Project Rygar to be a Wii exclusive photo

Announced during Tecmo's recent "Nite Out" press event, Project Rygar is set to hit the stage as a Wii exclusive. Sadly, not much was released at this time, other than some character and concept art. From IGN:

Based on the classic NES/Arcade game (which also made a glorious stop on PS2), this game starts the franchise anew with new characters and settings. Kikuchi wants to make a game that people can easily get into through the Wiimote, and the Wiimote will be your main control device for Rygar's Diskarmor. He hopes to be able to show more of Rygar some time this year.

This just might be the type of good news that the Wii has been waiting for. While Square-Enix is the primary reason the press is in Japan this weekend, it's obvious that Tecmo is ready to tease us with potential "hits in the making" of their own.

Whether or not the game will deliver the goods is anybody's guess. Nonetheless, the thought of using the Wiimote to control the Diskarmor certainly sounds appealing.

Nice.

Good to hear of a game that isn't porting controls for the Wii. I may pick this one up on that basis alone.

This is the kind of thing the Wii needs. Will it deliver?

Dittos. Hey, it's all the Wii fanboys (and Canadian)! I wonder when Aex or Azriel will show up to tell us that this game 5ux0rz.

BTW, Paco, have you ever played the drinking game that goes with the original batman movie?

TheStripe: I have not, please fill me on how this is done?

(it better use only the old 60's batman series! and not the new flicks where you drink every time mr freeze says something that is a metaphor for being cold... damn the new movies sucked... sorry for the mini-rant)

-> Paco: I believe he means the (awesome) 60's batman film(what your avatar's from), but the tim burton batmans were pretty awesome, and begins was very surprisingly solid.

-> Stripe: "Fanboy" is inappropriately used on this occasion, and one that is used far, far too frequently. I'm no more a wii fanboy than I am a DS fanboy, a PC fanboy, or a ps2 fanboy(love the console, hate sony like poison). Fanboys posses blind loyalty to a fault, claim all faults levelled against their system of choice are completely wrong, and all the other systems suck dick. I don't think any wii fans here to which those criteria apply survived the great summa purges. For me personally, I just post defending the wii because I have a project that needs doing and exams coming up, and I'm a chronic procrastinator. Just try to use a less obnoxious word, is my point.

@perri:

Rygar's been around since at LEAST the NES era, though I think it was an arcade title first. It started life as a side-scroller where you ran around bonking things with a shield on a chain. This was later named the "Diskarmor." There was a 3d PS2 version released a few years back that was sort of a reboot for the series. The story and graphics for the PS2 version set it in Greece... which is sort of unfortunate, as it's hard to avoid unfair comparisons to God of War. To be fair though, the newer version came out years before the first GoW did. It's a fun game, deeper than it seems at first. Definitely worth a rental at least.

Awesome Qalamari, sounds like a solid game, definitly going to try to get my hands on some version, thought the thought of any title built from the ground up on wii is enough to excite me.

RYGAR FTW! Rygar on NES = love.

Though the PS2 one really wasn't bad, I just had too many other games I'd rather be playing at the time. :)

I also really dig the character design. We will ultimately get the God of War comparisons whether they are warranted or not, but I'd have to say this guy is at least cooler looking than Kratos.

So...how about a free copy of the original game on the disc? Or do we have to wait for the inevitable VC version and pay extra for what would be a freebie 5 years ago?

This is what Wii needs. Some action games. Mini games are fun, but there's nothing like wading into a horde of enemies with a razer sharp shield on a chain.

Also, please be difficult. In the good sense, not in the "can't get anywhere because the camera, AI and controls are broken" sense.

I want some meat on my Wii games.

@Paco - Just watch the original batman movie (the one with the bat shark repellent) and have a drink every time they say bat-something. If Robin says "Holy . . . . . Batman!" finish what you're holding.

@Brad - I'm taking fanboy back. According to some of the haters on this board, I can't be "hardcore" unless I'm a videophile, so I'm proud to be a fanboy. While I try to have valid arguments and not hate indiscriminatly, I'm tired of haters. If they want to call me a fanboy for defending the Wii, fine, I'm a fanboy.

Loved the NES game. My friends and I could never beat the green lion emperor thing though. The PS2 game was really good, it was pretty much how the PS2 Castlevainia games should have played.

I hope they do better than the PS2 game. The cinematics, for one, looked terrible (at least the ones I saw) and sound awful too.
