While the PlayStation Vita will support PSP games, it does not have a UMD drive. For this reason Sony came up with their UMD Passport program. Through this, you'll be able to register UMD games to get a discounted digital copy for your Vita on the PlayStation Network.
The list of UMD Passport games has gone live on the PlayStation Japan webpage. There's 262 games on the list as of now, which means a good bit of the PSP library is missing. While this list is in no way final, it's scary to see many publishers missing from the offerings. Note that none of Capcom, Konami, or Square Enix's titles are listed at all.
Before setting Sony HQ on fire remember that this list probably isn't final, and that it will likely grow. Also remember that the UMD Passport has not been announced for territories outside Japan.
I have a f*ckton of PSP UMDs. While I think that paying for a game twice is silly, at least there's some kind of program for me to get some use out of all of these games on the Vita. Let's hope that the full UMD library will be made available for the program, and that it comes to our shores.

Destructoid is an open discussion community. You don't need to "audition" to post a comment - just speak your mind. We respect differing opinions on the site, so have at it. Be smart, funny, insightful, clueless, or cute -- but back it up with substance. Keep your cool, keep it fun. We only ask that you act respectfully and above all: don't be a troll and ruin it for everyone else. Don't bring down gamers or we'll, you know, gently shoot you in the face and stuff you into a flaming mailbox. Each comment is your opportuntity to make this community awesomer. Is that even a word?
Avoiding the banhammer only requires common sense: spamming, trolling, racism, NSFW stuff, and other forms of sucking will not be tolerated. If anyone is griefing please report abuse. Be good. Don't suck!
Difference you seem to neglect is you can play every single DS game ever made on your 3DS, regardless of picture quality. (Well, save for Guitar Hero...) Some are even improved by the Circle Pad's presence.
Even so, I agree in keeping the PSP (and the DS if you have one); you are guaranteed to be able to use all your UMDs instead of wondering whether they'll mess up the downloads or charge you a ridiculous amount even with a passport or anything similar.
It failed specifically due to the lack of umd and vita repeats that mistake
WTF you better fix your thing Konami.
Until then, bad backwards compatibility really left me underwhelmed with vita
UMD was a mistake. I am so glad I don't have to go back to that shitty technology. I haven't looked back the day I got my PSPGO. So much better than having to lug around and swap out the discs when I wanted to play a different game. Now I can just look through my list and play whatever I want, whenever I want.
UMD support should have remained, as the back touch panel was never needed.
The only issue with the PSP GO wa the fact that it wasn't the start of it's generation.
Just as if a digital only DS had released.
The sort of advances it was trying to push are things that need to exist at the start of the generation.
Not be a addition near the end of the cycle.
*looks at umds*
Fuck.
I suppose so. But no matter what solution they took, they would piss of someone. Had they used sticks in the first place, we wouldn't have this problem with the Vita.
UMD is not an option for Vita. It would be in the way of the touch pad on back.
I feel bad for the people who want to upgrade fully to a Vita as they'll leave behind their UMD collection. When I got my GO, I traded in all of my UMDs and PSP to Gamestop cause I didn't want them anymore.
And there is no possible way that they could have done this for free. Publishers would get mad. I already figured out how to exploit the system even with them charging for it. Simply buy a used copy from Gamestop, do whatever transfer thing needs to be done, and voila, you just got a brand new copy of that game for probably a fraction of what it would be on the PSN. Think of how much that would have been abused if this program was free.
People get all bent outta shape about backwards comp and not being able to play their old, lame psp games... get over it.
I'm going to download the ones that can be converted, sell the UMD's back, and probably pick up another 15 more.
Hopefully it takes a while before the shop owner catches on to what I'm doing ;)
I'm still going to keep my UMDs though. They never sucked to begin with, and it's still better than paying for a digital version.
"@Tristix, Its still Sony's idea to charge for games we have already paid for, the concept is utter crap, Activision tried it with the Guitar Hero games and it worked... oh shit."
Been through this a few times but I'll do it again since it's a new day and a new thread.
No, it's NOT still Sony's idea. At all. They don't own these games. They simply manufacture the console they're played on. This is not Sony's intellectual property we're talking about here. Sony does NOT have the right to give away games made by Square Enix (for example). No matter how much Sony may or may not WANT to give you free digital copies of games you own on UMD, they're simply not allowed to do so BY LAW.
I wish I didn't have to rehash this debate because there's really not a lot left to say about it that hasn't been said, but I do feel it necessary to point out that people are asking the impossible here.
Seriously, why not just keep the PSP? It's not like they're worth any trade-in credit, anyway.
Hey, they *might* have done it for free if they could confiscate your UMD or render it unusable, thus revoking your original license and replacing it with a digital one. But of course people would then bitch and moan about having to disown something which they already paid for.
Also, did you moan 11 years ago about how you weren't able to put your VHS-tape in your brand-new DVD-player?
"Also, did you moan 11 years ago about how you weren't able to put your VHS-tape in your brand-new DVD-player?"
did people NOT moan? i guess i didnt know anyone at the time who was eagerly anticipating replacing their entire vhs collection with a dvd one, did you?
also, for people who have cds, its called burning them to your hard drive. surprisingly, apple doesnt OWN music and you dont have to go to any apple store to do this, and its largely free to do so. hilarious argument tho.
If you prove you already have the game why do you need to pay anything?
Because... you know what. Fuck it. If you can't read, that's not my problem anymore. The answers have been clearly spelled out in the comments.
It's been affordable for a long time now if you didn't want it then then just forget about it's games as well.
How did MP3s replace CDs? You can convert your CDs into MP3s so that makes no sense.
