Lovely. I haven't turned on my PS3 in a couple days. So now I get to sit through a useless update that's been cracked before I even knew it was out. Nice, Sony. Nice.

Bloody hell, could you whine more? It's a small inconvenience, but you somehow make it sound like you're getting a prostate exam. I turned my PS3 on last night when I read about the update and had it install while I was sleeping. Really, though, how dare they attempt to hinder piracy? As a person who owned a business that suffered greatly from piracy, including cutting my workforce down by more than half before eventually selling, seeing you continually cry over something so amazingly minor is kind of sickening. I kind of do hope they churn out more updates his year than the staggering SEVEN from last year; it will actually be worth it to watch you swell and explode with righteous fury.
Firmware updates and constant trophy notifications are my least favorite things about PS3.Updates are especially heinous when you live in a place with crap bandwidth.
Honestly why bother updating unless it is either an actual fix for their security hole or some new feature.

Hackers don't even try and give Sony the benefit of the doubt by waiting. They just immediately jump on the oppurtunity to debunk the latest firmware within hours

It really doesn't matte how long it takes to download this patch/firmware, if it isn't effective then it's a waste of time.

It wouldn't be so bad of the firmware actually fixed the problem for good but Sony seems to be fighting a losing battle and it's the consumers time they are battling it on.

I agree with Pokota, Jim you sound like a winny little bitch everytime you complain about a dowloading/installing bar on the ps3. Sony has the right to protect its products and unfortunately it is at the expense of consumers because hackers want to run unsigned code. Call it homebrew or whataver, piracy means less revenue for developers. Anyone that claims that they hacked their console to run homebrew programs and not for pirated games, is like watching porn in your computer and not masturbate! Come on Jim, you know this is true!!!

don forget you can update your ps3 via a usb device. which im sure your computer can download these updates faster via its connection. so do that then install it via usb. there just saved you 5 hours.
There's got to be a viable alternative to this. I mean, it doesn't greatly inconvenience me, I'll just play on the PC or wii whilst it's doing it's thing, but if it isn't preventing piracy then what use is it? I'd be curious to know how Microsoft prevent pirates on the 360. Does the 360 have the same piracy problems?

Honestly, these firmware updates are about as important as this story. Were just beating a dead horse here. We get it. Sony made a firmware update that is utterly useless. I don't necessarily agree with pokota, but this story is just troll bait at this point. I hate firmware updates just as much as the next man, but it didn't matter if the PS3 got hacked because it already had ridiculous firmware updates. Hell it takes forever just to update a game you haven't played for months. Popped in Uncharted 2 and there were update out the ass. It was ridiculous how long it took.
This one took a long time for me. Jumped on to watch some Hulu before bed and by the time it was done updating my wife didn't want to watch anymore.
We are less than 10 years away from corporations having PMCs and nonsense like hijacking the PS3 willexaverbate that legal race for the CO. To protect their interests. my console is hacked. i don't care all that much for the psn, i don't like many online multiplayer games, i do like playing my backups, playing snes, genesis, saturn, homebrews, arr.
i won't be updating for a very long time. sony may own the psn and they can do whatever they need to do to secure it, but i own my ps3 and i will choose whatever i want to do with it.

Completely agree with this article. I wish Sony would just stop this, or AT LEAST add one new feature with each security bandaid that will be ripped off within minutes.
How about, to start, the ability to fast-forward audio files (podcasts, for example) at more than 1.5X? The PSP has been able to do this for like a decade... PS3 can't pull it off?

This issue is a bit more important than homebrew, however, though Sterling leaves that out. The security issues now are about people with custom firmware connecting to PSN, which raises the question of cheating.

See the other day I got Left for Dead 2 on Xbox, (despite already owning it for Mac and PC) my Xbox needed an update to add in a feature that had previously been taken out that I, nor anyone here at Dtoid (who posted on the story) wanted, L4D2 needed it's own update, then my Macbook needed updating to put the new App store on it, which is pretty shit anyway, and my PC needed it's Java updating (which failed) and will no doubt remind me again soon, then I got a new game from Steam, APOX, after downloading it needed, you guessed it, an update! and after all that, it was shit anyway. Not to mention multiple apps a day needing (luckily automatic) updates on my phone.

Oh dear... If this is how bad Jim flips out by a pointless firmware upgrade, I hope he never experiences a firmware upgrade of any kind on PSP when one is out of juice and has to be recharged ^^;
You'd think the PS3 had exclusivity to patches & updates. I'm glad I don't game on my PC anymore. Having to search for patches, & selecting from some list of servers in various parts of the world, only to be then shoved into a queue to wait for 15 minutes before even starting an update that was limited by the server to 50kb's a second (Medal of Honour:Airbornes patch was a fucking ballache).
At least I don't have to search for these updates. It wasted all of 5-10 minutes (tops) of my morning, & if you don't need PSN at that particular point, leave it, play a game, & do it when you don't want to use the PS3, or have to go online.
