The good press for Sony just hasn't stopped this week. The BBC has praised the PlayStation 3 for its iPlayer functionality, describing the response to the new feature as "amazing" and revealing that Sony's Black Box o' Blu-ray is now responsible for 10% of the player's viewers.
"User response to our new iPlayer for PS3 has been amazing," beams BBC Online Media Group controller Anthony Rose. "Although it's less than a week since we launched, iPlayer on PS3 now accounts for a massive 10% of all iPlayer viewing, overtaking Mac (8.5%) to be our 2nd most popular platform for IP-delivered content."
The iPlayer is a new addition to the PS3's roster of abilities, allowing users to stream BBC TV and radio content via the XMB. The fact it's overtaken the Mac is a huge coup for Sony, and proof that sometimes loading your game console up with non-game features can work out quite well. I may have to make use of it myself.

Destructoid is an open discussion community. You don't need to "audition" to post a comment - just speak your mind. We respect differing opinions on the site, so have at it. Be smart, funny, insightful, clueless, or cute -- but back it up with substance. Keep your cool, keep it fun. We only ask that you act respectfully and above all: don't be a troll and ruin it for everyone else. Don't bring down gamers or we'll, you know, gently shoot you in the face and stuff you into a flaming mailbox. Each comment is your opportuntity to make this community awesomer. Is that even a word?
Avoiding the banhammer only requires common sense: spamming, trolling, racism, NSFW stuff, and other forms of sucking will not be tolerated. If anyone is griefing please report abuse. Be good. Don't suck!
As for the iplayer it fucking kicks ass! Why would anyone want to use the iplayer on a PC when you can watch it on that 37" HD LCD with a few simple controller clicks!?
To be fair, i watched more of it when you had to put it in your browser (that's right folks, a console with a browser! OMFGWUT) but that's only because i've temporarily moved into a house with no WiFi and one socket on the modem, plugged straight into a miserable old woman's PC who won't let me WiFi up the house. - But I've got the router and cables in my bag! I just need to plug it in and swap the settings! Pleeeeeeeezzzzeeee!
God damn it.
Sorry, having PSN withdrawal. - 6 weeks SC, 6 weeks and you'll have your very own 20mb WiFi. 6 fucking weeks.
You forgot the beard.
1. The Guitar Hero guitars: These are videogame peripherals, and available on the PS3. This makes the header game-related.
2. There are many pistols in the photograph. A pistol is a type of gun, many of which appear in PS3-exclusive AAA videogame Killzone 2.
3. The man in the photograph looks like a fat woman, which is described in porn as a Big Beautiful Woman, or BBW. BBW is one letter removed from BBC. This is what we call a wordplay.
4. The man is 10% body hair. This represents the 10% of iPlayer users on PS3.
Though I should ask how that picture of me got out...
Haven't heard of the iPlayer... but Sony needs to start showing Canadians some form of video love! We can't download movies/tv shows... and to my knowledge don't as yet have have any network TV links that fully support the PS3 (and certainly none that are directly linked in the XMB).
:(
I resent this statement, because it implies a lack of effort. You have no idea how much work goes into getting these headers.
I feel bad though because I've seen that header image before ;_;
I was just thinking about that. Just where do you find this stuff, Jim? On second thought, nevermind.
What annoys the hell out of me is the Subtitles (I'm over the moon they've included that feature, believe me) are so damn tiny, I can't read them. Imagine regular subtitles, now shrink them to about 15% of the size. Yeah. Fuck that.
not unless you use a proxy server.
I do not know whats more disturbing, the guy in the picture or Jim for posting it.
Enlighten me.
Like, loads n' stuff.
10% is great compared to the wii's measley 0.001% though
4. The man is 10% body hair. This represents the 10% of iPlayer users on PS3."
I love you Jim.
Now this service sounds great and it looks like lots of people enjoy it, no eta for the states?
Anyway, onto the story, I use the player a heck of a lot on the PS3 now, ot's far more convenient booting it up from the console than turning on my laptop, waiting for it to start up, and them going to the website. That and I can watch it on my 52' HDTV, lokks great on it.
I don't believe that works. The websites usually check your IP address. I can't even see the Movie store when I log in on an American account for instance. iPlayer doesn't work over here either. It has nothing to do with Sony but with the companies themselves. The BBC doesn't allow people from outside the UK to watch their stuff. Which is because the UK residents pay for it through taxes and sorts. Which makes sense if you think about it. Same goes for other countries probably. I know for a fact that's the case here in The Netherlands.
