Where did you see it was co-developed by Capcom? It's first party.
Also, this third party grip doesn't add buttons that may be crucial to the enjoyment of future games.
At its unveiling.
And the fact that Sakurai(Kd Icarus, SSB) Didn't know about it until the unveiling adds weight to the assumption that 3rd parties wanted it more than Nintendo did.
Furthermore, a revision of the 3ds really is unlikely. There is no room for an additional slide pad without increasing the overall size, as the "empty" space on the right side contains Something that heats up pretty bad(I assume the battery), not to mention two extra buttons with no room either. These overlooked factors, among several others, make a 3ds revision just as silly as the one I'm joking about.
@magnalon
I too think he's mistaken, I think a lot of people got mixed up when it was announced to come out along side, and to be packed with, Monster Hunter 3G.
"And the fact that Sakurai(Kd Icarus, SSB) Didn't know about it until the unveiling adds weight to the assumption that 3rd parties wanted it more than Nintendo did. "
While the latter of your comment maybe true, that doesn't mean they actually made it with anyone else, just with everyone else in mind.
As for the former part of your comment, Sakurai and Nintendo seem to not communicate very well.. or have we forgotten Iwata's hail mary pass-like announcement of a new SSB game, only to have Sakurai say "umm.. no?"? I wouldn't mistake intercompany lack of communication for some sort of big outside conspiracy -otherwise there'd be plenty of companies we'd have to worry about, here and abroad.
"Furthermore, a revision of the 3ds really is unlikely."
Have you even tried to fit the 3DS into a normal sized pocket? Nintendo doesn't seem to care one bit about size as long as it still falls into "handheld", based on that simple, easy to test, fact alone.
They may stick to their guns about there not being a revision to the system (something they've said more then once prior to its japanese launch) but it won't be because of size issues. Not when the XL DS has had pretty strong sales.
"Something that heats up pretty bad(I assume the battery), not to mention two extra buttons with no room either."
Yes, it'd the battery, but as for the other stuff (extra bumper buttons, the extra slide pad) go on YouTube and look for a video of someone pulling apart a 3DS. I watched a.. 14min, one I think.. just a couple weeks ago (when the YouTube app came to the 360) and you'd notice while real estate is more or less tight in the current build, the things you listed that they'd add wouldn't eat up a huge amount of space if the system was made slightly bigger. In fact, the video confirmed -for me- that Nintendo could have probably fit a bigger, longer lasting battery, into the 3DS and it would have been fine -but they probably wanted to make use of their existing stock (and deal with) the current battery brand.
I know I read it somewhere, but I can't find it. So I suppose I was wrong. Sorry.
I did find a story about Yoshida from Sony saying that he speculates the slide pad was a 3rd party insistence though... just like you said. Either way, that was my general point, though I was wrong about actual design investment it seems...
The thing about a revision, however, is that the hardware aspect is just a part of what makes it unlikely. The slide pad is not mandatory, and few games so far use it. Why waste money adding a so far unneeded and underused feature?
Such a revision will only be realistic if/when it gains tremendous dev and consumer support, and that could take a long time.
And as for making the system bigger, if such a thing did come about it would be as a side show revision; just like the dsiXL.
