PS3 firmware 2.42 update shocks and amazes photo

If you haven’t turned your PS3 lately, go ahead. Firmware update 2.42 is now available for mass consumption. There is quite an extensive list of features that were added to the service this morning including the ability to pre-register for the Home beta, an enhanced sound effect for Trophies, and a free copy of LocoRoco for next million people who download the update. Also, Sony added a new collaboration device like Folding@home that will link up your PS3 to geological centers in the US to help predict and prevent future earthquakes.

Actually, the update does very little. According to PlayStationBlog, the “update improves the playback quality of some PLAYSTATION 3 and PlayStation format software.” There have been reports that it causes Trophies to load faster, but Sony is dismissing those claims by tossing out the above sentence. So, download at your leisure and enjoy the enhanced playback quality!

Sony said Life with Playstation would be coming by the end of the month. Tomorrow is the end of the month which is also Thursday, which is also the day for PSN updates. I'm guessing this is a preparation for Life with Playstation.

Last night was a very irritating night. I first put money in my account, then I bought Pain. Then I had to upgrade Pain. Not a big deal, doesn't really bother me. Once it's done, before I can do anything, I need to get 2.42 to do anything. Then everything needs to install, then there were a bunch of files that had to be updated. Well, at least everything works, except for the new slowdown on my PS3.

"prevent future earthquakes."

That's the point where I realized I was being lied to and when I began laughing my ass off.

I was talking about these kinds of updates a year or so ago. These updates are merely an update to the OS to better stream the data and to lower the footprint of the OS. When they say improve "some" titles, there talking about any currently that are either developed poorly Rainbow Six and Madden come to mind, or those that are future products that suck up alot of resources such as Resistance 2 and Killzone 2.

This is a "typical" OS process, and you will see alot more of them and hopefully more continuously the lower the OS footprint the more power is open for not only additional XMB things but the processes of HOME and other games.
