PS2 is still knocking out suckers left and right: Where's the next-gen at? photo

Maybe this shouldn't be such a big surprise, considering that just about every household seems to have a PlayStation 2 lurking in their entertainment center. The fact that you can still find a lot of outstanding games to play on it (for next to nothing) surely makes the console attractive to the average consumer. But to all, it still serves as a sobering reminder that having the latest and greatest console on the market doesn't matter to everyone. According to these damning numbers from Nielson's GamePlay Metrics service, it seems that it doesn't matter to most people.

With the recent launch of the service, its first batch of data for us to comb through makes this point becomes painfully clear. For the month of June, the PS2 accounted for a whopping 42.3% of total console usage. Did you catch that? We're not talking about the PS3, Xbox 360, or the Wii -- a console dating back to the year 2000 is what still seems to be the hot item. And here we thought the Wii was the one to watch out for. I'd show you the dreary percentages of the "big three," but it would be a waste of time. Yes, they are that bad.

Just when we started to believe that the next-gen consoles were hitting their stride, along comes Nielson to slap us back to reality. Does this serve to further the argument that videogames are outpricing what most people are willing to pay for them, or is it "still too early" to call?

Well, I'm not suprised that the greatest console ever made continue to wipe the floor with everything else, although being a bit old. Think of the PS2 as that fiesty grandma that won't go down without a fight.

Doesn't surprise me, it's cheap and there's a ton of games out for it. I know a few people who still had a PSX hooked up until last year. For the type of gamer who doesn't care about the latest and greatest, the PS2 is a great buy.

Hmm that's a good point Magesx.

PS2 is probably the greatest console ever made to date.

I've had my ps2 for a year or two now, but it hasn't been til recently that I actually started buying games for it. I have a wii, but I've pretty much beaten those games to hell, so my ps2 collection is finally catching up to my xbox and gc collection.

It's cheap. The good games are cheap, and that spells win.

Thanks a lot for reminding us that while next gen consoles might be much more cool to advertise for game developers and gaming publications, the market is still deeply into the tried and true previous generation.

I am a part of this market who isn't interested yet in buying an entertainmnt console who looks more like an item of luxury.

Damn right. Every time I walk into the local EB Games lately, looking for a DS or 360 game, I always end up coming out with a PS2 game. Odin Sphere FTW

The Next-Gen consoles would be taking off if they didn't make such damn good games on the PS2

The whole PS3/360 movement is way out of kilter with what's actually happening in digital entertainment. This is not the fucking 50's, technology is not supposed to be an expensive novelty, this is the age of mass production and shrinking hardware sizes, technology is meant to be cheap and affordable to all.

It's just very strange that within three conoles, Sony have forgotten what made the Playstation brand so succesful in the first place. This is what happens when you become too specialist by trying to please a "type" of consumer rather than try to attract all potential customers.

I absolutely suck at this game, but I love playing it. Unfortunately, I'm still only in the 2nd act here.
And it doesn't help that NIS and Atlus keep coming out with games that detract from Odin Sphere Time.

This is true, but the Wii is trying to attract everyone, and it's still getting pitiful numbers right now, at least compared to PS2.

zardoz - what makes you think they forgot about the PS2? they clearly haven't abandoned it. though it doesn't get the publicity it used to, the machine is still well supported with games AND upgrades to its core system. they keep shrinking it smaller and smaller and probably will till its roughly just barely bigger than the disc that the thing is playing.

what i think shoulda occured was keep the same ps2 design and just replaced the parts inside gradually and then switch the color and finally the disc reader and then relabel it PS3 on the side. make it a painless transition.

oh well.

uptonogood- I think what Zardoz is saying is that if Sony knew what it they were doing, the PS3 would have been a hell of a lot cheaper and would have had a hell of a lot more 1st party "mainstream" games for it by now.

Anyway, I the fact that the PS2 is still beating every home console but the Wii in sales should tell us one thing. Almost no one cares about those "Next Gen" graphics enough to shell out extra money for them.

I don't blame Sony for not predicting this occurance. It is a first.

Graphicly improvements have always mattered. The jump from 8bit to 16bit was huge, changing graphics from simple blocks to painterly illustrations. With, 16bit to 32bit you had the introduction of polygonal graphics that could actually depict recognizably human forms. 32bit to what ever the hell the PS2/GC/Xbox does for "bits" made those forms look nearly as good as 2D or 3D animated features. (Wind Waker, Kingdom Hearts, etc).

