PS Vita designer wants a thinner machine photo

PS Vita (and Walkman) designer Takashi Sogabe would like future PS Vita models to be thinner than they currently are. The original Vita was going to be slimmer than it is, but the engineers couldn't make it happen.

"Speaking not only about the PS Vita, we always have a battle between engineers and designers. The original design of the PS Vita, for example, was very much thinner than the current retail product," he revealed to CVG"From a designer's point of view, thinner is better-looking, but the engineers wanted to put all the features in

"Maybe it will become thinner in the future, but the engineers would have to come up with a means to do that. The main effort for me was to make this product happen. The buttons and analog sticks were perhaps not in the best position from a design point of view, but we felt they were the best solution from a publisher's point of view. As a designer, I wanted to use metal rather than plastic, but because there are a lot of antennae in the body, we couldn't use metal."

It's pretty interesting to learn about the practicalities of console design. I can't speak for any of it, but it's cool to know nonetheless!

Next PS Vita 'could be thinner', says designer [CVG]

What's wrong with it being bulky, stop with all the thin fashion I say.
I'm tired of all these close to anorexic models, and people not having any self-esteem.
...
....Oh, we're talking about a gadget, carry on then Jeeves.

While we're at it, can we get a clear plastic version so we can see all the innards. I want my x-ray electronics porn, dammit!

why can't they just make it more bulky and give it a bigger battery because that would really make it a lot better.

the fuck? It's already very thin! and what qlum said -- if they cut battery life I'm going to go all laser eyes

One thing I noticed at E3 was the awkward shuffle Yoshinori Ono and Ken Levine had to do to actually get the Vita out of their pockets. I guess it’s hard to squish a console down to the size of a controller and still make it sleek, especially with analogue sticks and all.

I want some color in my devices already. As much I like black, I can't help but remember the various game boy color um colors and wish these guys would remember that ice blue and atomic purple were the best thing since sliced bread.

Geez Sony, its fine as is. As a guy with big hands, thinner means more hand cramps. I could do without that.

My designer wanted me to be thinner, too, but my engineers insisted I be fat to get all my features in.

PSVita Lite confirmed before it even launches. Good fucking job, $ony!

I wasn't interested in any of the launch titles anyways(the Vita is the PSP all over again) other than the recently hacked PS3 titles and this just solidifies my decision to not even consider getting one.

I'd rather have a sports model with a little bulk over a thin anorexic one any day of the week. So fuck off Sony! You dirty whores you.

I am seriously thinking of waiting for a later version of the Vita. Btw, I am extremely excited for this thing, but with talk of better ones on the horizon, why don't we all wait it out for them?

You are fast becoming the new sofik. Every post i see of yours is making ridiculous statements about the Vita, like that is has no games (wut, there 29+ launch titles).
And he called them $ony as well. The same logic can be used for Micro$oft too then.

On topic, I see no reason for these 'sleek, sexy designs' that hardware aims for these days. The Vita is pretty thin anyway, but I still admire the bulkiness, makes it feel more solid, like a real MACHINE. Thats why the original Xbox and PS2 were so awesome!

Blah blah blah, Not buying Vita because there'll be a revision later, Blah blah blah

See, it isn't limited to Nintendo, I guess, cause surely people will take that stance. Either way, I can care less if its thinner or not, it looks fine as is and I'll get it whenever I feel I have the money (which is technically now, but I can still use a few more of my money loopholes to make the pot sweeter, and I can't do that right now.)

They should have said fuck all to 3G and released a XL(bigger system/battery) and Lite(thin faggy iOS-like, small battery)

Bigger battery > thinness.

Handling those wafer thin iPod Nanos/Touches are a pain also. Thin isn't always ergonomically pleasing.

FIRST, maybe fix the gigantic failure rate problem. it was reported that Vita currently has OVER 10% FAILURE RATE and we're only a 1.5 month since launch.

I'm getting a degree in design, so this sort of thing is what gets me hot under the collar. I'd love for them to post tons of early drawings and design prototypes to see how it progressed and how the battle between designers and engineers made the device we know as the Vita now.

Nah, XBox 360 wins at failure rates so much that Microsoft had to extend the warranty to 3 years to keep people from suing them.

What if they made the analog sticks collapsible? Maybe you could just twist them to unlock and lock their position. And when they're unlocked, you just push them into the system.

(... God, that sounded awfully sexual. But still.)

That would make the PSVita way more portable.

I don't care if theres a redesign in the future, I'm getting this thing on launch day. Already got it paid off with Wipeout 2048, Gravity Rush and MvC3. Getting a 32GB memory card for all of the psn content I already downloaded. I am going to love this system I know this already.

The only thing I would like for them to do is make it able to play the ps2 games on psn. And then put Nocturne, Digital Devil Saga and Wipeout Fusion on there. Listen to me Sony/Atlus... I'm not the only one!

I was just about to say that. It's not like something similar hasn't been done with that 360 controller with the transforming d-pad. Not like I really care about the portability of the thing. I put my psp in a bag already whenever I take it anywhere, and I rarely take it anywhere. :D

Really? I wouldn't want it any thinner. It would be less ergonomic. I also think the button and stick position is great. It is for me at least.
