PS3 80GB Motorstorm pack $499 seen in the wild photo

We knew it was coming, and now it has hit the shelves. Even before the new 40GB PS3 has hit most shelves, the 80GB model is seeing price updates today, dropping down from $599 to $499. Walmart.com has it listed for $499.82 today, and Amazon has also put the new price into effect.

If you're thinking about a PS3 for the holidays or the future in general, this is the one you'll want. There's 40 extra gigabytes of hard disc space, and there's the included Motorstorm, but more importantly, this model is the last of the "classic", backwards compatible PS3s. You're saving $100, and all of that other stuff is great, but this is the last of the systems to let you play your PS2 games in upscaled glory. That's not bad for $100 more than the "challenged" upcoming 40GB model, and unless you're still maintaining hater status, you might want to jump on this.

Also, both retailers (as well as many of the others) remind us that the 5 free Blu-ray movies deal is still in effect (and has been upgraded with a slightly better selection).

[BS3 Owner, you have my thanks]

Damnit! I bought my 60gb PS3 a few months back, for $599. No Motorstorm, no extra 20 gigs, no 5 free Blu-rays....and I have yet to play a game on it for more than 10 minutes (although I do watch movies on it...)

Lesson learned...

Anyone know if rumble is included in this package? I so long for that sweetest of vibrations....

Oh GOD that sounds...wrong and INVITING.

Costco is better-for the same price they throw in an extra controller and a bluray remote.

yes many retailers already had their prices updated the day it was announced (as it was supposed to be immediate) Also, many retailers are throwing in free stuff for the 60gig version - which is even better backwards compatibility. circuit city throwing in a free controller, bestbuy a game or a controller, walmart a free game and remote... etc etc

If anyone finds a 60 gig at Gamestop, you can choose a free game that is made by Sony.

Look, I don't care if this thing costed $200, the fact is, there aren't enough enough worthwhile games currently available on the system to actually make it worth buying, even if it's cheaper than it was.
I have nothing against Sony, but the idea of buying a system based only on future potential has always been a stupid idea.

I really want to want to buy one. But there's no games that I want, and none in the foreseeable future that interest me. Maybe White Knight Story but that's about it (I don't want MGS4). However if I wanted a BlueRay player I'd definitely buy a PS3, but I don't feel like investing in a new media at the moment.

Um... PS3 makes a great Blu-Ray player I hear. That's affordable in that sense.

I learned my lesson when I bought my Wii... NEVER BUY A SYSTEM WITHOUT ADEQUATE SOFTWARE TO BACK IT UP.

I won't get a PS3 until there are at least 5 must-play titles out for it. Oh, and rumble.

I used to laugh at the whole "consumer confusion" arguement re: multiple SKUs. Like gamers were too stupid to understand the difference between the Core and Premium X360s (a popular SONY argument 2 years ago). I'm not laughing anymore.

What level of backwards compatibility does THIS particular model offer?

Rumble and BC for 400$

thats the only thing that'll get a PS3 in my apt

if i recall, the 80GB version has software Backwards compatability; so it's so-so BC, like the 360... If you want true BC, then you need the hardware which is in the 60gb version; which is why it's good that stores are offering the 60gb version with free add ons to make it a worthwhile buy since it costs the same as the 80gb.

it dropped in price last thrusday.. the moment i saw that online on the playstation forums i called up the nearest ebgames near my job to confirm the price and to ask if they had any in stock, they had 3 left

the had 2 left by the time i showed up an hour later..

as for people complaining about the rumble, people act like it was sony's choice.. imergine put a halt on it asking for money.. microsoft went through the same thing only they opted to settle

its cool when its there on my 360 but when i play on the ps3 i dont miss it

I saw this today while looking at shit for my kids for xmas on toysrus.com it was 500 bucks, which is odd considering the sunday flyer yesterday said 600.

All Canadian stores fixed the prices immediately, online at least. After I read about it I went on Best Buy/ Future Shop sites and they where listed at 500$.

I know what I'm buying in a week or 2.

No lie, no fucking lie, I would start saving money for a PS3 if they hadn't cut out BC. What the fuck? I had to choke on that rod once with my 360 refusing to play some of my favorite games, and I'm not about to do it again. I still have a pretty large library of PS2 games that I actually still play from time to time.

The GameStop across the street from my apartment had the $499 price written on a PS3 poster in ballpoint pen. I asked them about it cause until I saw it today I had no idea of any cut on the 80gb bundle.

Lack of backwards compatibility on the new SKUs can't last forever. It just can't... If Sony knows what's good for them.

If I were to buy one, I'm not sure if I'd rather get the 60GB one with full backwards compatibility or trade that in for limited compatibility and 20GB more space.

To all those who asked about rumble: Sorry, gang, but the DualShock 3 is coming out in Japan soon, and Japan only. Europe and North America have to wait until sometime early in 2008. As I’ve said before, I’m glad I never bought a second SIXAXIS; I’m just going to hold off picking up an extra controller until the DualShock 3 comes out. All I know is, they sure as hell better not charge any more for it than $49.99...

the BC in the 60 is awesome. I have 170+ ps2 games and they all run perfectly as far as I can tell (most of them even better now then the ps2 with upscaling and all). I think the 80 gig had only ok BC from what I heard.

As for PS3 games, I've got like 14 games (9 disc games and 5 downloadble) for the ps3 now and I've certainly had fun playing those so far as I wait for the release of the system seller games. All in all, I very satisfied with the syetem. I've grew out of system hating when I was 12. it surpriseses me that grown adults find it in themselves to hate a machine so much. But hey, to each his(her) own.

*JavTheGreat: "If anyone finds a 60 gig at Gamestop, you can choose a free game that is made by Sony."

For real? I'll ask about that, since I know they have it in stock. If so, it shall be mine. Screw the gimped BC in the 80GB model. It won't run the games I have at full speed.

Oh, wait. R&C launches today, right? Damn, maybe the 60 won't be in stock.
