "grouped", which gets annoying when I want to find content for a specific game).

I really wish they would move to a semi-annual or quarterly update schedule, instead of heaving incremental updates at us every few weeks with features nobody cares about.

Firrmware updates are awesome. Great to pass some time with the PS3 on and not have to worry about having no games.

Useful technology?

I bought a watch once on amazon and now they recommend me nothing but watches as if I'm some inhuman freak, locked deep in my basement, putting the final touches on my watch collection...

Well I'm not. >:O

MGS Peace Walker and Persona 3 Portable have some kinda wonky glitch concerning the PSP analog nub. It doesn't show up in any other PSP game, but when it's those two it goes haywire and I have to fiddle with the stick to make it stop.

I"m hoping the firmware has fixes regarding that. I don't remember having the problem until after the prior firmware update.

Someone around here tried to convince me that PSN already had a recommend feature, and I told them they were wrong. Now if my comment history only went back that far, I would find out who it was and kick the fuck out of them FOR BEING A LIAR!!!

God.....when is sony going to learn to make their firmware updates less tiresome??

Why can't they make it that it installs while it downloads (like a certain rival HD Console and Online service)?

@gooniegoogoo2

or maybe, they can do something so radical as to have the console update itself!

now, I would pay for a feature like that!

So what you're telling me is that next time I want to play ModNation Racers, I'll have to wait 30 minutes first? Got it. Thanks, Sony!

Anti-piracy measures tucked away? thats what I thought these updates are for. Still, if not then annual updates would be better. Even the PSP ones have sucked recently.

After "hopefully" fixing my all-installs-fail-at-14%-including-downloaded-games-demos-DLC-UPDATES problem last night, I woke up, decided to check the Kane and Lynch download had worked and "BAM" Update needed.

So fuck it, I'm testing it with the update - if that doesn't work I'm gonna be stuck with old firmware and possibly not be able to play online - BUMMER.

Fingers crossed guys (at work now, so won't know for 3.5 hours).

Think it was actually a firewall issue on my wireless router.

Either way - I love Firmware updates too. Nice to feel supported.

This is what happens. I don't play my PS3 for weeks, and when I turn it on I've got stacks of slow ass updates to install. Most of which that don't do jack shit.

@12fiftyONE: Excuse me, but where does it say that? The PlayStation Blog post, which was all I had to go on for this story, didn't include the word "Flash" anywhere, and when I installed the update itself, it did not mention any features at all, let alone a Flash upgrade. I don't know where you're getting your information from, but as far as I'm aware, all that v3.41 does is prepare the PS Store for recommendations. If you could point me to a legitimate source, I'd be happy to update this post.

Updateschmupdate. Seems like very time i want to play a game there is an update. At this point i just pull the network cord and insert a disc. Sega Mega Drive collection is perfect for those "i want to play a videogame damnit" situations.

@ Kasreyn - I always make sure I have a copy of MD Collection in my bag if I ever go ANYWHERE with my PSP, its essential for everyone to have a copy.

Also got it on 360, and I have to admit, we play a lot of Streets of Rage in the house.

Oh, and 12fiftyONE appears to be going for the hat trick
