If, for some bizarre reason, you were looking forward to Prototype's multiplayer features, then now is the time to retract pre-order plans and shake your fist in the air as if to futilely reprimand God for his sunken glory. The previously planned co-op component of Prototype has been scrapped, leaving it a game for loners only.
Radical's Tim Bennison explained that the dev team felt they would not "be able to pull it off with the same level of quality and polish that we're aiming for with the original single player story."
While some people will whine about this, I actually commend Radical's decision. Rather than tack on a shoddy multiplayer option that probably wouldn't get used enough to justify the work, the team has decided to focus purely on crafting a complete single player experience -- I remember the days when we had more of those! Bennison said if the game sells, there's no ruling out future DLC to add multiplayer, but I honestly don't think there'd be much point.
I believe it was a good decision, and hopefully it leads to a polished, complete title, rather than two unfinished halves roughly stuck together with masking tape.

Destructoid is an open discussion community. You don't need to "audition" to post a comment - just speak your mind. We respect differing opinions on the site, so have at it. Be smart, funny, insightful, clueless, or cute -- but back it up with substance. Keep your cool, keep it fun. We only ask that you act respectfully and above all: don't be a troll and ruin it for everyone else. Don't bring down gamers or we'll, you know, gently shoot you in the face and stuff you into a flaming mailbox. Each comment is your opportuntity to make this community awesomer. Is that even a word?
Avoiding the banhammer only requires common sense: spamming, trolling, racism, NSFW stuff, and other forms of sucking will not be tolerated. If anyone is griefing please report abuse. Be good. Don't suck!
Ah, well. I'm still sorta looking forward to this game anyway.
I have to agree with you Jim, this seems to be a smart choice.
Are you sure you're a gamer?
Guy?
*shakes BOTH fists in the air*
i didn't think it was a typo. i thought you changed "guys?" to singular because it's like you realized that only one person played it.
But if this means they'll iron the game out flat then sure, no tears cried. Just don't be sure I will ever touch the game again.
Sure. Right. That's what I meant.
This game will be a 100% buy for me anyways.
Never once did I hear the devs tout online play, yet without even playing the game it's now ruined because it doesn't go on-line?!?!
No longer are games about fun or gameplay anymore, it's about having on-line play, pretty graphics, and achievements.
Tack achievements and a couple of crap multiplayer modes on a game and it'll sell even if it's a gift-wrapped dog turd you stuff in the disc slot.
I want this game to be better than Crackdown. That is my only hope. This decision will likely help them achieve that goal.
Although, Crackdown WAS a shit ton of fun. Hmm.
They actually posted an interview in a magazine just last month where one of the devs (maybe this guy) was talking about how the testers were running co-op and one player had jacked a helicopter and the second did a backflip off a building, landed on the wing, and began hurling missiles by hand. And now I can't do that!?
Just seems like, with this game, destruction is the key element, and I don't know how allowing to people to destroy at once could be considered "tacked on".
I'm bummed. There I said it. Thanks for pissing in my cornflakes, Jim Sterling, if that IS your real name.
Also, TYPIN FROM MA WII.
Also, TYPIN FROM MA WII.
The only multiplayer games I spend any time with are Team Fortress 2 and Counterstrike anyway...the rest take too much time to learn and get mildly decent at.
Newsflash to the under 20 crowd: Despite what you might think, not every game needs multiplayer.
I remember back in the day when a rock-solid single player experience was expected...
This game looks like it has some potential and I would like a chance for that potential to be realized.
I love people who petition for worse games. Like a happy slave :)
