PS Vita firmware update 1.61 released photo

People wonder why I make fun of Sony's firmware updates all the time. Well, the PS Vita is only just officially launching in the United States tomorrow, and we're already up for update 1.61. Start as you mean to go on, right Sony?

To be fair, we've not yet entered the "minor stability fixes" series of updates with the Vita yet, so the new firmware actually makes some noticeable changes. Here's what you'll be getting in exchange for your time:

  • Maps application.
  • Ability to take videos with the Photo application.
  • If you rate something on the PS Store, you can push it to Facebook.
  • The last 100 players you've encountered in Near will appear on the Discoveries screen.
  • Mac OS support for Content Manager.

So it begins. I look forward to bringing you news of 1.62 soon!

I actually think Sony may have been paying attention to you Jim. If each update they released came with a new app and expanded functionality for existing ones, there might be nothing to complain about. Between this and the recent PS3 update which actually did things (I'm told), this could shape up to be the best year yet for fans of firmware updates.

By the way, does anyone have a Vita they can send to me? I can cover the shipping if you need.

I realise it can be a nuisance to constantly be updating firmware, but isn't it better to add new features and fix old ones than to... well, not?

It's a growing trend to release unfinished products and then sweep all the issues people are having under the "next update" rug.

Well, I have a Japanese Vita . . . and I already had these features . . . And I had to update it again. Weird.

Also, it may be unrelated but later, my rear touch pad stopped working. Had to reboot my Vita. :P

Why is it bad that they update their systems a lot?

This will actually be my first Sony device but what ticks others off is that you must download the update (read: no "download later" option) before using software. It cuts into people's gaming time. That said, this update seems substantial enough to be warranted.

I think the Mac OS support is actually pretty big. I'm still unable to officially connect my PSP to my MacBook.

just updated mine and to my surprise, it took less than 60 seconds. It was actually painless! No 45 min down time here, while they are sure to be frequent, at least they are fast

@darcade

because we all have a horribly slow internet connection and we'd never complain about systems that don't get updates ever and have bugs, your system crashed due to some error that could have been fixed in an update?

No biggie, you didn't have to wait 10 minutes to play your game 3 weeks ago so its all good.

At least it isn't just a security update, adding features is good.
