I was wrong, but it was nonetheless great.
Also, it does highlight how fucking terrible the game looks. Ugh.
Well, I have good news for you, my simple minded friend, Prototype and inFAMOUS are in the SAME GENRE! SANDBOX HERO GAMES!
So what's your next argument?
Console bias? Please, shower me with your cohesive and well thought out arguments.
OH WAIT
I wouldn't call an average of 8.5 v. 8.0 "much better reviews."
@Psy-Phi
If reviewers are supposed to be entirely objective, did you go and troll Giant Bomb or AceGamez for giving inFAMOUS perfect scores? Or do you only get upset when someone doesn't like a game you cherish, particularly a PS3 exclusive? Perhaps you think that, objectively, inFAMOUS is a flawless game.
Reviews are opinions, they will never be entirely objective and that's why people have favorite reviewers and websites. If you don't like Dtoid reviews, try one of the hundreds of other sites. I don't always agree with the reviews either, but I sure don't see the point in complaining about it.
The story is awful, the characters are horrid, and there's not much to do once you get bored of running around for a bit.
Whipfist is easily more cool and better than the Blade power, imo.
Oh dear god... it was just a dream. *reads ikiryou's post* NOOOOOO!
Do I get a mega buster?
What, exactly, was epic fail? Stating facts? It's not like I'm the one trolling.

As for the review: loved the video. Reminds me of Anthony's Saints Row 2 video review, which doesn't seem to be online anymore. Bring it back!
Right now I'm at the point where you're in Times Square protecting the Bloodtox Pump, I get to the point where the two Hydras pop up on either side and you have to deal with the two big Hunters (can't remember what they're called). They keep fucking kicking my ass, and I can't get my lock-on to help me nab a helicopter. But I haven't tried using any devastators, but I don't know if it will destroy the thing I'm trying to protect.
Let's make a meme out of this.
Wow, I'm really angry about that. I guess I just absolutely can't stand that fake raspy voice. It ruined both new Batman movies for me. And Cole's voice isn't nearly as bad. I just have tons of pent up rage about that.
In conclusion, fuck Christan Bale to hell.
You're quite the simple minded person aren't you? The genre means little. How would you rate a game objectively? Most places go by graphics/presentation, control, sound, gameplay, story, re-playability/lasting appeal. Gameplay is the only portion that is subjective to a degree. But even that can be looked at objectively (which 2 out of 3 did not do).
I was trying to use different genre to show something without going into a comparison of Prototype vs something else. My beef is not with the scores but how they seem to have come to conclusion of the scores.
Clearly they didn't think this game controlled well, and targeting was frowned upon. The graphics were also spoken of in a very limited capacity (not even mentioned by two of them) no mention of sound quality, it's pretty much all about the fun they had playing it. Again that's fine, but you need MORE in a review than just the opinion of how it played and the structure of the gameplay itself.
God forbid anybody whom may have an opinion which may differ from any member of the destructoid crew, they get pounced on!
Because it's FUN.
Not because it's so pretty, or sounds so amazing, or anything of the other things you mentioned.
Sure, if those things come together in a manner that doesn't suck hard nuts, then you should probably give that props.
Do you still play pac-man? How about tetris? Notice how the graphics and sound are atrocious? Notice how you're still having fun?
Idiot.
I only read reviews at places I like. Never heard of those two places. And giving inFAMOUS a perfect score is more laughable than giving it a 6.0. At least the 6.0 acknowledges that it has problems that can't be looked passed. If I read those places I would complain too, believe me.
I disagree. I don't care what the game scores in sound or graphics, etc. There is one big question: Is the game fun (or otherwise enjoyable) to play?
You can put me in front of a game with great graphics, the best video game score ever composed, enough content to play for 300 hours, and razor-sharp control, but if I'm not enjoying the play experience, I don't care that it scores a "10" in over half of your objective categories. Even the sites that consider these categories clearly state that their final score is not an average and you know why? Because averaging a bunch of objective categories doesn't make a bit of sense when evaluating a game. Instead, these sites "fudge the numbers" to get the final score. In other words, they subjectively consider the merits of the game.
If Pac-Man were released today for the first time, it would probably score somewhere in the range of 6. Because of it's time, we give games like that a pass. Look at iPhone games and how they're looked at and reviewed for proof of this. If it's released in today's era of hardware, we expect a certain quality of visual, aural, and control.
it does matter. You can also look at Rev's current rant about giving games a pass because they're indie.
People are attacking each other for shit that wasn't nearly offensive.
Random explosions, military moving in...
THIS THREAD HAS BECOME PROTOTYPE! OMG!
Lots of haters though. If you already have your own opinion about a game, then these reviews are useless to you except for mindless entertainment, and it doesn't matter if you disagree! You make it out like they intentionally write these reviews to piss you off. Which makes you a pompous, pretentious, self-important jackass.
EspadaAndy2 is successful troll though. The guy/girl/thing doesn't have real opinions or anything remotely interesting to say. It just tries to find something to say that will bug us as much as possible.
