PS3 DVR is DRM-free?

PS3 DVR is DRM-free? photo

I know: what PS3 DVR? We haven't talked much about it, but it's out there, and it seems to be kicking ass, according to the reviews on the UK Amazon site. This little device has a two built in TV tuners that let you record and play back anything you'd like to and from the PS3's hard drive. Oh, and did I mention it records in high-definition?

The latest on this amazing device is that it does all of ths without the digital rights management hassle. From CVG's review of the device

...brilliantly, you can export videos to your PS3's XMB menu as MPEG-2 video (despite rumours suggesting the feature had been removed). From there you can use it like a normal file - watch it on your PS3, put it on PC, transfer it to your PSP... whatever you like.

This makes this Europe-only device even sexier to those who can't have it yet. I hope Sony has this ready for us soon.

What do you think? Would you use this?

I have a new telly with built-in freeview but no ariel. Does anyone know if I can just use this as an ariel, while being able to record anyway?

If they brought it here (and I still had my S3), I'd totally use it.

I could see myself buying one of these if they bring it over here. I wonder how much it would cost though.

@Clance - from what I understand, it uses a single coax aerial cable feed in and a USB out into the psTriple. The output is just your ps feed into your TV/Monitor

@Dale
It says on ComputerandVideogames.com that you can't record in HD.

"Don't expect miracles from the picture quality - you may have your PS3 hooked up via HDMI, but you're still essentially watching a standard definition signal so you'll have the same grainy picture you get with Sky TV or any decent-quality Freeview box."

From CVG's review of the device

@Takeshi - You record what you put in, so for the most part that is just SD. However, there are the HD BBC/ITV channels available now and more due soon over the aerial airwaves. Not sure on if the connector would fit in, but you should be able to use Freesat as well - uses your Sky dish for freeview over sat connection.

Unfortunately, as with all TV - sh*t in equals sh*t out...

Neat idea but seeing as I don't want to invest in Cable/Sat.....

Sony of all people disposing of DRM in a high profile device such as this? Get out of the proverbial town!

@Triox

Might sound retarded, but can you connect something that picks up HD signals into that coaxial input?

Bog standard coax aerial connection is fine, Sky dishes generally use "F-sockets" - they have a screw collar around them and may be too big for it. As to what is actually inside and how it operates, not sure so cant really say what else you can connect I'm afraid. Not sure what is on the end of Cable TV connections but am guessing there are some other bits inside those decoders...

If i could use it maybe. But 99.999% of U.S. HDTV cable stations wont work on it because they're sent w/ a provider's specific encryption. The only way to get by that presently is to have a Tivo Series 3 hacked.

Thats good to hear, though it wouldnt have bothered me too much if there was some DRM.
It's the same with the inability to recieve HD signals - I wont even noticed and / or care about this.
The best part of this device has to be the twin tuner - the ability to watch whilst you record aswell as the feature that should allow you to record whilst in game is making this a fecking great bit of kit
