PS2 gets price cut, loses power brick photo

Just as predicted, Sony's PlayStation 2 gets a price cut, though it looks like it will hit shelves a little late for this holiday season.

The new model gets a $30 price cut, down to the expected price point of $99. MCV says that the new PS2s are expected to hit stores in early 2008.

The external power pack that the Slim PS2 used to sport is now going to be tucked within the system's casing, helping to bring the price down.

With a 120 million PlayStation 2s already in homes, I don't know how much more they can sell, but this is a good move towards Sony's decade system life goal.

If it comes in loads of different colors I'm buying another one.

$100 PlayStation 2? No bulky power brick? If I don't get a PlayStation 3 for any number of reasons, now is a good a time as any to buy a PS2.

I predict that this model will beat the PS3 in sales this holiday.

I've actually been considering buying a new PS2 some time, because old PS2s disc reader is old. That is to say, it don't wanna read shit. Like CD roms. Does anyone know if the new models have an improved disc drive that wont give you a hell of a time with those CD roms?

It's too bad that this is missing the holiday season.

@Danro

Shouldn't this been done years ago?

My launch-era (Dec. 2000) PS2 is still going strong — I’ve given up trying to beat “Free Bird” on Expert in Guitar Hero II because I now have GH III — but I’ll eventually go back, and when I do, I know that my seven-year-old PS2 will be up to the task.

And as to this now-below-$100 system...no self-respecting gamer could pass this up.

Except, of course, for those self-respecting gamers who have had PS2s for years now. I think we can cut them some slack.

However, this is a great deal for families who may be looking to slowly get their kids into gaming. No other system offers such a quality backlog of titles across every genre.

Good stuff.

I bought my old PS2 used for about 100. Now I can get a new one that's slim and has an internal power brick for 100? SOLD.

An internal power brick, is that it? Come on Sony give us wireless PS2 controllers or something.
I'm not a technical guy but isn't it better to have power bricks be external rather than internal?

I used to own the cinder-block of a PS2, when they first came out, It was a great system back then, but the lens crapped out and I never had enough money to buy a new one. I hope to scratch up enough for this one. I've missed out on a lot of great games for PS2, so I hope to make up for lost ground.

I think I'll finally get one. There are easily $400 worth of games I want for the PS2, I'm not sure why I don't own one already but now seems like the perfect time. Now = January.

just proves that the old PS2 still has life in it...after all nintendo only just cut support for the NES after so long...

Wow. I actually never owned a playstation. I should buy it. and play teh video games on it. PS2 games should be cheaper, and it seems the majority of the Bargain Bin Laden games are for the PS2 (PSdouble?)

I don't think this would be enough to make me rebuy my PS2.
