PS3 and 360 sales neck and neck in the UK photo

Think that the PS3 doesn't sell? It certainly would seem that way from the general reaction to the pricey console, but apparently UK buyers don't seem to mind. According to MCV, it looks like ChartTrack research shows the two consoles are in very close competition for highest sales volume. However, 55 percent of all PS3 sales were in the first four weeks following console’s launch, so some of the sales can likely be attributed to buyer excitement for new products.

Even though the struggle is more or less equal now, ChartTrack director Dorian Bloch believes that the 360 will pull ahead of PS3 in the long run, as PS3's price tag and lack of great software will hold it back from becoming the top selling console. God knows Sony doesn't like to be told they are wrong, even if millions of people chant it in unison. Please Sony, we WANT to love it like we loved the PS2. We know you can make it happen!

[Thanks Justin!]

Well, let's just wait and see what the halo launch did for the 360 sales.

I'm under the impression that Europe in general likes Sony consoles more than the others. I guess Sony was always better at worldwide simultaneous releases than MS and certainly Nintendo are.

Really though, the UK/Europe market isn't as large as the US market. Not that I don't want Sony to succeed with the PS3 (I do), but this data is one of those things that could be interpreted many ways. They're doing well to equal the sales of the 360, but it's a smaller more accepting market for their product.

That's just...That's just highly improbable.

I want Sony to get their collective heads out of their asses and stop trying to lie to me, get their stuff together and start utilizing their entire media catalog to give XBLA some serious competition.

I don't want to go into an entire rant again, but yeah.

I want the PS3 to live up to its potential, Sony just isn't steering the ship well atm.

Who the hell are the 15 people that bought the old DS? Besides, doesn't everyone in Japan already own two?

The reason those PSP sales are surging is because of the new PSP Slim, and the Crisis Core version. I'll admit though, I like the fresh new stuff coming out for PSP instead of the casual games/tired remakes on the DS

"fresh new stuff"? PSP?

Crisis Core is based off of FFVII.

How long has that cow been milked?

Teat's run dry, IMO.

There is a lot of brand loyalty to Sony in the UK. The PlayStation 3 is also seen as a status symbol of sorts out here as well -- people get them because their friends are. This doesn't surprise me that the PS3 is doing so well.

Okay, anything OTHER than Squeenix products. We all know where they stand in this day of age.

With Microsoft always being called the Evil Empire shouldn't that picture be reversed?

LOL@ Blocker's pic.

But seriously folks, its not surprising. While everyone talks about MS dominating the US you guys forget that there's a HUGE market in Europe, Middle East (EU and Middle East release dates are the same),Japan and the rest of Asia. And in all these places, Nintendo and Sony have a higher brand value in comparison to MS. As Sterling rightly pointed out, it's seen as a status symbol among other things.

And yes the PSP line up this year > DS.

Can we see some numbers for this? Every chart I look at, the PS3 is still lacking in monthly sales, weekly sales, total sales.... what statistic is actually close?

It'd have to be a status symbol with the prices they rape Europe with. Even with the ludicris taxes tacked on they still charge more than what we pay here. Maybe they make up the money they lose in Japan and the US by raping their European and Eurasian customers.

Btw, although my friend has one, I will be waiting for it to come down in price further.

As I read it, I don't know what it means! As far as I'm aware the XBOX 360 is the market leader in the UK, and sales of the PS3 were much faster in its first month than the 360, but the 360 has a higher install base, and more month on month sales.

People don't realise that in the UK, there is only one game that rules them all, and thats Grand Theft Auto. Now its multiformat, the cheapest format you can play that on is the 360...

Right, living in the U.K. I can tell you this.

The people of the U.K. are a bunch of FPS and sports games tards who wouldn't enjoy a decent adventure game if it slapped them in the faces.

There I said it.

I'm not surprised that the PS3 is doing well here, we're a bunch of idiots who would go crazy over the 25th incarnation of Killzone instead of something which actually required thought.

Does this mean Sony will start pandering to the UK market? Will we start seeing more crumpet-themed platformers? Perhaps an RTS set in occupied India? A Maddie McCann adventure (think Ico but way creepier)?

Yeah, that last one was totally uncalled for. Insensitive, unfunny jokes and cultural stereotypes FTW!
