Yesterday we were all freaking out over the announcement of Project Needlemouse, a codenamed game that promised to be a brand new 2D Sonic the Hedgehog due for release in 2010. Don't worry, the game itself and the trailer we posted is genuine. However, a Project Needlemouse site featuring Green Hill-esque artwork has been confirmed as false.
A few people were excited for the artwork, as it looked like an old school Sonic level design given an HD coat of paint. Unfortunately for those people, the art was created by a mystery person who has no affiliation with Sega whatsoever. Whatever those concepts are, they aren't going to be in the new Sonic game.
"That site is not connected to our Project Needlemouse," states Sega of America's Kellie Parker.
Even though the site is fake, I hope Sega at least takes notice of the colors and design and remembers what old Sonic games used to look like. Let's not have this new game look like a bad anime or a cyberpunk fairground ride. If Sega's serious about bringing Sonic back to his roots, some good old fashioned level design would be wonderful.

Destructoid is an open discussion community. You don't need to "audition" to post a comment - just speak your mind. We respect differing opinions on the site, so have at it. Be smart, funny, insightful, clueless, or cute -- but back it up with substance. Keep your cool, keep it fun. We only ask that you act respectfully and above all: don't be a troll and ruin it for everyone else. Don't bring down gamers or we'll, you know, gently shoot you in the face and stuff you into a flaming mailbox. Each comment is your opportuntity to make this community awesomer. Is that even a word?
Avoiding the banhammer only requires common sense: spamming, trolling, racism, NSFW stuff, and other forms of sucking will not be tolerated. If anyone is griefing please report abuse. Be good. Don't suck!
My point is...............well, I don't really have one.
I still don't get why the artist decided to distort the hell out of the bottom of the platforms. It just looks awkward. But nevertheless, many cookies to them for putting their "HEY! I WANT AN HD GREEN HILL" message out there.
As long as the terrain looks as detailed and involved as it did in the 3rd game, but in HD, then I think I'll be incredibly happy! The fact that they're making a 2D Sonic at all makes me happy.
Just kidding, says the internet.
Your heart breaks, just like with shadow the hedgehog...
i hope the true sonic does return.
Good, now I am talking as if this game was completely revealed.
I'm not sure what your point was... but I thought I'd mention that BOTH Earthworm Jim and Bubsy DID make the transition to 3D... I don't think their 3D counterparts were any good... but still... they made them... so... yeah...
Really how can anyone be surprised after what is like a decade of mostly failure from sonic... You see, this is exactly where high hopes get you. You perk up at the thoughts of a return to the old sonic game sand then you get kicked in the teeth.
Loose your faith, and assume it will be shit... in the end, you'll be a lot happier as you will hbe unhurt by all the shit sonic games
Sega, here's a ProTip for your asses: the guy who made those assets has ::gasp!:: the right idea. Go with that approach.
Actually at this point i'd say the only ones you could ever blame is yourselves... you wouldn';t get "disappointed" if you did not raise your hopes in the first place; and with sonic teams track record, having hope in a sonic title is rather foolish... hell i think we even had a destructoid article that pointed out that confirmed that sonic team was nothing but a bunch of hacks put together to fart out sonic games; as oppose to a competent team meant to revive the brand
I was actually telling people not to get their hopes up yesterday, and was feeling just a bit validated by this news. Although I admit I didn't make that entirely clear.
