Now, I'm not criticizing the PS3 by any means. I don't own one (yet -- maybe), and I've actually really wanted to see Sony's Cell processor technology succeed, if not necessarily Blu-ray (it just reminds me of the whole Betamax fiasco).

Still, Sony has been dropping the ball like a retarded monkey with buttered hands for a while now. Tell us if you've experienced the same downgraded visuals with your backwards-compatible PS2 games on your PS3. If the claim in the video is right -- and I think the evidence is compelling -- that all it would take is a simple firmware upgrade to smooth over those edges, then we'll collectively let Sony know that we don't appreciate being bent over like just another monkey (NSFW).

[Thanks for the tip, Teddy

[Update: I actually met and spoke with a Sony PS3 hardware rep today and brought up this issue. This is the first he had heard of such a thing and said they were having no issues like this that he was aware of. He did mention that using an HDMI cable may have this effect. -- Robert Summa]

Seems like there are some color/contrast issues too, so what's going on? I mean it's not like it's running in emulation, either - they packed the whole PS2 hardware in there. seems like sheer laziness

ARGH! Please sdon't type "SONY" ever again. Even on Sony's own corporate page (http://www.sony.com/SCA/index.shtml?ref=http%3A//www.sony.com/index.php) they don't capitalize. It's just retarded, and I have no idea where it started, but it's got to stop.

It's the color/contrast issue that hit me as well. While it's jagged city in the MGS shots, in the FFX, that's what stands out.

This may be a problem with the way the PS3 is essentially designed, as I notice the same problem in PS3 games as well.

Uggh, that's pretty sad the the PS3 is so next-gen it forgot how to render last gen. There's really no excuse for the PS3 to not upconvert the games to HD IMO, let alone down-grade the visuals. I'm sure this could be fixed through a firmware update, but if Sony won't even acknowledge the issue, don't hold your breath.

damn that sucks for everyone with a SONY playstation 3. my NINTENDO gamecube games play nicely on my NINTENDO wii console. SONY really should step up and fix that, because those SONY playstation 2 images on the SONY playstation 3 look like shit.

From now on, I'm always going to type it as SONY. And that comparison looks rough.

LOL @JOE classic.. yeah that really sux but BC for every next gen system (exclude the Wii, graphics are the same on both consoles anyways) so I guess you just have to pick your poison. Also.. monkey sex is kinky. YOU PICK THAT MONKEYS BUTT!! Now thats what I call a three-some...

Don't base the color on anything. This was shot off of a TV, and he may have reset the white balance or something when shooting between the two consoles. I would not base it on anything at all, component or HDMI.

The important thing here is the jaggies and the lower quality looking textures, which are both undeniably obvious here.

Oh, and uh... SONY

Didn't Microsoft get approval to trademark M$ recently? I coulda sworn I saw that somewhere...

I'm waiting for the SONY fan boys to claim the BS3 version looks 9000 times better than the ps2 version and soon.

that is really fucking bad.

some one should do a Wii/GC comparison? just for the hell of it?

Wii/GC graphics = same fuckin thing. Doesnt make sense to compare graphics of a system that isnt trying to sell graphics.

in my experience GC games look better on the Wii - or at least exactly the same with a component cable. and N64 games look ridiculously good (no slowdown, upscaled, and brighter colors with fewer jaggies)

As someone who is perpetually behind the times, backwards compatibility is a big issue for me. I like playing old as well as new games. This does not bode well for Sony if they were hoping to get my hard earned dollhairs.

The HDMI cable will require a complete readjusting of the picture, so yeah disregard the color saturation difference.

That being said, JAGGIES. Holy shnikeys do PS2 games look like complete ass on the PS3. Would it really be as simple as a firmware patch to fix? I was wanting to get a PS3 eventually but not like this... not like this...

Hmmm.. I hate to say this guys, but even Kotaku says (and Kotaku is pretty much an anti sony site) these are TV issues not PS3 issues. Most Ps3 users arent complaining about this so called "issue" at all.

Also the video is a major joke, the dramatic music of the beginning seems fit for "loose change" or "The Pinochet Genocide Trial" not a goddamn video game image comparison! "Check image B is a crime against humanity!" I mean come on people!

Yeah... while the side-by-side is a good idea, I'd rather see two full screens next to each other rather than the overlay.

Anyway, until it gets fixed, it's just another tally on the board for the 360.

The colors in FFX are a huge part of the damn game, imo. I've said it before, and I'll say it again. There is no way I'm getting a SONY PS3. :P

@Azrael: The televisions aren't causing the rendering problems; It is, unfortunately, the PS3. SONY denounces these claims, but why would any sane person listen to them at this point? Also, the choice of music and presentation has nothing to do with the actual facts presented.

I won't even go into the bizarre comparison to Loose Change.
This isn't the fucking World Trade Center.
It's yet another reason not to buy a PS3.

Bah, spoiled yankess all of ye :)

The resolution you get on the PS3 backward function looks exactly like our freaking PAL games do on a regular PS2!

That's right, us Europeans get the games twice as expensive, 3 month later, and they look like shit.

Thank god for RGB and importing games.

well i dunno what this is worth to anyone, but since ive moved to an LCD hdtv, thats how my ffx, ffx-2 and ffxii all look on my PS2 with component cables. honestly id like to know how they got it to look so good on the ps2, because my ps2 looks like their ps2 most of the time (and in other games as well).

i chalked it up to the way my tv handles the upscale and interpolation since i never noticed that type of visual on my old crt with composite cables.

as much as i dont want to admit it, i think it may be a tv issue/cable/resolution issue, as opposed to a problem strictly with the way ps3 handles ps2/1 games.

I call bullcrap on this test. This seems just to be a promotion for the website mentioned at the tail of the video.

So they got a Ps3 and a ps2 to match side by side and frame by frame.

Bullcrap. It's possible but it takes a lot of time. If their site was devoted to video in anyway I might it seriously but it looks like the exact same image side by side with some image processing applied to make it look different.

The original link, pics only, no vid

says that it is only on very few and certin games. Unfortunatly FF titles are in the list. For me that makes me sad. Not as sad as not having a Wii or PS2... or even FFXII but sad in a I wish I could be having that problems kind of envious sad.

Actually its the TV not the PS3. on my 50" plasma the detail is so good that unless the quality is top notch you can see the defects. I watch DVDs that most of the time have breakup in the compression thats highly visible. I dont get that with BluRay cause its a high quality image.

I had a PS2 and it looked like crap right alongside the GC on the same TV. If you have a standard CRT television or set that simply isnt all that great compared to todays tech. Then everything looks just fine.

You cant feed shit graphics onto a display that natively displays 2 to 3 times the resolution. Its not Sonys fault its just the way it is. The Wii also looks just as shitty. Sorry though. The Wii has some fun points but graphically they coulda atleast moved up to 5 yrs ago Graphics. Far Cry looks like first gen Doom for fuck sakes.

Sony has come out with a fine product. Theres a shitload of PS2 games so give em a break. They've shown that firmware upgrades are going to be plenty and they will get it underway just fine.

Being able to upscale to HD with some serious anti aliasing would certainly help though. Agreed on that point.

But ya. Its your tv sets people. Its what sucks about having todays generation toys. Anything less than HD is pretty gay all around.
