I think handhelds are on the way out.
However when you have just launched a new console that probably isn't the best policy to adhere too.
Because there is still a market for people who like playing games on the go and prefer buttons?
Also, why do you think they are on the way out? I'm curious.
I love handheld gaming of all kinds. From mobile phones to the 3DS to the Vita, I'll give any handheld a chance. Love 'em.
I don't understand how people fall for this ploy so thoroughly, is there something I'm missing? We defend against the proposed death of consoles when the consoles we already own are trying desperately to be a do-all entertainment box whose gaming experience is becoming more and more PC like without any of the benefits. We defend against the proposed death of dedicated portable gaming handhelds when we're talking about a machine that is trying to do many of the things our smartphones and tablets are doing without much of the convenience. None of it makes sense to me, we're arguing both sides of the coin at the same time.
I know it's kept me from buying one de to the reality the vitas price is $350 rather than $250.
I'd assume a lot since I and many people I know refuse to buy one due to the memory card scam.
The vita is failing?! Nowai! Well, at least I learned my lesson from buying the PSP near its launch date; don't buy Sony's handheld products near launch day unless you are reasonably wealthy or dumb.
1) its too expensive
2) the 3ds, ps3, psp still get more exclusives, and thats what sells systems
the vita, does not get exclusives. point blank.........its all ps3 ports
"Why even bother buying a handheld in the first place now that mobile games have become a serious medium?'
why bother buying any book if the bible is the highest selling? whats the point?
"I think handhelds are on the way out."
the 3ds is the number 1 system in the world.......next
The sales numbers and market trends seem to disagree with you. Did you happen to look at a list of the most desired Christmas gifts last year? The top three spots were iPad, iPod Touch and iPhone respectively. 3DS was in 6th place after non-iPad tablet and a computer. PSP was at the very bottom. Kids want these devices FAR more than dedicated handhelds.
Apple sold 37.04 million iPhones in the 4th quarter of 2011 alone. That's not counting iPads or iPods.
PSVita has what... just over a million units shipped world wide? Which is the bigger market again? Developers are flocking to the mobile market because it's absolutely massive and has ZERO publishing hurdles. Why bother pouring millions of dollars into a developing a game that has such a tiny market?
Handhelds are indeed on their way out. Anyone who can't see it is stuck in the past and is in denial. Hell, I've owned a handheld of every gen since the I got an original Gameboy in 1989. Since I got an iPhone a couple years back, I haven't touched any of my handhelds and have zero plans to buy one again. Why should I carry a handheld system with me when my phone is always on my person?
Nintendo might be able to hold onto a piece of the pie for awhile yet, but I don't foresee Sony creating another handheld after the Vita. If anything they'll make a (true)PSPhone and jump fully onboard the smartphone bandwagon.
Your speaking with irrelevant things........
the 3ds is the number 1 selling system in the world, what the ios products sell is irrelevant......most people dont buy them to play games. So it doesnt matter
The psp has sold 80+ million units worldwide. It did just fine
"Kids want these devices FAR more than dedicated handhelds."
no they dont
"Apple sold 37.04 million iPhones in the 4th quarter of 2011 alone. That's not counting iPads or iPods."
And 4 trillion pc's sold, who cares
"PSVita has what... just over a million units shipped world wide? Which is the bigger market again?"
the bigger gamer market is on dedicated systems
"Developers are flocking to the mobile market because it's absolutely massive and has ZERO publishing hurdles."
Oh so thats why devs put massive support on real handhelds?
" Why bother pouring millions of dollars into a developing a game that has such a tiny market?'
you need to educate yourself
"Handhelds are indeed on their way out. "
3ds is number 1 go away
because some peoples like to play "real games" with joysticks/buttons instead of half assed games?
why buy a game console when you can play flash games on your pc?
...we all know that riding a superbike is the same feeling than riding your bicycle...right?
why eat a big and juicy fillet mignon when you have cheap ass pizzapockets on the market?
Sony announces Vita will cost only $250:
Day one purchase.
Sony announces $100 memory cards, no PSOne Classics support, etc.:
Year 2, Black Friday 1, or possible never purchase.
I could be wrong, but I *think* the sales calculators for the West can't release sales figures without the company's say-so, and Sony doesn't say yes. That way, it can keep saying "shipped" instead of "sold" in press releases.
To be totally honest... it doesnt matter what kids want since the majority buyer of videogames is adults 30-35 or some shit.
Im pretty well off, and have every current gen system, including an ipad, ipod touch, 3ds and vita. I have never spent more than 10 minutes on ANYTHING on the iOS besides imame with the icade. And you can only get that if you jb your shit.
I'm an odd gamer though, I buy things and dont play them for a while, since I do so much other crap. I'm just now replaying liberty city stories on the psp, and have.. probably 1/3 of my current gen system games still in plastic.
The vita will also pick up some major speed as soon as its hacked.. which is taking a lot longer than I thought it would. It took the psp... what.. 2 weeks?
I provided numbers. You blew a bunch of biased smoke up in the air.
3DS has 15.03 million units shipped worldwide. Apple shipped over 37 million in a FOUR MONTH span.
iPhone is number one. Infinity Blade alone had over $30 million in sales. Stop living in denial or just go back under your bridge.
As for the US? The price is too high. It's as simple as that. $250+ for the system, $25+ for a memory card, and $40+ for games. Yes, the system is of higher quality than any smartphone on the market. Yes, the games look a generation better than anything running on a mobile OS. Yes, the controls lend to a better gameplay experience than anything in portable gaming. But the price is tough to swallow.
If you can get me a Vita with a 32GB memory stick (which should only cost $20 with your profit margin to begin with), it's sold. Dedicated gaming systems are not dead. Smartphone games can't replicate the experiences found on a Vita or a 3DS. Get off the iPhone Kool-Aid, please.
Yes, it's exactly like the 3DS's situation.
Except where the 3DS sold eight times as many units and over 50,000 more units than the #2 in console sales.
You sure did provide numbers, they were just irrelevant...
"3DS has 15.03 million units shipped worldwide. Apple shipped over 37 million in a FOUR MONTH span."
And pc's shipped 10 gillion, books shipped 1 skillion, the consoles didnt ship that much either...........
I will say it to you again. Just because something technically sells more doesnt mean it will wipe something out or its even taking customers away at all
"iPhone is number one"
smartphone? sure, game device? no
"Infinity Blade alone had over $30 million in sales"
And wii fit sold 50 million units and made over 600 million in profit. Is that suppose to imply quality? Infinity blade is a terrible game man
"Stop living in denial or just go back under your bridge."
Dude your the one trolling and others are calling you out
Also... yes, kids want iDevices more than handhelds.
Check last Christmas season Nielson ratings.

You'll see that despite all your bluster and bravado, you're wrong. Maybe you should educate yourself before starting in on a debate. Having some sort of proof of your argument typically helps, especially when you're wrong. At least then you can save yourself some embarassment.
"kids want iDevices more than handhelds."
No they dont and no bias poll proves that
Out of any game company nintendo sold the most hardware and software, they know whats up
And youll see that despite all your irrelevant ha;f truthed statements, no matter how insecure you are nothing is going away
You know, I wondered if you were a troll, but all your doing is throwing insult around
Yet again Sony has managed to misunderstand its market upon launching a system and have squandered the good will of the masses with pointless decisions like pricey memory cards. I have certainly not been impressed enough to the point of wanting one.
But the 3DS has Kid Icarus. And that's one mighty fine game.
