PS Home active users on the rise for some perverse reason photo

PlayStation Home may be a big pile of wank, but that hasn't stopped the "service" being downloaded 6.5 million times since launch, proving humanity's lust for all things mediocre. According to Home directer Peter Edwards, the number of users that have been sampling the "delights" of Home is on the rise. Yes, people have gone into Home, thought, "This looks like a good idea," and then stayed there.

"I think it's gone very well - I'm very pleased," he explains. "We went to open beta in December and since then we've had something like 6.5 million downloads. We've got a very healthy active user base, and we're finding as well that people aren't just churning, they're returning - which is obviously key for something like this.

"You start off with everybody interested in what's going on, people come along and have a look around, and that then starts to tail off - but you get to a point where people come back. There's more and more content going in, there are more things to do, and people come back to have a look around - and then they realize there's loads of content."

He also adds that there are "more people coming back than leaving," so there are those that did not try Home once, then hurriedly wiped it from their hard drives in horror. Well, congratulations to Sony for finding something that resonates with the general public. It may be dumb, but dumb is what the people want. One cannot begrudge Sony's success in that department.

...why?

Home is so lame. I go in there about once a month to see if anything is worth while, tuns out... not

The only fun thing to do (and I use the term "fun" loosely) is to make your character a female, start dancing until someone comes up and starts dancing with you, then instantly turn your character into a fat old guy and watching the other guy stop and walk away.

Yeah, woohoo... Home!

I want to believe that they're counting each time it forces you to redownload areas after an update to make that 6.5 million count. Unfortunately I can't believe that because I have that little faith in the average PS3 owner. Especially here in the UK where it's the chav console of choice.

Some people honestly dig home, a few people on my friends list use it constantly.

Personally I check in to see what's happening, and usually leave in 5 minutes.

I mean, Fuck, I mean, surely you want to play games on your PS3 when you go home, not go home on your PS3 to play games...?

I don't see what's so horrid about it, at least in concept if not necessarily in execution. There's an intriguing ARG going on that's got a lot of folks hooked, and there are a lot more spaces and crap going up for grabs. Now, if more of that crap were free...

I'd still like to see Sterling give one compelling argument for why Home is some kind of unexpected failure. It does exactly what they said it was going to do from day one.

I find the purpose of Home hard to ascertain. It may be true that people use it regularly, but I can't see why. I have way more fun actually playing real games online with my friends that I do running around in a plaza full of idiots or spending 1.99 for a cowboy hat or some crappy furniture for an apartment with a view I could never afford in real life. Fuck that.

If Home were still the same as it was when it launched, I'd be surprised. However, he mentions that there is much more content now. I haven't checked, but we've heard of how many free games you can now play? It's not that surprising that people are wasting time playing free games. I mean, there are sites with thousands of those on the Internet.

I love that every system has their "I hate video games" go-to app now for adults who think games suck.

Xbox 360 - 1vs100/Uno/Avatar games
PC - The Sims
PS3 - Home
The Wii - Itself/Wii Fit

This article almost makes me want to install Home again, just to see what I've been missing. But I've done it before...and un-installed in a matter of minutes.

People should feel bad paying and playing a second-rate Second Life on their PS3 when they should be playing real games.

Sony have ripped off Second Life, and Xbox LIVE.
Who will be the next target?

I'd take Live over PSN any day, prescription fee or no. My mobile phone costs shit-loads more and doesn't even give me the tiniest fraction of enjoyment that Live does. Besides, Sony would loce to charge for their online sevice, but they saw the free online gaming as a way of enticing gamers away from the competition. It was a move born of necessity, not nobility. And it hasn't really affected the compettion in an adverse way. Plus Live is better than PSN (seen it argued against, but never proven), and as the old man says: You gets what you pays fer.

U.S Region of home isn't bad at all. I would say my friends drop in there about once to twice a week for some pool, cards or bowling. Not to mention the Xi ARG.

Mind at one point my friends were all local, so we would just head out and ACTUALLY play pool and such. However, since the economy went south, my friends had to pick up and move to keep employed.

NO! YOU WILL NOT turn this into a "PS Free" Versus "Xbox Gold Mine Non-Free Shitty" argument! This is about Home!

Also, legitimate question: Did anyone notice that you get a free trial of XBLA Gold if you turn it down? So, if you weren't an achievement whore, and just wanted to play games for fun, could you just technically make a new hotmail account every month? It would probably stop a lot of the "Xbox costs monies" waambulance squad.

ChaosTeaCup: I know you're like 12 or something, but it's SUBscription. And btw, I've seen it argued that Live is better than PSN, but I've never seen that proven either.

No.

No.

I'll admit to not acting my age just then. The 'fuck you' comment was pathetic. But I get annoyed by shit like that. Sorry.

You're comment about not being able to prove the superiority of either network is bang on. It's all based on personal experience in my case, but seeing as we're all different, experience counts for shit. The only other gaugable system is SUBscription take-up. We know the results for that one.

Live is better than PSN, period. It offers more features and the ones they share are easier to use. Now, is it worth the yearly subscription? That is up for debate. Live seems to have random downtime, but overall stability is probably higher, considering the PSN practically goes down every time a marquee title is released. LBP wasn't up for a week or more.

Also, Home is still a giant minigame collection, not much more.

Eh, Home is in no way for me, but I think it's a bit too much to call it wank. I logged in last week to get the free homespace and there were a crap load of people enjoying themselves. Even saw some people dressed as pirate and Redfield having a dance off or something.

"but overall stability is probably higher, considering the PSN practically goes down every time a marquee title is released"

Never had an issue connecting to PSN like you explain above.

It is silly, but when I hear about a new area and I'm feeling bored and curious I go and have a peek. That said, I certainly don't use it regularly.

Seems all peeps are interested is getting some game exclusive outfit for their avatar, or hitting on female avatars. I just wish Sony would stop half-assing things (Bowling, StageSet) and actually put out feature rich content.
