PS3 firmware 2.01 available, hopes to un-break PS3 photo

If you've been experience stability issues with your PlayStation 3 since the last firmware update, your days of woe may be coming to an end. Firmware version 2.01 is now available for download, and it fixes the following:

  • Stability during playing some PLAYSTATION 3 format software has been improved.
  • Stability of System Software including Internet Browser and Information Board has been improved.
  • Stability of the upscaler for PlayStation 2 format software has been improved. (Playability of PlayStation 2 depends on model)
  • [Remote Start] feature is changed to avoid unintended power on.

We're not going to lie -- we think stability in a system is pretty awesome, so while this small update isn't thrilling, it's welcome. Now all Sony has to do is sit back and wait for the next wave of complaints to come in, you whiners. "Oh, my system keeps freezing," or "I can't play any games!" Pffft!

Call us when your PS3 shows a red ring.

There's a RROD theme for the ps3. Does that count?

The CoD4 problem was apparently server maintenance on IW's part, but I do wish a bit more testing would go into the firmware updates before they come out. The few problems they've had have been resolved quickly, but they could also have been resolved before the update was out of the gate.

Prevention > fast response.
Fast response = still damn good.

Does this mean the effectiveness of the upscaling is improved? Because it looks awful for me normally.

I sure hope this resolves the mp4 HD streaming issues that were introduced in 2.00... As in Sony completely broke it!

The only problem I was having was that the PS3 would auto start at random times throughout the day. Finally, had to unplug it because it was bugging me so much.

The past 3 nights I've been playing assassins creed it froze up after about 5 mins of gameplay. I'd restart and it would be fine the rest of the night. But last night after the update no freezing.

I’ve been playing a good amount of Warhawk since the v2.00 update, and the only problem I’ve had is this one (I’m referring to the first problem listed there). This update doesn’t list that fix specifically, so I guess I’ll just have to plug in my iPod classic and see if it crashes my PS3! Oh well...at least this shows that Sony is working their asses off to make improvements to the system, and that’s heartening.

Nope, I just tried it...my PS3 immediately froze when I plugged in my iPod. Damn it, Sony, get your act together!

i just updated with the 2.01 and so far so good, playing Drakes Fortune right now with smooth sailing (wow this game looks great)more graphics like these and PS3 could take the number 1 slot away from my 360,but the 360 still warms my cockles. i'm glad i waited and didnt install the 2.00,since i have the 60GB version that seem to be the box that people have had the problems with

I had a lot of COD4 server problems after this update, but I convinced myself it was IW's fault, seeing as how I played for two hours after updating before the problems even started.

But, a lot of forum members on GF thought it was the 2.01.
