PS3 firmware 1.9 hits Japan, rest of the world waits photo

In their never ending quest to make watching Talladega Nights as enjoyable as possible, Sony has once again upgraded the PlayStation 3 firmware. This new firmware, version 1.9, adds a slew of new features to Sony's already robust console:

• Ability to rearrange games on the XMB
• Option menu now includes “eject disk”
• Press triangle to eject games/CDs/movies in the XMB
• XMB backgrounds
• Change the folder classification
• Emoticons
• Change CD output to 44.1/88.2/176.4kHz
• Force 24Hz output for Blu-ray over HDMI
• Change PS3 video settings in-game
• “Bit Mapping” in the “Music Setting”
• Save AVCHD type animations from a Memory Stick
• Change settings like upscaling while playing PS and PS2 games
• Add bookmarks
• Web browser security function in the browser’s tool section
• Avatar moves during audio visual chat

While the firmware is already available in Japan, others will have to wait a bit longer before they can eject Talladega Nights from their console without moving off of their couch. Word has it North America and Europe will see this update later this week.

[Thanks to SuMizzle for the tip. Thanks to NeoGAF for the image. Thanks to ThreeSpeech for the list of features and for spelling "firmware" wrong in the title of their post.]

I think we can all share a collective "Meh.."

My jabs aside, I'm not "meh" about this at all. It's nice to see that Sony are taking the time to update their console on a regular basis. When MS updates the 360, it's this huge blow-out of features at one time. Sony is leaking out features a little at a time, a method which I prefer.

@ Nick, how many of the listed features for this update (1.9) actually float your boat?

4 Cereal.

I don't know. It still makes me meh.

I prefer the dashboard updates on the 360, mostly because MS discloses what's coming in the updates, as opposed to the hunt and peck guessing game of Sony's updates.

The list of supported changes comes officially from NeoGAF, and not from any quoted source at Sony...

yeah I don't like these random updates to the OS. Half of this shit should have been established before they shipped the system.

The only feature they need to add is the ability to UPSCALE 720p games to 1080i instead of downscaling them to 480p. The 360 upscales ALL games to 1080i.. why is the PS3 scaler such a POS??!!

I would very much appreciate 1080i. I have an old CRT TV that only does 480i and 1080i. Me = Sad Panda when playing PS3.

@ bhive:

Depends what your idea of "floats" means. Honestly, nothing is groundbreaking here. Being able to set my background is nice, being able to change upscaling preferences while playing DVD movies/PS2 games/PSX games is nice, and re-organizing my games on the XMB could be helpful.

But really, there's nothing here that will drastically change my PS3 experience. It's just nice to have SOME changes.

prob because Sony takes its time to make sure shit is right and doesnt RROD the PS3? or could do like 360 & launch all shit n make the system fail? I mean if you compare systems which one is having issues.

its obvious PSN is headed a whole different way than XBL & wiichannel, its a milestone based project. Notice I didnt say better, but different, could be better or worse, only time will tell.

@ Nick. I agree that some change is better than nothing. But there are so many things that current PS3 owners are pining for and aren't getting, whilst they bring out little things.

The PS3 needs wider codec support for movies and music. It needs better media center support (aka read my iTunes library). It needs better scaling support (that or I need a new TV).

Don't get me wrong though. I love my PS3. I'm looking forward to a lot of games and still enjoying the ones I have, but I still want a lot of things to happen. They made the PS3 out to be the end all consumer entertainment device. I just want it to actually do that.

I don't see anything too exciting about this release but just like the PSP, all these little updates add up over time. I appreciate that Sony continues to add some cool functionality when they could just tell users to suck it as easily. I hope that 2.0 is not too far off and sets the stage for Home and a revamped PSN.

@ bhive

Word on at least supporting Xvid encoded videos. The lack of it is keeping me from watching at least half of my AMV library on it.

4 Cereal, it's open source... What's the hold up on Xvid support? And, since Xvid decodes Divx (prior to what version 6) that would work for me. I just hate re-encoding my movies is all.

I’d love to see DivX/XviD support, but they probably won't do that for copyright issues. I mean, it'd be awesome if I could watch the 624×352 TV shows that I download from torrents on my LCD HDTV — but I don’t see that happening. Obviously, WMV is a no-go because it's a Microsoft codec. But I agree: I'm tired of pretty much only being able to play AVC- or H.264-encoded MPEG-4 media, which is relatively rare at this point. I'd love to be able to play the HD-quality videos I download from IGN Insider, for example, but they're almost all encoded in WMV HD. Still, though, whenever these upgrades come to the North American version, I’ll be quite happy...XMB backgrounds are something I’ve wanted for a long time, and it’s also really annoying to have to quit out of a game just to change the video output settings. Keep up the good work, Sony...in-game XMB in v2.00 FTW!
