Prototype on the cheap on Steam: $40 photo

Our absolutely massive review of Prototype featured the views of three of our editors, and came with a bonus music video. The end result? A respectable score of 7.5 out of 10. That means that we feel it's a solid game. And it is. It was solid enough for the original asking price of $59.99, and so it's definitely worth the limited-time price of $40.

The good folks at Steam have dropped the price of Activision's latest action game by 20 percent, letting you nab it for $40. This price is good through August 13th, or about a week. Not bad for such a new game. I guess that this is one of the better parts of being a PC gamer -- you get things for cheaper and see more sales. I think it'll be awhile before we see price drops on the console version.

Have any of you tried the PC version? If so, how does it compare to the console one?

20% of $60 dollars... is... $40?

My Nazi Number attempt wasn't well thought out. I'm a moron.

I meant 20% off $60. Either way, my nitpick is now null and void because I suck.

I won't buy an Activision game new, not after they made my Tim Schafer cry.

Yeah, Activision can go huff dong in my opinion.

I'll only buy their games used after Kotick's recent comments.

This is acceptable. I shall wait for every Activision game from now on to have these Steam deals.

Or wait for the "Activision MEGAPACK" for £9999999. One or the other.

Activision vs EA, who's the bigger evil?

As of Activision taking over Blizzard, I think Activision is the bigger one... Don't quote me on this, I THINK that's true... :D Anyway, EA sucks anyway, so...

@ammoelf3: it was $60 for the console version, $50 for the PC, and 20% off $50 is indeed $40. Damn confusing retail prices.

And as for the PC version of prototype, even being a HUGE PC gamer, the PC controls for 3rd person games always feel wonkey to me. I just ended up playing it with the 360 controller anyways. And the graphics didn't seem any better in spite of me being able to run games like Crysis at almost max settings.

That's $40 you could be putting towards inFamous and kicking Kotick in the junk. You will have more fun with inFamous and it is a lot less cliche than [Prototype].

EA's been pretty not very evil lately. Even in the Sports division they try to innovate within the genre.

I think.

Fuck Activision, buy InFamous or Red Faction Guerilla instead.

Prototype was weak anyway, unless you're 12 years old.

We've been over and over this here, and the consensus is that Prototype is better. The crowd hath spoken, and you sir are outnumbered.

Played prototype for about 10 hrs and just lost interest. It was great at first, but after a while it just seemed really bland. The game had great ideas,it just felt like after they figured out they made a game where you could do a flying death kick at helicopters they just signed off and filled in the gaps. I also realize that for some reason I'm one in few that feels this way.

I'll get it for that price... my PC gaming boards have said it's a good port and a good game.

@leatlasers, i'm surprised you lasted 10hours. I lasted 10 minutes. It's horrendous on PC.

Spend that $40 on a crapload of cheap steam games, and Plants Vs. Zombies.

I found Prototype to play pretty well on the PC. The problem is is that its quite a boring game after a while, that why i stopped playing.

@ Autumn

The 85 for Infamous and 78 for Prototype on Metacritic would appear to disagree with you.

Yeh, true. I've only played InFamous and I enjoyed it for about 5 hours and then it became repetitive drivel. The comments around Dtoid have served to convince me that Prototype is probably much more enjoyable, but whatever.

This argument is long dead.

Does this game get decent at some point? If I hadn't whored Alone in the Dark for trophies I'd say it's the worst game I've played all year. From what I've seen of it it's definitely the worst game I've played that was released this year.

Chronic Logic: Activision, and they have been for several years. When EA is the top publisher again they'll be the worst. Seems to be the nature of the business.

Prototype on PC is $50 typically - not %60. Damn Dale North this is the second time I've seen you get facts wrong. Get your shit together.

If you want to buy Prototype just buy it from direct2drive.co.uk for just 15 pounds (~25 dollars)
It's a bit fuuny that there is a sale for this game on d2d too this week but this blog reports only on the one on steam where the price is much higher, we all allready know that you all are the bigest valve fans stop trying to show it so hard.

Well, shit. I was going to bitch and moan at OrangeJuice, but he is indeed correct, it's 15 quid on DirectToDrive. I'll have to keep an eye on that site from now on.

Very smart move. Whether on purpose or accident, they launched their game right at the same time as a rather direct competitor (inFamous).

Getting the leg up on the competition does wonders for sales. Lower price, get on Steam....do what you gotta do to seperate yourself from the pack.
