I know I've been having fun playing Wipeout 2048, Lumines ES, Legend of Heroes, Mutant Blob Attack, Who's That Flying, and Stardust Delta. I don't know what you're lacking to play, but I'm pretty full for the time being.

I love handheld gaming of all kinds. From mobile phones to the 3DS to the Vita, I'll give any handheld a chance. Love 'em.

Maybe the issue is that while we sit here and talk about how there will always be a market for dedicated handhelds, Sony does not seem to see it that way. Would I buy a $200 brand new Vita that did nothing but game? Probably. Will I pay $300 for a handheld that games and does a bunch of shit my phone does as well? No.
I don't understand how people fall for this ploy so thoroughly, is there something I'm missing? We defend against the proposed death of consoles when the consoles we already own are trying desperately to be a do-all entertainment box whose gaming experience is becoming more and more PC like without any of the benefits. We defend against the proposed death of dedicated portable gaming handhelds when we're talking about a machine that is trying to do many of the things our smartphones and tablets are doing without much of the convenience. None of it makes sense to me, we're arguing both sides of the coin at the same time.

I wonder how much of the low sales is due to the proprietary memory card prices?

I'd assume a lot since I and many people I know refuse to buy one due to the memory card scam.
The vita is failing?! Nowai! Well, at least I learned my lesson from buying the PSP near its launch date; don't buy Sony's handheld products near launch day unless you are reasonably wealthy or dumb.

this is the issue
1) its too expensive
2) the 3ds, ps3, psp still get more exclusives, and thats what sells systems

It's a little early to be writing anything off, but as an outsider looking in it seems Sony hasn't learnt anything from the PSP. It's powerful alright, "PS3 in your hands" some have been saying. Problem is - I have a PS3 in my living room, Nintendo was successful with the DS because they provided experiences you couldn't get anywhere else at the time. Sony were pushing PS2 ports, and going on about "true console experiences" and they're doing it again now. Is a "Console experience" what consumers want from a handheld? Seems the stuff that catches on is playable in bursts (even the stuff on phones) you can't just throw in more save points and voila it's a portable game.
I like and prefer my vita over my 3ds. But it really needs more than anything some system selling games. I really think if it had launched with a monster hunter and call of duty it would not be having these problems right now.
Every single console ever has been flat in the first couple of months, everyone bangs out the releases for the first day and then there's a lag time.

The sales numbers and market trends seem to disagree with you. Did you happen to look at a list of the most desired Christmas gifts last year? The top three spots were iPad, iPod Touch and iPhone respectively. 3DS was in 6th place after non-iPad tablet and a computer. PSP was at the very bottom. Kids want these devices FAR more than dedicated handhelds.
Apple sold 37.04 million iPhones in the 4th quarter of 2011 alone. That's not counting iPads or iPods.
PSVita has what... just over a million units shipped world wide? Which is the bigger market again? Developers are flocking to the mobile market because it's absolutely massive and has ZERO publishing hurdles. Why bother pouring millions of dollars into a developing a game that has such a tiny market?

as someone who doesn't own a smartphone I find that handhelds are just a lot more comfortable although I have no need to get a psvita as I still have quite some fun with my psp and especially the emulators running on it.

Pretty much the same problem as the 3DS last year. No games. I'm not gonna buy a system for 1 or maybe 2 games. Only Uncharted has got me interested for now.

I could be wrong, but I *think* the sales calculators for the West can't release sales figures without the company's say-so, and Sony doesn't say yes. That way, it can keep saying "shipped" instead of "sold" in press releases.

I bought one. I love the thing. I'm waiting patiently for Disgaea 3, although it's a port of a game I own. I think when Gravity Rush comes out here we'll see US sales pick up a bit. But right now there's a lull in the sales domestically because the library is stagnant. Launch library was good but there weren't any AAA titles behind it to sustain things. The same problem is going on in Japan where the launch library was good but they have a lull in sales due to lack of AAA titles. Hopefully 3rd party support will pick up on both shores to sustain the software library. I know I hope for that because the system itself is solid(despite the valid memory card price compaints).
It's crazy to think that selling just over 8,000 of something is an extreme failure. If I sold 8,000 of something I made, I'd probably cry.

Im pretty well off, and have every current gen system, including an ipad, ipod touch, 3ds and vita. I have never spent more than 10 minutes on ANYTHING on the iOS besides imame with the icade. And you can only get that if you jb your shit.
I'm an odd gamer though, I buy things and dont play them for a while, since I do so much other crap. I'm just now replaying liberty city stories on the psp, and have.. probably 1/3 of my current gen system games still in plastic.
The vita will also pick up some major speed as soon as its hacked.. which is taking a lot longer than I thought it would. It took the psp... what.. 2 weeks?

I'm going to be pissed if it ends up like the PSP the past 2 years. I'm still going to buy though. So many great games for it now/coming. Just waiting for a few more and a fucking price drop or third party memory card that's cheaper. I have my 3ds to tide me over. Back on topic, once a Monster Hunter hits it and CoD drops sales will skyrocket.

The lack of post-launch support has been shocking to me. Resistance is the only game I am aware of launching for the system in the coming month or so and I actively follow Vita news. Imagine what common consumers think/are aware of.
Yet again Sony has managed to misunderstand its market upon launching a system and have squandered the good will of the masses with pointless decisions like pricey memory cards. I have certainly not been impressed enough to the point of wanting one.

The Vita and 3DS are both fantastic. They both have a good library of games, and the Vita is still gaining, albeit occasionally losing, speed. Give it some time

yeah, the post launch game release schedule is pretty sad. i'm excited for resistance and gravity rush but... that's it. nothing else to look forward to other than the nebulous vita bioshock game which has only been announced as 'a thing that exists'. i hope E3 has a lot of news this year - they at least need to announce a vita GOW and give a release window for killzone, right!?
