these "hurry quick!" deals always bother me
And to echo the "don't try to make your own"- it's supposedly a reverse engineered usb "jig" that Sony warranty factories use to rez 'dead'/defunct ps3s, so Sony might only be able to block it by changing hardware, PSP style.
Could you confirm this?
what else does this let you do? you cant play ps2 or ps1 games with it.
you can already play any ps3 region game on any ps3(i believe) anyway, so you dont need this to play imports like back in the old days.
you can just rip a game to the hard drive and then play it.. eg. sign up for gamefly.. rent all the games you can.. rip them all to the HD... profit.
Assuming I had a PS3 and wanted to pirate, my monthly transfer before being cutoff or charged $1/GB is 50GB. Metal Gear Solid 4 was what, 40 gigs or so? I can buy a new copy of MGS4 cheaper.
Likewise the Hard Drives. The absolutely huge size of the games means that pirates won't be able to have more than a couple games before having to switch drives. Not to mention transfer rates...
This won't be an R4 for the PS3. A DS game is a fraction of a percent of the size of a PS3 game, which is why piracy is so rampant. That will not be an issue for Sony's system.

Not only are they thieves, they take people's money out of it. Also, jailbreak should be free, asking people to pay for this is simply unacceptable. It's only a softmod, it's not even a real mod.
exactly and all softmods should remain FREE
I'm not sure if this technically qualifies as a softmod. My impressions from the video are that you have to activate the debug mode everytime you want to play your backups. Thus the dongle isn't just a temporary boot strap to get unsigned code onto the console after which you're home free. It's just a hardware mod that doesn't require you to open up the device. Am I incorrect in this assessment?
No. It's a softmod through and through, but a temporary one. Temporary, of course, in the sense that it must be applied every time the PS3 is powered on.
EDIT: No, I take that back. I think it's a hybrid. A hardmod because you're using additional hardware regardless of opening the PS3. However, a softmod because said hardmod uses some special software to modify the PS3 on boot to run unsigned code.
Yeah, from what I've gathered from some of the more technical people in the community, the first stage runs like Sony's hardware jig and the the second stage is a software exploit. Piecing together various data sources, it allegedly goes something like this.
1. PS3 is told to look at USB ports for infomation using the power-eject button sequence
2. USB dongle does a handshake using code run via the MCU (the hardware part)
3. The PS3 expects an authorisation key from the USB device
4. The mod uses some type of exploit to fool the PS3 into thinking that it's sent an auth key.
I'm interested in the technical side and have looked at prices of the specific chip needed. Shame I can only find bulk prices! But they're available at around $4-5 USD if bought in bulk.
Also, www.jailbreakx3.com is a clone that some people have got their hands on. Should be with distributers by early next week and has a rumored price of $20-40. one hell of a saving.
Most multi-platform games are under the size of their 360 counterpart in terms of download size.
Hell, Burnout Paradise is under 4gb on PS3 and 8gb on 360 due to the way 360 ISOs work.
Twats.
I'm no fan of piracy but Sony, I want you to get dicked over by this for lets say, a few months, before you can figure a fix. You deserve it for being short sighted and punitively taking features away for, as has now been proven and was stated clearly by many before, no good reason since pirates will eventually find a way.
And so. It begins.
Let us hold hands and stand in a circle while we stare at the PS3 in the middle.
Really? Huh. You'd think more developers and publishers would be using that space for something. Hell, with this news, I wouldn't surprised if publishers DO start "filling the gaps", so to speak.
The point still stands for single-plat games or games which are multiple discs on other platforms, though.
Avoid been banned from the PSN ins't too hard ... just play offline games, if you want to upload trophies, go to the regular OS and upload it.
I live in Brazil and here is one of the countries that have a huge pirate based industries, that's because the taxes that raise the price from the games in about 200%+( modnation racers US$60 == R$230 Brazil currency ).
We have a online petition, who may become a law that will lower that taxes, named
"Jogo justo"( fair game - literal translation ), if approved will help avoid the piracy here. I hope this law become a real thing ...
First off, most of the blu-rays are padded with lots of zeroes- remember the hubub over some fo the launch titles "filling the discs" only to find out they were using totally uncompressed files and padding? And as for compression, look at the dreamcast, most games were designed for DVD-RAMs but pirates trimmed and compressed games to fit on cd-rs, at the cost of load times. I would bet you that most games would get pared down to xbox 360-sized files, easy. Never underestimate pirates, they will go to great lengths to get free (to them) software.
I hope some devs will start to use more of the Blu-ray, just to make paracy harder/longer ! And put more content !
Not just fill up with "nothing" lol.
I had homebrew running on both my PS2 and original Xbox. Developing for the Xbox was easy since the SDK was awesome and plugged right into VS. The PS2 was a nightmare and never really got off the ground.
So, until there is a CFW or exploit that is undetectable to launch my own back-ups (as others have said, games are too large) I'll ignore this.
Not interested in being the tip of the spear on this...
I'm sure a lot of people would care. And Sony bans the PS3's MAC address, not just the PSN account.
Where do you live that you internet is capped? I've heard that it was the case in some places but I don't actually know anyone who has a service provider with a cap.
Comcast, for example, has no upload/download limits for its most basic cable internet service here in Pennsylvania. File size really isn't a deterrent for most pirates. I could download a full bluray's worth of data every couple of days if the torrent is running smoothly.
That being said, I don't see any chance of me buying this unless it's at the very end of the PS3's life-cycle and I want to create the ultimate classic game emulation machine. Even then I'd probably be more likely to buy one of those awesome Pocket Retro Game Emulators on thinkgeek instead of bothering with this thing.
Also, the reason why the R4 destroyed the DS for so long is because you never have to update the damn thing! (the DS, I mean) It's not really an online-focused system so there's not really a risk of Nintendo forcing an update or banning you from doing anything. I like being online all the time with my PS3. I wouldn't want to jeopardize that.
Comcast has had a cap of 250GB per month for roughly two years now. Most people don't notice since you really have to put your back into it to reach 250GB, but it's there.
I've got one thing to say on this subject...
Buy your Fucking games. I sincerely hope Sony remotely bricks every console that has one of these plugged into it.
The games industry needs our money to keep improving and making the games we all love so dearly.
I say again, buy your Fucking games.
I still have no plans to get one but I think this will boost PS3 sales tremendously, albeit while cannibalizing software sales.
I don't think Sony will be able to patch this without a hardware revision.
not the best move, to me anyway.
100 dollars+ to pirate something + the cost of a system?
Chance of being banned, possibility of bricking your ps3, and for those of us that run the backwards compatible models like me? its not worth it.
PASS.HARD.
the 360 has a similar ability and i think sony will handle it the same way and it won't be such a big deal.
end of the day this seems like a bit more trouble than any other method of piracy because you are still giving someone unnecessary money and at just under the price of two games with no risk.
eh is how i feel. eh.
i also find it funny that
the ps3 was unappealing to everyone when it was 500 dollars and had no games
it was unappealing when it was 300 and had a decent amount.
it was unappealing when everyone whined about how the 360 had better online
so now when its 300 and has a 100 dollar method of piracy that you can't play games online with it's suddenly desired?
good luck to anyone who decides to pirate, and lets just hope they don't add disk based updates like they did for the psp, (which prevented pirates from buying and playing ANY games legally, bad move there lol)
