Also, zombie Orwell is blatantly better than zombie Hemingway.
I wish every survival-based games took a cue from Minecraft. Hell, tons of games can benefit from its self-sufficient design. Just imagine the new Rambo game if it lets you scavenge and create a safe house in the woods, then search for materials to cover the place in traps. Then combine it with MGS3 infiltration and stealth take downs, and modern firefights for when shit goes down.
That's what I'm talking about. That's entertaining, educative and most of all it feels fair.
Great blog Seph, let's frontpage it!
Also, there is nothing scarier than running out of torches and weapons when you're waaaay below the surface.
I have to agree, but the way I see it there's been a lot more fapping lately, and for that I like, if we could keep Cblog promotions more active it would probably help others realize there is a blog part of Dtoid and that people do write good stuff there.
For at the present all we really have is a tiny top bar tap and a tiny sidebar tap for us.
1) loading times. Yes, they're pretty bad in DayZ, but it's really not a big deal and feels like a worthless point.
2) MacGyver. All this shows is that you are bad at DayZ and that surviving in Minecraft is EASY. Surviving in Minecraft poses NO challenge. It's simple not comparable. Yes, you die a lot in DayZ, but if you watch people who are good at the game, you'll see it's not "pure luck". There WILL be snipers who will kill you, but you know what you do? You LOOK for them. You anticipate them. And if necessary, you flank them, or go somewhere else. Yes, it takes skill and perhaps a bit of luck, but it's definitely better than it being pathetically easy.
3) Zombies not giving up. You're doing it wrong. It's easy to lose zombies in DayZ. All you do is go through some bushes then prone, or go around some corners then prone, or go through a building. And also, the fact it takes a while to get set up in DayZ is part of what makes it so tense.
4) THIS is what makes DayZ more scary. The zombies are scary at night maybe, but the constant risk of getting sniped or shot is what makes the game truly tense and terrifying. That being said, there are precautions you can take to avoid this, which I doubt you did take - never stay still too long in the open, always crouch, be quiet, don't go on roofs often etcetera.
5) Controls. Again, I disagree. The inventory is like that for reason - so that getting things out of your backpack is actually a big deal. So that you have a reason to carefully consider what goes in your main inventory and what goes in your rucksack. You clearly just didn't take the time to learn DayZ's admittedly complex controls.
6) This point is silly because DayZ is already hard enough - if you want a challenge you can go try and raid a bandit camp or something. DayZ doesn't NEED to add other zones - there are already tonnes of possibilities for player interactions on the one map.
Overall, it just really sounds like you didn't put in the hours necessary to enjoy DayZ. Did you even get a vehicle? Did you feel the abject terror of collecting a vehicle, setting up a base and then hiding as a team of snipers and infantry invade your building and kill your friends?
I really doubt you did. DayZ is a hard game, but it has a lot of rewards. Minecraft is a very good and innovative game, but they're simply not comparable in my opinion. The survival part of Minecraft is far easier, and more of the game is focused on gathering resources to then build sweet things.
If you think DayZ is about the zombies, you're looking at it wrong. They're simply a tool there to create interesting player-to-player interactions.
I've played both games and I've NEVER thought of Minecraft and DayZ having the "same concept". I just think this is a really weird comparison to make, perhaps simply to generate controversy.
It's called "Survival Mode" but it's not really about survival. Survival is easy in Minecraft. Most of the fun comes from building all your different things with materials you harvested and creating a nice place. The actual "Survival" part is really shallow in comparison to DayZ's.
Still, your points do make a lot of sense. Minecraft does seem like a far better zombie game. I've yet to try either, but I don't know how long I can last with such great descriptions like this.
I thought this post was sarcasm at first but a lot of the comments seem to be taking it seriously, I'm not sure what to make of it.
The main draw of Minecraft has always been survival in my case. It's just a different kind of survival, strategic on a grander scale than Day Z's more moment-to-moment stuff.
(people take things wayyyyyyyyyy to serious it seems from the comments)
Also why does Minecraft have to laugh at a game? Don't they both fit under that niche category of "games publishers would have never funded." I know you are saying people are taking this too seriously, but you are kind of make bold statements.
Day Z laughs in Minecraft's "stupid face" in quite a few ways too.
Ignorance overload... DOES NOT COMPUTE!!!
God damn promoted blogs tricking me into reading front page comments... fuck you, Dixon. When I snap and go to the mall and start mowing down teenagers with stupid haircuts and ironic shirts, it's going to be your fault...
Awesome blog, glad its front page.
