Proprietary memory cards on a freaking PORTABLE system, in this day and age, seem like a terrible dirty anachronism. Keep on suckin' Sony.
Yeah right. Thanks, I'll just wait one or two years before buying it, at which point there will likely be a new model with a fucking free memory card, after Sony realizes that selling a glorified 32gb SD card for $120 dollars is insane.
Considering a new MicroSDHC 32GB Class 4 card costs 37 bucks, Pass. Until someone makes an adapter that turns MicroSDHC into this new garbage sony format, I'm out.
Why are these so expensive? SD cards of the same size can be had for more than half the price. This is really offputting, and unless this thing has the best launch ever I will be passing until a good bundle comes along.
And here I thought it was bad enough with Microsoft charging an arm and a leg for not only their hard drives, but their USB flash drives, as well as the PSP's own memory cards. I've had to cling onto 2GB with my PSP because I can't afford to whip out close to $50 for a bigger memory stick.
Hopefully, some 3rd parties will make an SD Micro adapter, because these prices are bonkers. I guess it's how they will make their money since they are selling it at a loss, but still. $120 for 32GB? That's almost half the price of the system!

The 4 gig one isn't TOO bad, unless they're going to make us install games. Still not buying one. I'm betting the most popular games will probably make their way to consoles in a few years anyway.
Ugh, proprietary shit is always the worst. Definitely gonna hold off on picking up a Vita until those ridiculous prices go down a little. Thankfully nothing at launch comes off as a "must-buy" title.
You can get a 32GB SD card for under $40. But hey, I'm sure there's something special about these Vita cards. Like the Sony logo on them.
Kinda sucks but I think we were expecting worse. I saw higher numbers suggested when we saw the Japanese prices. So yeah, get a 4gb one and wait for knock offs.
Save files aren't large by any means.
These memory cards aren't meant for you to be able to save your games. They're meant for storing installed PSN games, as well as music and other kinds of media.
I'm not defending proprietary storage, that's just fucking stupid. But I don't think these cards (the larger ones, at any rate) are necessarily required to properly enjoy the Vita.

I'm not surprised Sony did this, because Sony has always had an unhealthy fixation with proprietary formats. This is little more than trying to recoup the loss they are going to eat on each Vita. I'll get one some day, by this has tempered by enthusiasm to the point where I am pretty comfy waiting for the first price cut.

Dear god, I was hoping they might be reasonably priced but obviously not. Seeing as I wouldn't want anything other than the largest card they offer, I guess I'll be waiting on the Vita for awhile.
Psp mem sticks were over priced at launch. You couldn't even buy an 8gig retail and they were 120 online. Also the psp go mem stick were also over priced. This should come as no surprise to anyone. It's the vita and I'm there day one regardless. I had no problem shelling out 60 bucks for a 4 gig at the psp launch I'm sure I will shell out more for the vita launch. So much for downloading vita games lol. Imagine if uncharted golden abyss is like 2gigs. Lol. Your screwed. It's all a profit deal. I just accept it. If you wanna be the cool guy with the latest tech you will over pay by 300% every single time.
I plan on buying physical copies of my games whenever possible, so maybe I'll be able to make that meager 4GB work until there's a better alternative.
It saddens me that Sony refuses to give up on proprietary storage formats. I'm generally not a big fan of handheld gaming as a whole, and this does nothing to help my lack of enthusiasm.

@Aurain The 3DS sold over 7 million units before Black Friday, has two million sellers already, and possibly three more by the end of the year between Mario 3D, Mario Kart, and Monster Hunter 3G in Japan. It's doing fine.
That's insane. even if this memory reads faster, it's still insane. They can't be serious. I'll probably get the Vita one day, but for now I might go with the nook or kindle instead. I cna catch up on some reading and they look pretty cool.

So basically between Nintendo doing seppuku with the 3DS launch, Sony killing the Vita with these pricings, what's next, an Xbox Portable, with kinect inside?
Just to say: the psp and its cards and its games keep getting cheaper and cheaper, and on the balance it has been my main gaming device for the past year until Skyrim just pulled me back to the PC. If you are looking at the Vita but annoyed by the price and don't have a psp, ignore all the hate and give it a good look because it is a really fun little device if you can stomach Japanese game. I have a rather large pile I've gotten on sale I still need to get through.
@Salnax The 3DS is not doing just fine. Between the massive last ditch effort price cut, software selection that blows outside first party, and an Analog Nub add-on circus... The 3DS is not doing just fine.

The high price for something that is REQUIRED to play some games is a major setback for anyone who may have wanted the system on day one. The fact is that Sony could have just used an existing memory format and had affordable sticks on day one, but they didn't. I don't think this will make anyone consider not buying a Vita at all, but they're definitely going to lose a lot of day one buyers.

I was predicting 15~25 dollars for the 4gig myself. Anyone thinking they are okay with this, you do realize that you can buy an entire ds (and sometimes an entire psp) game for this, right?
