Prototype had multiplayer? Oh, well it doesn't now photo

If, for some bizarre reason, you were looking forward to Prototype's multiplayer features, then now is the time to retract pre-order plans and shake your fist in the air as if to futilely reprimand God for his sunken glory. The previously planned co-op component of Prototype has been scrapped, leaving it a game for loners only.

Radical's Tim Bennison explained that the dev team felt they would not "be able to pull it off with the same level of quality and polish that we're aiming for with the original single player story."

While some people will whine about this, I actually commend Radical's decision. Rather than tack on a shoddy multiplayer option that probably wouldn't get used enough to justify the work, the team has decided to focus purely on crafting a complete single player experience -- I remember the days when we had more of those! Bennison said if the game sells, there's no ruling out future DLC to add multiplayer, but I honestly don't think there'd be much point.

I believe it was a good decision, and hopefully it leads to a polished, complete title, rather than two unfinished halves roughly stuck together with masking tape.

Ah, well. I'm still sorta looking forward to this game anyway.

I agree, I'd rather have a complete game rather than something forced out. I'm tired of rushed games that suck.

I hope the game sells well and they do implement some multiplayer DLC. This game looked like a lot of fun to be had single or multi..plus with GTA4 having confirmed Co-Op this is a mild blow.

I´m ready for some single player action. That´s #1 for me. Multiplayer comes 2nd. On this game that is.

Single player is always the priority for me, so I'm not fussed by this decision. I agree with Jim; I'd rather see a polished, fully fleshed-out single player game, than have one that's 80% realised with a generic multiplayer mode stuck on for the sake of it.

Honestly I mean good multiplayer games are made from the ground up as multiplayer, and good single player games are likewise made from the ground up to be good single player.

I have to agree with you Jim, this seems to be a smart choice.

God dammit. If there is no multi-player the single player story better be 50 hours long.

What do you mean for some bizarre reason? This game is a lot like Crackdown, and the online co-op is the best part!

Are you sure you're a gamer?

It wasn't two separate games, you just played the game with a partner. Jesus do you even research what you talk about anymore? What happened to this place?

As much as I'd love to be able to cause hell with friends online, I'll be happy with a nice, good single player campaign.

Mp really didn't bring me to this game. The ability to jump on top of a helicopter and jack it is the reason I'm getting this game.

I'm with Jim. Multiplayer was the last thing I thought about when this game came to mind. I'm glad the team is focusing on the single player campaign. That way, there's that much less chance for error.

Considering how the dev team behind Prototype has never really produced a game with a strong singleplayer campaign anyway, I must say I'm dissapointed with this. Multiplayer co-op doesn't necessarily have to make any fucking sense. The fact that it's THERE and you can share in the crazy action with a buddy online is what counts. And now that's gone, so I have one less thing to look forward to about Prototype.

I can appreciate a developer that has the foresight to recognize when they're in over their head and has the sensibility to discard an idea when it's obviously not working, instead of cramming it in there just to be able to brand it as an extra feature.

Yeah, I’m fine with the decision — as long as the single-player component is decently long (don’t give me a Heavenly Sword-sized experience) and good, of course.

This new generation of gamers frighten me...

Never once did I hear the devs tout online play, yet without even playing the game it's now ruined because it doesn't go on-line?!?!

No longer are games about fun or gameplay anymore, it's about having on-line play, pretty graphics, and achievements.

Tack achievements and a couple of crap multiplayer modes on a game and it'll sell even if it's a gift-wrapped dog turd you stuff in the disc slot.

I understand what they're saying, it was the same sort of thing with Bioshock and I'm sure it would be for the better. But the second anyone starts playing it all they're going to think about is, "Damn, this game would've been great with some online co-op."

As long as the single player is up top snuff, I'll be satisfied. If it had shitty co-op it would likely end up like Crackdown: fun game without friends, great game with 'em, but the story lacked cohesion and direction as a whole.

I want this game to be better than Crackdown. That is my only hope. This decision will likely help them achieve that goal.

Although, Crackdown WAS a shit ton of fun. Hmm.

I mean, it's all cool wanting to craft a solid single player experience, but I don't imagine this game is going to be any Bioshock.
They actually posted an interview in a magazine just last month where one of the devs (maybe this guy) was talking about how the testers were running co-op and one player had jacked a helicopter and the second did a backflip off a building, landed on the wing, and began hurling missiles by hand. And now I can't do that!?
Just seems like, with this game, destruction is the key element, and I don't know how allowing to people to destroy at once could be considered "tacked on".
I'm bummed. There I said it. Thanks for pissing in my cornflakes, Jim Sterling, if that IS your real name.

Some games just don't work all that well as multiplayer experiences. Vice versa on the single player. I'm sure they know what they're doing, and personally I welcome more single player games.

The only multiplayer games I spend any time with are Team Fortress 2 and Counterstrike anyway...the rest take too much time to learn and get mildly decent at.

I agree with whoever said that this new generation of gamers is absolutely scary!

Newsflash to the under 20 crowd: Despite what you might think, not every game needs multiplayer.

I would buy this game just to spite all the people who are bemoaning the lack-of multiplayer mode. Concentrate on an awesome single player campaign, and don't wait a single resource tacking on shitty boring repetitive online component to appease the whiny FPS bitches. Go play Halo/COD4.

This game looks like it has some potential and I would like a chance for that potential to be realized.
