PS2 games coming to the PlayStation Store? photo

God, I hope so. Sure, there's plenty of PSOne hits we've yet to see, but I've really been hoping for some PS2 downloads. You all know good and well that the system could pull it off. It was just a matter of waiting until Sony had it ready. So when?

While not official, the above picture gives me hope. This little gem comes from the N4G boards, where a board member claims this shot came from a Sony London employee. He says that a new PlayStation 2 Store will be announced at E3, and its launch is marked for late summer. And it's supposed to launch in Europe!

Of course, none of this is confirmed. But the screenshot looks real enough. If you squint (or use the larger one in the gallery below), you can see Metal Gear Solid 2, Fantavision, The Bouncer, Ridge Racer V, Smuggler's Run, Red Faction, and SSX. The highlighted selection, MGS2, lists for £12.99.

This line up, while pretty nice, reminds me of the current PSOne lineup: all early games. I'm not complaining, though.

Do you think this is legit? What other games would you like to see on PSN? What do you think about the pricing? Do you think these new selections are related to the recently cut backwards compatibility in the PS3?

[Thanks, Zulu]

I've always preferred having a solid copy of the game, much less chance of something happening and losing it forever. Not too interested, but if they did PS2 game rentals like Microsoft does movie rentals on the 360...

If this is true, could this mean it is possible for even the 40 gig models to play PS2 discs via emulation?

It'd piss me off if I had a 40gig ps3 that can't play the ps2 titles I own so that they could charge $13 for the old titles to run on emulation.

also quick bit of fun...its nice to point out that they would be cheaper than the Xbox Originals.

@ manasteel88 Or you could just use your PS2 to play your PS2 games. Just a thought.

I'd rather have disc emulation (40GB owner). Like most people, I like owning a physical copy of a game. I don't know, it just feels like I don't really own the game if it is a digital copy. Either way, this would be awesome and I'd probably buy a few titles myself.

I don't know man, some games are rare to find and expensive to boot. Ico is a prime example.

certain downloadable PS2 games with online components will also work over the PSN? or is that too awesome of an idea?

I'm all for it if there is some hard to find software. I'd totally download something like ICO if they put it up.

I'd still rather pay for a physical copy, even if it costs more money.

If it's true, I hope they have some obscure games for download. (mainly RPGS).

Well, if paying for PS2 downloads keeps PSN free... I'm in. Seems a shame to have to trade off backwards compatibility for it though. Oh well.

Erm, I actually thought, that this was a given at some point in time. Not sure that screen is legit, but I guess E3 would be right time to announce something like that.

That's exactly what Microsoft seems to be doing to anyone who bought the Arcade bundle.

Since I never owned a PS2, this is nice. But I would kinda like to own a physical copy of the game.
Also, what about storage space?

It may mean installing a new hard drive. At least you can get a laptop HD and come out fairly cheap.

This would be awesome, but I hope they do have the emulator for the 40gb soon as well.

I'd download a lot of games I didn't have a chance to play earlier. god of war, ico, and katamary damacy (where is my goddamn katamary damacy for ps3?) just to begin with.
As for being completely digital, it's way better. I cant loose a password in my head, but I can easily misplace a couple of cds. or maybe a volcano could erupt near my house. If I survived, I could still play the games in another ps3.
Or a flood. or a robbery, or.. leprechauns... you get the idea. The only way to lose digital copies is if sony somehow stops existing, if we are all out of ps3's in the world and the next generation stops accepting early downloads, or if we are dead. Unless I go to gaming heaven, where all games are always available, and I discover that I have super l33t skillz. In all of them. Even barbie adventures.

whats this about an emulator?

i dont quite understand. its not an actual system built in like the 60 gig but it can play ps2 games.

anyways, being a 40g owner i like the idea of being able to download the rest of the mgs series. But, i would rather have a physical copy. so this emulator thing looks a whole lot better to me

Where is heretic... I thought for sure I would see his veins popping out and screaming like hitler at everyone talking about a ps3.

Anyhow... this would really piss me off if this was some how NOT for the 40gig owners.

I want Disgaea 2 to be on there before 3 drops. Hell, Sony should just do what Capcom does and see what's being gouged on ebay to decide what to put on there.
I'd spend $15 for a digital version (that's about what 12 quid is, right? I'm bad with the metric system)

I'm all for this... I'd like having this available - even though I prefer to have the discs.

But they need to get their priorities straight:

If the games can run from the hard drive (via download), then why the hell can't they address the issue on reading from the disc!?

I'd much rather they work on making PS2 games run on all PS3s than this. As it stands now, MGS3 on my 80GB PS3s is unplayable in certain areas because it's literally suffering from 50% slowdown (Groznyj Grad is painful to run through). That's not even mentioning the fact that 40GB models are completely shafted.
It's especially terrible because BC wasn't even cut to save money --- (like near-decade old PS2 hardware is expensive, lol!)

I like having the physical disks, but i'd probably buy digital copies of games i already own just for the convenience of not having to swap things out.

It's nice to be able to keep something in the drive and be able to play other things off the hdd.

I'd like to be able to rip games from original disks and put them on the hdd so I wouldn't need to get up and put the disk in (I'm lazy). Also on the "fuck you Sony for not having done this by now" list is downloading PSP games to the hdd. Being able to play Megaman Powered Up on my 20" tv would be nice.

I've read that this is a big reason why they phased out the hardware BC: Sony would prefer selling virtual copies than have a used game market in which they receive no profit. Makes sense, but still irritating.