[/mythoughts]
Why shouldn't they be met with the same level of acceptance? You've got your film reviewers who are biased against action movies or comedies, you have those who are pro certain styles or directors, and make no attempt to either hide their biases in their reviews or declare them when they're called on them. Some have been revealed to have been openly paid off, and others have been revealed to have been entirely fabricated. I'm not exactly seeing the pedestal those guys are standing on.
Along with Andy, why did you even register to constantly post comments about a website you hate?
@Lemon
Best comment reply ever. I guess every single long term member is a "bitch" then, because all of us are loving the video review, and cementing the fact that "opinion is opinion".
What I want to know, and maybe it's in the inFamous review that I probably won't waste my time reading at this point, but did either Jim or Anthony actually play inFamous? Did they play through the whole thing, both Hero and Infamous? Did they realize that it's actually two separate stories played out in the same world with the illusion of choice between good and evil? And most importantly, do both of those guys REALLY suck at video games?
From all the bitching on Podtoid that's the only conclusion I can come to since inFamous isn't very hard at all and if anyone found themselves jumping to the wrong place even close to 1% of the time they had to have been doing something wrong. Except when dropping down with circle on fire escapes. I had to do that maybe three times in my two playthroughs, so it's not a big deal, but that shit is nearly broken if you need to stand ON the fire escape instead of the railing around it.
The only rational conclusion I can draw from this whole thing is that the Dtoid staff was looking to boost clicks by posting outrageous and insane flamebait, and maybe they're a little stupid for thinking inFamous and Prototype have more than minor details in common.
Doesn't hurt that Jim doesn't like to finish games and Anthony will go into a game with a glaringly flawed preconception of what it should be (PixelJunk Eden), play it for five minutes, and then write it off for not being what he expected.
It's the unprofessional methodology, proven out by the result, that's troubling. Not that anyone has terrible taste or no skill at easy games.
I actually agree with this. There are bad movies and bad games that I know are pretty crappy but I enjoyed them. The opposite is also true. Just because you don't like a game or movie or whatever that doesn't necessarily mean you have to give it a bad review. The reason is that every person has certain things that they really like or dislike that is particular to them but that don't necessarily apply to the larger audience. For example I may really like Penguins that fart loudly and any game that has that repeatedly in it is a winner for me. But if the rest of the game is complete crap and that is the only redeeming quality I can still say I like the game whilst giving it a bad score.
I didn't pounce on anyone. I merely pointed out facts:
That the Destructoid scores were only 1 point apart;
The the "much better" scores on other sites averaged out to a mere half point difference; and
That all reviews are inherently subjective.
While I disagree with Psy-Phi's opinions, I think that he has responded to my comments constructively. Additionally, I disagree with the Destructoid Crew all of the time and have no problem with differing opinions. The only thing that bugs me is when people come to a website and say the reviewers are "wrong" and try to back up their subjective opinions with "fact." Let's face it, these are game reviews and people are going to have differing opinions regarding what games they enjoy. There should not be any hostility because it's literally impossible to be wrong.
To be honest, I can't say anything substantive about either game because I haven't played them. However, I can correct misstatements of fact made in the comments as well as express my own opinion as to how game reviews should be conducted and why people shouldn't get so worked up over them.
Please continue to voice your opinions, especially if they break from the status quo. It makes it much easier for me to find the drooling idiots in the comments whom I will ignore.
Thank you.
I agree with you on the idea of playing a game with perfect 10's in all but gameplay not being a good experience. And I believe I was probably a bit too vehement in my say of being objectives vs subjective, because you're right, they do skip out on averages weighing gameplay/control in the heaviest. Reviews are about opinion, but in addition to that opinion they're also about the objective parts.
There's a place for purely subjective reviews too (which I believe Dtoid does). I just think that with Prototype specifically, the detraction of the control (a huge element in enjoying a game for me) and the visual and audio portions of the game make it a less enjoyable experience. And I would like to see that reflected in the scores here. Given what they gave a similar game, I expected to see Prototype scored extremely similarly. One of the reviewers did this.
Anywho, I am only complaining because I care. If it was a site I didn't care about, you wouldn't see me posting.
Both games have their pluses and minuses. Play them yourself. Find out which one you like. Easy as that, folks.
...
ummmmmm
Thank you and keep up the great work D-Toid.
I really appreciate you discussing this rationally. I would agree that Destructoid review scores are quite subjective, but often times you can get the objective information you desire from within the text of the article. Personally, I like the way it's done, as I like the score to reflect the reviewer's overall perception of the game's enjoyability.
That said, the Destructoid review system works much better when there are multiple reviewers. This review is a perfect example: At least one of the three separate opinions is likely to square up with your feelings about the game. If not, there is enough different information in the opinions that you can kind of carve out your own opinion on the game. After all, if you've already played the game, no review score will affect what you think; however, if you're just trying to figure out if a game is worth trying, the reviews provide enough substantive information to make up your own mind. Again, I can see how some people might not like this system, but it's ridiculous to say it's flat out wrong.
