OK, good news/bad news time. The bad news is, Hamza is busy working it at PAX so there is no one around to properly promote this cblog. Only he (and other Dtoid staff that aren't me) have the power to put a cblog on the front page, so sorry for not being perfect. The good news is, Mr Destructoid himself has given me the go ahead to promote this blog about Suda51 (Flower, Sun and Rain, No More Heroes) and his way with crafting a character. That means you also get the privilege of viewing a custom photoshop job created by none other than yours truly. Amazing, isn't it? You'd have to be a real pro to detect that the header was altered in any way.

So yeah, check out Canti-sama's cblog about the post-modern videogame, and discuss. Suda's games are often more fun to talk about than they are to play, and really, have you got anything better to do?

I admit, I loved that No More Heroes is the only video game I truely consider art through and through, but it is a heck of a lot of fun to talk about, and can be painful to play through.

Fuck me. I have read and said some stupid things online, here at Destructoid and elsewhere, but shit, that is surely the stupidest sentence I have ever encountered anywhere.

Come now, you have to admit that artistically speaking, most video games are absolute garbage. Taking a mediocre story and slapping it onto a mediocre game does not magically make "art;" it only makes mediocrity. No More Heroes is a parody of video games - I feel that is one of the few forms of art the medium is properly designed to make.

Nope. There are plenty of videogames I consider to be art. Here are five: [/i]Deus Ex, Super Mario Bros., Tetris, Gears of War, Advance Wars[/i].

I suspect disagreement here comes from how we are using the word art, i'm not really willing to speculate fully how it is you are defining art as it that will only lead to further confusion but I will elaborate on my problem with your initial statement.

You basically said - in line with the c-blog - that you consider the videogame No More Heroes to be art but that it isn't that great a game (I assume this is what you meant by "painful to play through"). Not only that you see it as the only game that you truly consider art. I find that absurd. You are shitting all over the legacy of legendary videogame artists like Miyamoto, Spector, Molyneux, Suzuki, Minter, Kojima et al. These people who have created and directed wonderful games are not artists yet Suda 51 is?

Taking a mediocre story and slapping it onto a mediocre game does not magically make "art;" it only makes mediocrity

I agree with that unreservedly.

No More Heroes is a parody of video games - I feel that is one of the few forms of art the medium is properly designed to make.

It looks like you are trying to define the artistry of videogames in terms of other mediums.Desert Bus from Penn and Teller's Smoke and Mirrors is a parody, a better parody than No More Heroes. It is not videogame art. No More Heroes is just a mediocre game with some nice jokes. It is not videogame art.

I wouldn't play any of those other games if they weren't fun. I played No More Heroes even when it wasn't fun. There are simply no other games that I was willing to play for a reason other than they were fun. Other than Deus Ex (which I never played), there is no doubt that the other games you mentioned are games, through and through. Where as No More Heroes is a parody of games - it's pretty much the only title that in a sense transends being a game to being a commentary.

Would you prefer I revise my statement? I could say, more accurately, No More Heroes is the only game that's more art than game worth playing. It makes no difference to me.

The term art is so damn vague that it's pretty much worthless to use outside of the compliment realm. If people here are talking about visual art, called it that, or anything in that nature.

Visual aesthetics and gameplay are VERY differente things.

The thing is, No More Heroes is fun, even while it's being frustrating. The stupid jobs and the need to grind for money are both fun and un-fun at the same time. That's a pretty special feeling. I don't think there is a even word for it in English.
