PS Vita (and Walkman) designer Takashi Sogabe would like future PS Vita models to be thinner than they currently are. The original Vita was going to be slimmer than it is, but the engineers couldn't make it happen.
"Speaking not only about the PS Vita, we always have a battle between engineers and designers. The original design of the PS Vita, for example, was very much thinner than the current retail product," he revealed to CVG. "From a designer's point of view, thinner is better-looking, but the engineers wanted to put all the features in.
"Maybe it will become thinner in the future, but the engineers would have to come up with a means to do that. The main effort for me was to make this product happen. The buttons and analog sticks were perhaps not in the best position from a design point of view, but we felt they were the best solution from a publisher's point of view. As a designer, I wanted to use metal rather than plastic, but because there are a lot of antennae in the body, we couldn't use metal."
It's pretty interesting to learn about the practicalities of console design. I can't speak for any of it, but it's cool to know nonetheless!
Next PS Vita 'could be thinner', says designer [CVG]

Destructoid is an open discussion community. You don't need to "audition" to post a comment - just speak your mind. We respect differing opinions on the site, so have at it. Be smart, funny, insightful, clueless, or cute -- but back it up with substance. Keep your cool, keep it fun. We only ask that you act respectfully and above all: don't be a troll and ruin it for everyone else. Don't bring down gamers or we'll, you know, gently shoot you in the face and stuff you into a flaming mailbox. Each comment is your opportuntity to make this community awesomer. Is that even a word?
Avoiding the banhammer only requires common sense: spamming, trolling, racism, NSFW stuff, and other forms of sucking will not be tolerated. If anyone is griefing please report abuse. Be good. Don't suck!
I'm tired of all these close to anorexic models, and people not having any self-esteem.
...
....Oh, we're talking about a gadget, carry on then Jeeves.
TO THE FUBUS!!
I wasn't interested in any of the launch titles anyways(the Vita is the PSP all over again) other than the recently hacked PS3 titles and this just solidifies my decision to not even consider getting one.
No they don't... no one gives a shit about your buying habits.
You are fast becoming the new sofik. Every post i see of yours is making ridiculous statements about the Vita, like that is has no games (wut, there 29+ launch titles).
And he called them $ony as well. The same logic can be used for Micro$oft too then.
On topic, I see no reason for these 'sleek, sexy designs' that hardware aims for these days. The Vita is pretty thin anyway, but I still admire the bulkiness, makes it feel more solid, like a real MACHINE. Thats why the original Xbox and PS2 were so awesome!
See, it isn't limited to Nintendo, I guess, cause surely people will take that stance. Either way, I can care less if its thinner or not, it looks fine as is and I'll get it whenever I feel I have the money (which is technically now, but I can still use a few more of my money loopholes to make the pot sweeter, and I can't do that right now.)
Handling those wafer thin iPod Nanos/Touches are a pain also. Thin isn't always ergonomically pleasing.
And people wonder why I won't buy this at launch
Letters numbers and spaces are ok

This made me chuckle, cause it's so fucking true.
Nah, XBox 360 wins at failure rates so much that Microsoft had to extend the warranty to 3 years to keep people from suing them.
(... God, that sounded awfully sexual. But still.)
That would make the PSVita way more portable.
The only thing I would like for them to do is make it able to play the ps2 games on psn. And then put Nocturne, Digital Devil Saga and Wipeout Fusion on there. Listen to me Sony/Atlus... I'm not the only one!
I was just about to say that. It's not like something similar hasn't been done with that 360 controller with the transforming d-pad. Not like I really care about the portability of the thing. I put my psp in a bag already whenever I take it anywhere, and I rarely take it anywhere. :D
The battery holds longer than the 3DS.
