PS2 game, God of War 2, to run in 720p on the PS3? (update) photo

That sure is a lot of numbers in that headline and it also rhymes!

The God of War 2 embargo has been lifted, and IGN has posted their full review. Without giving too much away, they thought it was just peachy (as did 1up), but that was expected. What's interesting is that apparently PlayStation 3 users finally have something (more) to smile about -- when running on a PlayStation 3, the game will display in a true HD resolution of 720p.

The last two things that we want to talk about unfortunately can't be tested yet as we won't have the boxed copy of the game for a few weeks (though what we've reviewed is the final code), though neither would alter the score in any fashion anyway and we want to point them out. The first is that God of War II will not only be playable on the PlayStation 3, of course, but that it will run at a true HD resolution of 720p. We're unsure as of yet whether or not we'll see additional texture detail because of this, but we'll update this section of the review when we can test it.

This is great news for any PlayStation 3 owner, since all of them own high definition televisions. While specifics on how this will work aren't clear, NeoGAF user Panajev2001a breaks it down all technical like, using big words and numbers that are too complicated for my puny human brain to handle this early in the morning. So if that's your thing, go check it out.

Everyone else can rest easy just knowing that God of War 2 is going to look super sweet no matter where or how you play it.

[Update: Turns out IGN was wrong about 720p. They issued this update: Editor's Correction: After posting the review, we've gotten word from an SCEA representative that the game will support 480p on the PlayStation 3 but not 720p. Our error was due to crossed information and we're sorry for the confusion. We will report back once we have the final copy in our hands.]

I never played the original, so how important is the rumble feature in a game like this?

I wouldn't say the rumble plays a huge role in the game, but I'm pretty sure I would notice that it was missing. In a game like God of War, it's not necessary, but once it's taken away, I think it's something that would be obvious immediately.

From what I understand, Cory Barlog had mentioned he wanted the game to detect you were playing it on a PS3 and implement tilt functionality into the game. Time constraints didn't allow that to happen, but just knowing that's something that can happen is pretty slick.

no thanks... though i can't wait for this game,
i'll just use my PS2 like everyone else.
i'll buy something else with my income tax money

this sounds like Sony coming up with more BS to
sell those PS3's taking up shelf space .....

a next gen system is trying to be
sold using a game from its predecessor is lame.

where are all the TRUE HD games?

Maybe I don't have a firm understanding of HD gaming, but if you make a game made for the PS2 and scale it to 720p won't it be a pixelated mess? Wouldn't it sharpen the image thus making the pixels crisper, which would result in more jagged edges?

Sounds like your coming up with more BS to attack Sony.

Kinda like a certain Zelda game released back in November...

Personally, I hate rumble. I don't think it helps the realistic feel at all. It makes me feel like I'm using a pager for a controller. I always turn it off. Always.

wait? since when was 720p "true" HD? I thought that 1080p was the only true HD? I understand you mean it won't be upscaling or whatnot, but I'm just noticing how the PR will change it's tune for whatever the situation.

I think they say "true HD" cause it isn't shown in 480p but ACTUALLY HD.

720p = true HD from IGN, not Sony.

That would be awesome. I don't how how this is possible since it is rendered on the PS2 HARDWARE built into the ps2 but if it can be rendered at 720p.
This even the ps2 graphics look as good as any ps3 or xbox360 games out there.

Sweet I heard is was going to have progressive scan.........this is better.

Apparently there is a whole huge debate over 720p vs 1080p as it was being made and if it ACTUALLY makes a difference, unless your TV is around 50" or bigger going from 720p to 1080p is IMPOSSIBLE to tell the difference.

So boo hoo to you.

There are situation where you can't tell the difference... but 1080p is a higher resolution than 720p. like it or not 720p is not "true" HD, no matter what the PR speak says

Sad day, I click the IGN review. They corrected themselves. 420p, not 720p.

You are right Tim...than that means I heard correctly as noted in my post above as supporting progressive scan. That sucks as I was all giddy and shit for 720p, but on the OTHER hand, I was right. Kinda sweet and sour style

Hey Brutal, just letting you know...not all PS3 owners have HDTVs. Right now, I’m playing mine on my 8-and-a-half-year-old 13" CRT, although once I get my tax refund, I’ll be able to pick up a small (23"-27") HDTV for my dorm room. For now, though, Resistance looks just fine to me. Still, I’m disappointed to hear about the correction — I was looking forward to playing God of War II in HD.

Oh man Bronx, playing Resistance on a 13" crt is like taking Filet Mignon and using it to make a cheeseburger, with cheese whiz.
Anyway, the first God of War looked specacular in 480p. I can't stress how huge of a difference even that slight resolution difference made. 720p would have been godly, too bad it's not the case. If you've got an HDTV and a PS2, it's worth the literal one dollar to get some component cables off of ebay.

Wait a minute, exactly how did IGN confused 480p (normal resolution) with 720p? (HD) it does smell like a buy off. but what gives? sony themselves refuted the info.
