Prototype 'expected' to outsell inFAMOUS by 90 percent photo

Electronic Entertainment Design and Research has weighed in on the Prototype versus inFAMOUS debate with numbers. According to EEDAR estimates, Prototype is set to outsell inFAMOUS by a dazzling 90 percent when combining the sales of the multiplatform releases of Prototype. However, inFAMOUS is expected to sell between at least 35 to 50 percent more on the PlayStation 3 than Activision’s title.

As noted in the blurb we received about the sales estimates, these numbers carry some meaning with publishers. Nobody was hurt by the exclusive release of inFAMOUS, but the potential of making more money by spreading the console love is obviously present. I asked EEDAR's director of analyst services Jesse Divinich if money given for exclusivity would balance the numbers in some way. He said it wouldn't.

"SCEA published inFAMOUS, so I would venture to guess they paid nothing for exclusivity. Sucker Punch, the developers, have only done PlayStation 2 and 3 titles," he told me via e-mail. "They are most known for the Sly Cooper series. I am sure Sucker Punch receives a lot of financial incentives to stay exclusive to Sony, which likely takes the form of higher royalty percentage points on gross sales."

"Sony is not in the financial position to pay for exclusive releases at the moment," he added "which limits exclusive releases to first-party published titles. They openly admit that they won’t pay for exclusive DLC."

Things may be different with the recently announced and unknown PlayStation-3 exclusive The Agent. Divinich reckons Sony is providing something.

"The Agent, a Rockstar title, is a PS3 exclusive and I do imagine Sony is providing some support on the backend, whether that is financial support or technological support is unknown to the public. However, Rockstar is a very intrepid developer; they would do a PS3 exclusive and make it profitable just for the challenge."

While these estimates tickle the brain, we’re more interested in knowing the answer to the million-dollar question: who would win in a fight to the death, Cole MacGrath or Alex Mercer? Divinich answered.

"In an environment without chain linked fences or strewed about gardening hoses? Cole all the way."

I haven't played Prototype, but I have to say, I didn't see what the big deal about inFamous was.

It doesn't take a genius to figure that out, just look at the sales chart. The PC and 360 version of Prototype tops Infamous with the PS3 version lagging behind Infamous.

The big deal over inFAMOUS is that the developpers are awesome enough to

1) Watch Zero Punctuation

2) Draw THAT!

That's a shame. I sincerely hope this does not keep Sucker Punch from doing a follow up. I don't want this to be an Advent Rising situation where there's promise that isn't fulfilled.

Of course, Advent Rising sucked, so there's a bit of difference here.

As you said those numbers may have little sway with Sucker Punch, but they must speak volumes to other developers/publishers. Their games will go where the money is.

It'll be interesting to see if the numbers actually bear this out. Wasn't particularly impressed with Prototype, but it's got mass appeal in spades.

It just goes to show, folks: put less time into a product, rush it with sloppy controls and visuals, and you'll outsell a carefully made one because of "tentacle arms" (I had more fun with Prototype, but it was sloppy).

poor infamous, always getting compared to prototype.

i'm curious to play prototype though. i really enjoyed infamous, going through a evil playthrough now and sticking grenades to random civilians, most amusing!

inFAMOUS is still going to sell well for a PS3 exclusive, that didn't get any hype until a month before release. I did prefer Prototype for some bizarre reason though, maybe it was the gliding, that was so much fun.

Well, Prototype is more fun, and is present in more plataforms so that's kinda obvious.

Well, that's surprising. I'd have expected that even only considering PS3 & 360 sales would show Prototype netting at least 100% more sales.

The 90% looks good on paper but when you consider that more people have 360s (and of course the PC sales will also contribute), Prototype is lagging behind inFamous somewhat.

Hopefully Activision will learn something from this rather than putting a positive spin on it!

I bought infamous in the first week- it is a good game, it seems to me that it is unfair that people are dogging it because either they are comparing it to prototype instead of letting it stand on it's own or dogging it because (and there are a ton of them) they are MS fanboys and MS fanboys dog every PS exclusive. I almost bought prototype the other day but instead opted for a close out copy of endwar for 15 bucks that included a BT headset (can't beat that) to occupy me.
kauza's Avatar
kauza at 07/13/2009 10:55
I bought both, so I guess I'm both part of the problem and the solution. Not going to lie: I did end up enjoying Infamous more, and I just hope that, independent of its comparisons to the sales of Prototype, it ends up selling well enough.

I'm actually inclined to agree on the fight outcome. I own InFamous on my PS3, and Prototype for my PC, and, gotta tell ya, the limited amount of interaction that Alex has with electricity....tells me he has a really bad weakness to it.

Beyond that...lol, so big surprise...a game being launched on PC, PS3, and 360, may, in fact, outsell a PS3 exclusive, that's a brand new IP??? you don't say. LoL, stop the presses.

talk about beating a dead horse, good lord. You did the piss poor biased review, the silly top 10 list. Yet here we are back with the Prototype better than Infamous thing. Even though countless podcasts and reviews put you by yourself on the issue. Now here we have a story saying that hey guess what, a game released on three platforms sold more than a game released on one. That game that sold more must be really good huh? All because one character can't jump over a chain fence.

played them both. like inFAMOUS more than [Prototype]. inFAMOUS has more heart, production, and it's an awesome origin story (let's be honest, that's what it is). I gave up on [Prototype] around the time Alex uttered "I'm gonna find who did this to me, and I'm going to make 'em pay", really? Really? After starting the game with amnesia, you are going to let him say some of the most lame, cliche statements in gaming history. Jeebus Christ!

So if Prototype is outselling inFamous by 90%, yet if inFamous is outselling Prototype by 30-50% on the PS3, then doesn't that mean that the 360 version of Prototype is dominating by an extremely large margin?

@ VaeVictus - You know, I'd be inclined to agree with you. The storyline in InFamous is better, the good/bad aspect was also quite interesting. Not to say that Prototype wasn't great fun (Just finished collecting all 131 web of intrigues last night), but I personally enjoyed InFamous more.

It's too bad only one side (PS3 owners) can actually be the better judges on this article (I have BOTH). 360 owners cannot accurately comment because they don't get to play the better game (Infamous). Infamous is MUCH, MUCH deeper, and better gaming experience. Both have their repetitive issues, but Prototype just got to be TOO repetitive and flat out boring. After you use it's "over the top" powers, it gets dull fast. Infamous is way more engrossing, you feel like the character. You'll WANT to play it again after you complete it. Just because Prototype will out sell Infamous (it BETTER with PS3 AND 360 owners buying it), doesn't make it a "better" game. The Chevy Cavalier will out sell the Chevy Corvette every year...is the Cavalier a better car?

Isnt this kind of a weak excuse for a post Brad? I like some of your other stuff guy, but its pretty obvious that a multiplatform title will outsell a title exclusive to a console by 90%+. I dont see how that is relevant in anyway to the debate.

So they're saying inFamous outsold Prototype by an average of 5% per platform while being exclusive to the smaller install base of PS3? That's a pretty bad beating if you ask me.

I'm not sure I'd pay much attention to these EEDAR folks. After all they seem to be the ones who said that inFamous and Prototype have "near identical game play and quality scores." Which is half-right at best, if you would judge an 78-80 and 84 (current Metacritic scores for Prototype [3 platforms] and inFamous, respectively) as "near identical." I could see that judgment going either way depending on the person.
