PS3 firmware 3.0 to be a 'completely new system' (Update) photo

VG247 is reporting that PS3 firmware 3.0 means big things for Sony fans when it arrives just before Christmas, bringing with it fresh features and the promise of a "completely new system." Allegedly, a massive overhaul is coming to the PlayStation 3, one that can be compared to the New Xbox Experience "in some respects."

Among the potential changes will be a long-awaited "reputation system," where players can evaluate each other. There will also be grief reporting as well, which doesn't mean you tell Sony about how sad you are over Michael Jackson. Instead, you'll be able to take screenshots of player abuse and show the PSN overlords.

The most pleasant bit of gossip is talk about players being able to download patches in the background, meaning one can do other things while waiting for excessively long updates to install. Audiophiles will also be thrilled to hear that simultaneous HDMI and digital optical outputting should also be on the way.

Until Sony confirms any of this, we can't say it is definitely coming, but everything sounds like a good feature for the PS3 and will be welcomed with open arms. As soon as more is said, we shall let you know.

[Update: Sony has commented on this, and is calling nonsense on the whole thing.

"These rumors are completely untrue, nothing has been announced or confirmed for upcoming PlayStation firmware, and this is just wild speculation," Jennifer Clark, director of SCEA product publicity, told IGN today.]

I installed update 2.8 yesterday.

Anyone know what that's about?

I'm surprised that XMB based cross game chat wasn't in that list - it's been rumoured on the last bunch of updates.

@bodybreak... most games do now have ingame music. It's up to the devs to include the option. Warhawk and Killzone both have it for online play and newer games like Sacred 2 even allow for ingame music while playing the campaign offline. (when in a game, just go to XMB and start a playlist).

really? i haven't touched warhawk in at least a year... but i've been playing killzone 2 on and off for the last couple months and i was completely unaware.

haha..

Hopefully there will be an option to keep the current XMB layout. I just got used to it!

I'd like my PS3 to work like an extra Harddrive for all my stuff.

I could load up all my shit on me PS3, install Windows 7, and then reload the shit from my PS3 to my laptop.

That'd be awesome.

Personally, I like the XMB as it is. It's just a user interface, nothing overly fancy or crowded, which suits me fine since my PS3 is used for gaming only. I'm open to change, however, so long as it's a good, unbroken thing.

@Elsa:
I can't use in-game music for Warhawk or Killzone 2 since I prefer to hear conversations with my squad mates, as well as the death throes of my fallen foes. I may give it a try in Warhawk, since the concept of "teamwork" and conversation is lost on that game's patrons, it seems. In-game music needs to be as mandatory as trophies or should be implemented via a mechanism** within the XMB for all games. I would blatantly enjoy playing through Protoype with my gothic metal/EBM blasting in the background.

**US patents be damned.

@daxelman As far as I've seen it breaks Open Remote Play, a nifty program that lets you remote play on a PC or phone instead of a PSP. Also, seems to make the XMB a little more responsive. Could be wrong on that second bit.

Not a huge fan of XMB, but I've grown used to it. Please don't change it as it is now the best we have.

cross chat would be good. even better is my music not fucking turning off when i view Jim's profile. i can do it when playing a game and it don't shut off, why can't i do it when idle in the xmb? or how about the browser not freezing every other time i use it. or getting stuck after comparing my trophies against others. or not censoring every goddam word in the irc chat but not censoring everyones personal comment (bizarro world). or how about allowing access to the rsx in linux (i can wish). or how about seeing the total file sizes of all my pictures and music and videos and games in there own categories? or sony just not releasing a shit update after their last shit update fuct shit up and just releasing good updates. background update downloads are very much needed at times. baw!

Ooo, I wanted to download patches on the background for so long... Maybe now I feel like updating some of my games, while before I just skipped it. not everyone have a good connection to the PSN, even thoug I have a 4 Mb link, I barely get 60K/s from the PSN. I blame ISP throttling.

or how about this gem, them giving us everything that home was suppose to have? goddam media sharing w/o charging me again to play the stuff i already bought once!

i love my ps3 but i do hate sony now with this kind of passion that makes lions eat their cubs. i could run that business better than them because i know what gamers want, at least what i want anyway.

The PS3 is an awesome device. I love the XMB. That said, there are some really weird issues. For instance, what Qraze already mentioned, music shutting off when you look at someones profile. Not good. I also don't really get the music editor stuff. Why can't I change the genre of a complete album or artist?

I'm curious to see what changes in the new firmware. I think it might be quite a big surprise.

I'd laugh if they got rid of the XMB after Microsoft copied the design for the NXE navigation.

Also, Sony, are you listening to me? MULTIPLE PSN LOGINS AND MULTIPLE HEADSET CONNECTIONS. Microsoft did this over a year before your console came out. Why don't we have it yet?

you can't change genres? i have one genre called "all" that i change everything to, just to see the total file size of everything.

Yeah you can change genres but you can't change a complete album or artist. It's one of the two. I'm not sure which one. It's weird.

More integration (trophies, friends list, messages, etc.) and MULTIPLE PSN LOGINS standard for the system, not just for certain games.

Can someone please explain to me why you'd want audio output for optic and HDMI simultaneously?
breakbread's Avatar - Comment posted on 06/26/2009 14:30
breakbread
Because some people (me) have a tv with HDMI, but their receiver does not. So I may want to run HDMI video to my tv, but be able to use the optical audio on my receiver.
mix's Avatar - Comment posted on 06/26/2009 15:56

@breakbread

You can do that already!
I do that with my PS3 60gig launch one, no bullshit!

I have my HDMI cord going from my PS3 to my TV and Optical from my PS3 to my receiver....works 100%

My recevier is a pass through for HDMI so it doesn't split the audio and sound apart for if. So if I did a single HDMI cord I would get picture and sound to my TV with the receiver doing absolutely nothing for sound.

You adjust the setting in the XMB as I'm willing to bet you can do it....I think maybe some stereo elites would want more options for more receivers so they could use the sound from the Optical as well as HDMI.

wait what? i have the 60g PS3 with the HDMI connected to my tv for video and the optical cable from the PS3 into my receiver and everything works perfect.yes i had to go into the setup and switch the digital audio audio out to the optical setting.am i missing something? are other PS3 owners not able to get HDMI vid and digital optical audio to work together?

If I get nothing else, give me the patch background downloads. Nothing's more annoying than thinking "Hey, it's been a while since I've played such and such game", then firing it up and finding I've got to wait on a 500MB download and I can't do anything else with my PS3 until it's done.
