PS2 classic GrimGrimoire is available on PSN now! photo

The PlayStation 2 classic strategy RPG GrimGrimoire is now available in the...PlayStation 2 Classic section of the PlayStation Network -- where else?

Now this is speaking my language. We're talkin' a delicious 2D strategy RPG for PS2 that was made by both Nippon Ichi Software and Vanillaware. It's everything I require in a game. They could have named this game "Dale North."

Back in 2007 this game cost about $50. Now you're getting it for $9.99 as a download. How times have changed.

We've got new screenshots in our gallery below.

How happy are you to see PS2 classics coming to the PS3?

I don't think I have this already. If I do, however, I'll just use the disc version. I have 2 PS2's and a BC 60 GB PS3 (as well as a non-BC 160 gb pre-Slim PS3)....

Bought this along with God Hand, though I didn't get to play it much aside from the tutorial. Looks absolutely beautiful so far though.

Might pick it up eventually. I tried it when it came out and it just didn't synch with me. Plus I think I did one of those extra missions WAY too early and it left a sour taste in my mouth.

I think this could be more of a Vita initiative but am not complaining. Hopefully more great games come soon!

Now enable PS2 backwards compatibility for all PS3's Sony, no excuse. Coming from an owner of the OG 60GB model.

I'm happy that games I don't own work on a PS3, but I'm pissed that I can't play MY PS2 games on my PS3.

Well, all those people who predicted a few years ago that Sony ripped BC out of the PS3 just to sell PS2 games on PSN later should be feeling good about themselves.

No offense, but why is this a story when we had an announcement about the PS2 classics the other day? Plus you single GrimGrimoire out when it's all about God Hand and Odin Sphere. I'll probably be buying those two sometime soon.

I'll just leave this here: Ring of Red, when it comes out, might not be worth it.

@Nic128 - its under "Only on PSN"

Also, I'm rather surprised no one's called Sony on this, but there was absolutely no effort on their part to give you the option within the emulation to resize the image so it doesn't look so blurry.

And it all looks blurry.

Its true that I could hook up some component cables for the PS3, but I really shouldn't have to just for this.

@STRYKIE: It doesn't really matter as much how long it took, the fact is, they proved those who thought it would happen (like me) right.

Plus, it is about only the halfway point of the PS3's life cycle, if their 10 year generation is to believed (which I do believe, considering how long the PS2 has been selling).

I'm pretty happy, I tell you. Although from this handfull selection I have all I wanted on disc. Everyone else shouldn't miss, though.

@Lowlander - Ring of Red is up now. It wasn't worth it back when it came out.

The games available are GrimGrimorie, God Hand, Odin Sphere, Maximo: Ghosts to Glory and Ring of Red.

I got Odin Sphere and God Hand. The games themselves seem fine, but I'd almost swear they were intended for Vita instead, because again, the games come off pretty damn blurry on an HD set and the default resolution here is 720p on PS2 classics, which probably isn't helping.

Thanks for sharing, that is actually an issue for me.

Have you tried to zoom the image in with the TV? Most of the times that helps.

I've been wanting this game for a while and have on multiple occasions considered hunting it down on eBay. Seeing it on the PSN now is pretty much the greatest thing ever.

@Sayword - I went into the emulation's video options and set to "standard" and then re-zoomed to standard on my HD set to match.

Still blurry. Maybe just slightly less, but only slightly.

Just for reference, I use an Insignia HDTV that can scale to 1080p. I'm not an HD whore by any means, but this is seriously the first time I've had a problem with the difference in graphics/resolution. And I think Muramasa is gorgeous in 480p, so its kinda painful to see Odin Sphere forced beyond what its capable of.

I'm sure it would look fine at 480p, its just sort of a pain in the arse to get another set of components and switch them out constantly with my Wii.

Did they fix the issues with slowdown that the game (and Odin Sphere) experienced when lots of sprites were on screen? I swear my ps2 felt like a computer playing RAGE! HEY-OOOOO!

I don't know if ill buy this. I tried to get into odin sphere twice..the 2nd time playing 14 hrs or so. I got to an area where the with a steep jump in difficulty and got tired of the grinding, which is pretty much necessary. It is a gorgeous game though

I still have my PS2 so It's not a big deal to me,BUT if these work with the Vita then I'll be very happy.
I'd love to play Odin Sphere on a handheld.

BRING ME GITAROO-MAN!!!

Anyway, I don't know how possible this even is, but if they somehow make PS2 download games playable on the Vita, then I will give them any amount of money they desire for it.

I didn't get a chance to buy these games on the PS2 and getting a physical copy now is irritating so I am pretty happy that they are bringing PS2 games out for digital download.

I bought Ring of Red and looks great in 480i, even though its an early CD-ROM PS2 game. Its not HD, but looks damn better than trying to get HD out of PS2 games. I'll be getting God Hand next week. Can't wait to see how Odin Sphere works on faster hardware.

Because NIS released screenshots to Dtoid and Dale picked them up and made an article about it. Nothing more than that. The gallery is actually the story. Dale just made it something more interesting.

I was really excited for this, but now I'm thinking it's just best if I go buy a physical copy, unless these run on Vita the PS2 classics are going to worthless to me. I already play my PS2 regularly so I have no problems playing it on that, however resetting my PS3 to SD and than moving it to my SDTV is an annoyance, and I've already done it far too many times than I'd like.

To stay true to the theme of Grim Grimoire, maybe they should keep removing then re-releasing the game on PSN every day?

It already feels kind of like that since I purchased Odin Sphere, Grim Grimoire and God Hand on the PS2 and now I have the opportunity to re-purchase them all again(except for Odin Sphere since I downloaded that the instant that it became available on the PSN. Valkyries,Velvet and Pookas take priority over all else now as it did back then).

I still can't decide on which 2-D game with a time travel theme available on the PSN right now that I want to download first/at all, Grim Grimoire or Chrono Trigger(which I still have in PS1 disc form), so I can go over the decision again over and over every day trying to successfully break the cycle but ultimate fail to do so...just like in Grim Grimoire!

I hope they upres other PS2 titles with polygonal graphics. I know it's a lot of work with sprite based games as Grim Grimore but they also don't look as crappy as 640x480 resed polygonal games.

My memories of grimgrimoire goes something like: gather mana, get 2 dragon eggs, hatch dragons, stomp over everything!! That pretty much carried me throughout the whole game once the unit was unlocked.
