PS3 Facebook firmware update drops today photo

The next big PS3 firmware update -- v3.10 -- is today’s big firmware update.

In a recent interview with 1UP, SCEA’s Eric Lempel apparently revealed that the teased 3.10 update launches at some point today. He also mentioned that the nerds who create these updates have been working on this latest for a bit of time.

“I’ll just say that it’s been in the works for quite some time,” Lempel said before adding, “It’s never been easy to integrate new content into the PlayStation Network. We’ve had this planned for a while now.”

Sony dished out the details on the 3.10 update just a few days ago. Adding real Facebook integration, 3.10 will allow PS3 owners to stream their Trophy and PS Store information into their Facebook accounts. The update also provides a hook to developers to add their own unique Facebook feed support into their games.

For more information hit this post for a video walkthrough that shows off some of the other much-needed tweaks being added, or just wait until the update hits this morning or afternoon. Your call.

"a day late and a dollar short, sony."

Or even a day after a shit subscription only version and free? No Dollars required.

I'm stoked by this, Microshaft have been going on and on about Facebook to try to make it sound like some kind of life changing, payment justifying addition, while Sony are all like "meh, you want Facebook? Here you go."

I look forward to checking this out later, as a facebook user it will be nice to link my gaming and my Facebooking.

Just glad I don't have to pay to get it, yet another free item on the long long list of PS3 features.

Facebook integration really isn't that necessary. In saying that, I can't wait to link my accounts. *squeal*

lol @ “It’s never been easy to integrate new content into the PlayStation Network."
It's not that big of a deal, but it's a good example of how bad Sony is at spinning things like this, and watching what they say. Any other company would just say it took so long because they 'added so much functionality', but Sony says 'it was just hard to do'. That will certainly help them defeat the camp that claims the PS3 is hard to program for.

I wish they'd get their act in gear, so we could have a real neck and neck public opinion of the consoles, like the good ol' days. Then we'd see a lot more common features from the more direct competition.

Is this what the console war has become? Facebook? I won't use it on 360 and sure as hell won't on my PS3.

@Draxxlith - Personally I like the lack of "spin".

MS - Wow this Facebook is fucking awesome! You're really gonna want to pay for Gold LIVE to get this, it's the best thing since sliced DVD's!

Sony - you want Facebook? - Here's some Facebook, it was a ballache, but we did it for you, payment? Nah, don't worry about it.

Spin is not a good thing.

There better be an opt out option! Ugh... I didn't want trophies on my PS3, I don't want Facebook on my PS3. If I wanted all that crap I would have bought an Xbox. Whey doesn't Sony understand that not all PS3 owners want everything the Xbox has.

I want an opt out option!!!

@JiRINC - Hit "browser", Hit "start", Type Destructoid.com, Hit "start" again. Could even then hit "select" then "add to favourites"

Job done.

Although, I tend to have to hit the logo when I come here from my favourites.

Iplayer kicks the shit out of Facebook, I mean it's piss easy to use Iplayer on your big HD TV!?!? But Facebook is going to add yet another level to the already awesome PS3.

are people actually looking forward to this? i have a laptop for facebook time wasting, n a ps3 for games. i doubt im gonna update my facebook status telling people i got a trophy...is there any reason to have this if u have a computer? 360 owners, what, if any, are the upsides to having facebook on the console against using it on a laptop or something?

@SexChoc
It's not the spin I was wanting, I'm wanting the more direct competition that would come with it.
For an exaggerated example, it would be cool if Sony and MS were at each others throats so much that the next xbox gets the ps3's beloved BluRayz, and the next playstation kicks the online up a notch.
As it stands, sony is so aloof that they claim they're not directly competing, and therefore aren't trying as hard as they could be.

@sexualchocolate most people who have a 360 already pay for online services. facebook doesnt cost more; no one is going to say to themselves," heay, now that facebook is on xbl, ill get it!"

the bottomline is that you get what you pay for. XBL is light years beyond sony's free online services. thats inarguable

Chocolates, Shut up will ya? I haven't heard MS make a big deal of this other than the announcing it and then the odd little reminder that the update is coming. Oh, to live in your strange little world. Facebook on the Xbox is pretty shit, though.

It's cool, just don't turn the Facebook options on. The preview video shows that it's completely optional.

You know, I'd appreciate getting a feed of blips from say, Dtoid twitter, or something unobstrusive from my facebook friends. This dedicated app, sectioned off business NBD, save for getting easy access to view pictures bigscreen style.

I'll have to check this out when I get home.

I don't use Facebook and this isn't gonna make me start. I don't want it on my 360, I don't want it on my PS3.

That being said, I know there are quite a few people out there who do want this integration and good for them. It'll be interesting to see what Microsoft does now that the PSN moves _another_ step closer (for Free) to XBL Gold.

Yep. Only another 6 or 7 miles worth of "steps" before they start actually competing.

Facebook is nothing. Give us REAL features.

I have a myspace with a friends list consisting of 90% bands, so I don't really need another "social networking site".

at best anyone I add will see how I spend my time day in and day out... work, guitar, PS3... and weed.

Ok then, maybe I live under a rock, or whatever. I haven't heard that much in the way of MS making a big deal out of Facebook on the 360. I've heard a certain amount of hype concerning the entire update, but not a massive amount of focus on Facebook. Of course there is a certain amount of happiness regarding the integration of a few features from FB, but I haven't heard any crowing about it, or using against Sony, as SC seems to imply, but then maybe that's my rock I'm living under?

Hi everyone, here’s an early peek at PlayStation 3 (PS3) firmware update (v3.10). The latest update incorporates Facebook into the PS3 experience. By linking your PlayStation Network account to your Facebook account, you will have the option for the PS3 to automatically update your Facebook News Feed with Trophy and PlayStation Store activity. This update Promotional Items also enables developers to set specific criteria in their titles to publish additional game information to your News Feed. You can then check out your updates, and those of your friends, on Facebook, Twitter, and other social media favorites through the PS3’s built-in web browser.
