PS3 2.00 firmware update causing system issues?

PS3 2.00 firmware update causing system issues? photo
     Updates

PlayStation 3 owners will tell you that you don't really have a choice when it comes to firmware updates for the system -- users are prompted to update as soon as the system is switched on. Because of this, by now, all PS3 owners should have downloaded and installed the version 2.00 firmware update. New news of system issues stemming from this update may have users cursing the forced firmware.

We've received word via the Destructophone that some users are experiencing system issues post 2.00 update, with complaints ranging from slow menus and disc read errors to some system failures. Even some of our very own Destructoid staff have reported freezing problems.

The PlayStation forums have been hit with complaints of varied system issues after the update. After reading hundreds of comments from these boards and others, we've noticed a few similarities in the complaints. The most common issue seems to be slowed XMB operation, and some are saying that the 60GB model is seeing the most problems. There are other complaints of read errors and systems freezing up, but there are just as many posts from other users who say that their system is running perfectly fine.

Here's something we've found: A new news ticker was added in the last update, and we've noticed that disabling that really seems to fix the slowed XMB operation. Of course, this is no help to those who claim that they're having disc read errors because of this, but I can't see how a firmware update would cause this anyway.

[To shut off the news ticker: Hit "triangle" when Information Board is selected in the XMB and choose "Disable."]

So, PS3-owning Destructiod readers, are you having issues after the update? Non-PS3 owning readers are free to flame at their leisure.

[Thanks, Nick]

Mine's working fine. As usual most of the "my system broke" topics on the formus are from people with just a few posts. There are a lot of trolls on those forums, not as bad as gamefaqs, but still pretty bad.

No problems here.

I've got a 20GB.

I've even installed a custom theme on there, played my Minna No Golf, and played a few BluRays. No problems.

Firmware controls the hardware, so it makes sense that if you updated the firmware you could get hardware related errors.

I've had no issues. I have an 80gb. When people say the xmb has slowed down, how do you mean? the load time? the scrolling?

I agree with you, EXTEND THE WARRANTY SONY!! (make it cover dust too)

I've experienced very slow menus. I thought it might be the theme so I used the default theme and I haven't seen the issue since. The news ticker is also a waste of time. They should have made the Information Board appear when you hover over the icon. That would have been far more useful and unobtrusive.

Problems or not, I wish I had a ps3. I am gonna get one after Christmas when I am done paying for my new MacBook. Too bad there isn't a ps3 laptop, I would have bought it instead.

Purchasing aside, it doesn't matter, sony will release a fix later.

I have a 60GB European PS3

I actually do have a problem but I'm not sure if it's related to the 2.00 firmware. I had 2.00 since it came out and I was having fun with my PS3 since then but then something weird happened. After watching 2 rented DVDs and then going to bed, when I woke up my PS3 wouldn't read any discs. So basicaly my problem is, that any disc I put in (PS3, PS2, BluRay, DVD) doesn't show up on the XMB. Instead, The little loading icon the top right corner of the screen stays there as if the PS3 is constantly trying to read the disc.

It's not because any of my discs are dirty that this happened trust me, I'm a freak with this stuff and I even checked the DVDs before putting them in. If this is a problem with 2.00 why would it only trigger a problem a few days later? What do you guys think? Dale?

Bah Sony has yet to get back to me (I contacted them about this the day before yesterday via email). Bad news is, I'm going to gut myself when I can't play Uncharted, good news is the DivX update sounds fucking sweet.

I downloaded 2.0 the first day and have had it freeze on me a couple of times. This has never happened since I've had it. It froze when loading and in the middle of game play. I have an American 60 gig PS3. Now I'm afraid to play any games on it.

Been playing the hell out of Call of Duty 4 online this past weekend, no problems with the 60gig here.

Where do you go to download new themes? I saw some on the PS Store but don't know of other places. Or better yet, how does one make them? Or a site with info on making them? I made a Heavenly Sword wall paper but would be interested in making icons and such (I'm assuming you can do that, no?)

I have a 60GB US PS3 and had the unit freeze on reboot after the update was applied. After that, only 1 more freeze during boot and all is smooth now. I've noticed the slow menus so I'll try the disabling of the ticker.

...end of line...

Thanks for the update on how to disable the ticker, never paid attention to it really so it'll be nice to just shut it off.

The planet isn't as renegade as you, man. If you don't like the smell of burning meat, or someone trying to sell you something, then get the fuck off the planet.

Anyway. As to you PS3ers who have had problems; hope things get fixed. Hardware can't always be perfect. I guess the thousands (maybe millions [glad I'm not one of them]) of 360 owners know how you're feeling.

I noticed the XMB slowdown (noticable when scrolling) and I turned of the info ticker, it helped. Other than that, I had no problems (there was a problem with Tversity, the network streaming software, prematurely ending avi files with the update, but it is now solved with the new tversity..)

I have a 60GB PS3, and I've noticed a lot of slowing down on the XMB menu, almost to the point of locking up. Turning off the news ticker seemed to fix this for me. Also, I haven't had any disc read errors, so I'm thinking that may be an issue no related to the update.

To decoyb: I read somewhere that there was a specific problem with COD4's online multiplayer and the PS3, and I think it may have been something related to what you mentioned. I believe they're working on a patch.

60g here, no problems, but maybe thats because I disableed the ticker as soon a s I saw it. It's fugly.

Also I hate the new PSN Icon - It just doesn't fit with the theme of the XMB. hopfully I can find a custom theme that gets rid of it.

I haven't noticed any XMD slowdowns, but I have had a freeze. I've been using my PS3 like mad for the last couple weeks (yes, I'm surprised, too), so one freeze isn't the end of the world. A 2.1 update within the next month would be nice, though.

If there's anything that deserves cursing, it's the installation. It's freakin' SLOW. XBox updates are almost lightning fast and are functional right after download. PS3 downloads, including games, have to be installed after download, and that's pretty stupid. Please, think up a new installation policy, Sony.

Oh yeah, and the Store sucks ass. It's impossible to navigate even with a mouse. Make a new Store UI before adding new wallpapers and other useless crap. NOW!!!

I have the US 60GB PS3 and I haven't had any issues with the update. I turned off the ticker almost immediately once it was installed though. No disc read errors or freezing.

I have had the system freeze about 4 or 5 times since I got it but I assume it is because I never turn the system off and go back and forth between games and Folding@Home all the time.

My story: I've owned the PS3 for 11 months now. I have never had a problem reading any disc, be it a rental movie, rental game, ps3 or ps2 game, dvd or blu ray movie, etc. But the very first disc I tried after the 2.00 update yielded a "This video cannot be played" with an error code. Coincidence? Granted it was a rental, but the disc looked flawless even under sunlight. It was Spider Man 3, one of the more advanced titles that even required an OS update to watch it in the first place I believe. Did they forget to add that patch to the 2.00 code or something? Other discs have played ok, so maybe it was a fluke, but I'm not feeling warm and fuzzy about this 2.00 update AT ALL.

Well, here’s the deal. There are a few known issues with the v2.00 update (I know this because I researched the issue myself at the PlayStation Knowledge Center on Sony’s website. Currently, the article lists three known problems that have been caused by the most recent software update, and I ran into the first one: plugging in an 80 GB iPod classic causes the PS3 to freeze (I have a 60 GB unit). Luckily, I haven’t experienced any of the other issues that you guys have mentioned, but then again, I don’t have a PSP and don’t have Remote Play enabled or anything like that.