And now this 360/PS3 "Next Gen", where the only real improvements are HD, frame rates, shinier human skin with more noticable pours, more wrinkles on aliens/dragons/wahtever, and the ability to get real close to something and not see pixles.

People expect more for the cost of upgrading to these systems. The human characters in 360/PS3 games still aren't photo realistic. They still look like manakins, only more detailed.

Who cares about how detailed you manakins are?

In closing, the Japanese Hardware sales for this weak.-

- DS Lite: 154,459
- Wii: 86,786
- PSP: 32,894
- PS2: 14,059
- PS3: 12,187
- Xbox 360: 2,664

I bought Shin Megami Tensei Nocturne and Megaman X Collection for my PS2 today, I still have all the .hack games to slog through and Persona 3 comes out on the 14th.

The PS2 has plenty still left for it :D

I think that Sony views a lot of gamers who just own a PS2 as eventual PS3 owners. The PS3 is selling to the hardcore fans right now, but as the game catalogue improves, more PS2 owners will make the jump to PS3.

i guess im one of the few thats getting annoyed by the ps2's lingering. don't get me wrong i love my ps2, but it's presence is really screwing with current gen consoles namely the wii. ps2 is one of the main reasons wii games have bad graphics. devs figure it best to port ps2 games to make extra money, but that just saturates the wii's library with bad ports. now if they ported something okami or devil may cry i wouldnt mind the ps2 sticking around.

XeroxMe are you saying that the Wii has the same graphics as the PS2? or does one prove better?

Honestly after I saw FF12 & GoW, I was really blown away at the graphics. Now, what makes the Wii so great is the 1st party games and Miyamoto being the main brain for Nintendo's success, if that man dies, Nintendo will die off. To my eyes thats the only thing Nintendo has over the competition is that man.

Whats stopping Sony (biggest maker of electronics) to just replicate what nintendo does and do it better? that my friend is Shigeru Miyamoto :)

Ah yes, PS2, truely the greatest console to date; i still have the one i got back in 2000. Currently playing Odin Sphere(about half way through), with Persona 3 on my to get list. And there's a whole list of old games that i have yet to play but want to play, and even a few i want to replay since it's been so long since i played them. Really it should probably keep me happy for atleast another year or two before feeling the need to go next-gen... so ya, the current status of the next-gen consoles means little to me, it only matters where they will be a few years from now... expanded library of games? price cuts? consoles dying(PS3?)? annoucement of next-next-gen system (xbox1080?)... it's about where they'll be eventually

@XeroxMe
While the wii is stronger, it's not stronger by much. Really, the graphics wouldn't get that much better, the difference between the maximum of the PS2 and the max for the wii is pretty minimal, i doubt anyone would really notice the difference (unlike the difference between all last gen consoles and PS3/360), so they might as well make more profit by releasing on both PS2 and Wii... It's only by holding back on graphics and certain tech such as HiDef, is wii able to be sold at such a low and affordable price campared to the other next-gen consoles.

actually the wii while not a huge leap does have plenty more power than the ps2. the wii has more ram and better cpu&gpu. my post simply stated that because of the power difference between the wii and ps3/360 it gets ps2 port since the other two are in a different league. im not saying we'll suddenly be seeing magical graphical leaps, but the wii's hardware isn't really being optimized yet. when the ps2 fazes out i can guarantee we'll see wii games take a step up in graphics not big, but definitely an improvement. just look at galaxy, brawl, metroid, zack and wiki, and no more heroes. they're not "next-gen" but they're above what's out now.

While I believe the figures, I should remind you Nielson's is somewhat of a sham god for advertisers to pray to with far less of a connection to reality as many give them credit for.

This post seems woefully inept. I'd say same case back when the ps2 came out, I know most my friends were rockin' the ps1. But more to the point the difference between generations is getting smaller and so the importance in upgrading isnt as great.

This is not surprising considering that more than 100 million own a PS2, and just over 20 million next/current gen consoles combined are in the peoples hands.

nielson ratings are a bunch of bull (it's only people that have the box), but i've been playing the hell out of my ps2 lately. game prices are great and the selection is massive. graphics still look sweet (ffxii and okami?), and i'm now discovering missed gems, like digital devil saga. i stopped buying ps2 games until the 'nextgen' systems came out. and my wii has had one game of interest, zelda, and i beat that 7 months ago.

While I seriously disagree that PS2 is the best console ever made, I understand why people still play it - huge game library, cheap hardware, cheap games, GREAT games.
