PS Vita bilinear filtering makes PSP games look better photo

PSP games played on the new PlayStation Vita will see a bit of a visual upgrade with the system's bilinear filtering option. Sony Japan says that it smooths out the roughness in PSP games. I'd imagine that the big, brilliant Vita screen would show the rough edges of PSP games easily.

Tapping and holding down on the Vita screen during play of a PSP game will bring up an options menu, and in there you'll be able to select this filtering option, along with options for right analog stick use and others.. 4Gamer says that once they found this somewhat hidden option, they noticed smoother graphics and text, though they said it didn't have a huge effect in Monster Hunter Portable 3rd. This video shows both the option menu and the filtering at work on PSP game Final Fantasy Type-0

There's an image that has been going around, and it gives a detailed look at the effect of this option. You can see part of that image above. Left, you'll see the unfiltered image; the right shows the effect applied. Another Japanese blog highlights the changes in text, as you'll see below the jump.

What do you think? Will you be using the bilinear filtering option on your Vita when you play PSP games?

I don't know, but to me, the top left one looks better than the right.

That is pretty cool. Sony made a good little move here. Especially considering how DS games on the 3DS actually look worse rather than better.

Yeah, I personally prefer pixellated upscaled art to blurred upscaled art. Especially when it's pixel art.

Are my eyes broken or is the one on the top left better, like Namo said?

Literally two hours ago you posted an article on how this exact type of filtering makes GBA games look "like ass," and now it's making PSP games look "better."

I don't know about you, but the one on the right just looks blurred and desaturated...

I also vote for the non-filtered image.

I thought the resolution of the Vita's screen was exactly four times the PSP's? So that means perfect upscaling, right?

Resolution seems better, but man that picture too darkened to be appealing! Win for non-filtered.

The one on the top left is obviously zoomed in, in order to show the reduced alising around the edges. Hard to tell with that awful picture.

I'll have to agree, I'd rather have upscaled pixels instead of a blur over everything. But it's nice they threw it in there, the same way Nintendo allows you to output GBA/DS games in their original formats.

I think the only way to judge this is to see it in person, but by the screenshots alone it looks better without filtering. My guess is that some games will look better with it while others will look worse, it's just a nice little extra.

I could go for some purtier looking Dissidia 012 time. Not that I'm going to repurchase it just so I could play it on the Vita, but at least it looks good for those who will.

So, I am assuming this is for bitmap images in things like art assets in 2D art and textures.

If it looks good, I will give it a try.

Regardless if you like it on or off, it's great that the option is there, as opposed to the 3DS where you can't do anything.

Is it done to the frame in post like FXAA/MLAA? That would work with 2D *and* 3D assets. If not, they should add 2xAA to 3D elements in PSP games, would probably make a huge difference.

"along with options for right analog stick use "

And yet when I said that they could have done this with a PSP revision like the GO, everyone told me that it would "segment the userbase"

I always knew they could just map the analog to the face buttons. How difficult is that? They did it with the PS1, why not the PSP. But we had to wait for a whole new system to get that option. At least werer getting it now.

I hate when consumers are such morons that it holds back technology and advancement. "Durr I like to pay for free content"

Still no physical media, so I won't be taking advantage of this. Well, until I put custom firmware on it, which is already possible, apparently.

If this is a good thing, then shouldn't it look better when the filter is on, rather than when the filter is off?

Difference is minimal at best, and it's debatable which images look bettter. Still, nice to include the option. I'm really glad the second stick will be configurable for legacy games.

That does look better.

Reminds me of all the games I'm playing on a PS2 emulator despite having the actual games and console.
