MonsterBag

04-22-2015

Animaniacs was all trios and duos (and one solo sexy rat thing) playing off each other for comedy and I couldn't help but think of the Buttons and Mindy skits while playing MonsterBag. Mindy would toddle off into harm's way, ...

Flame Over

03-11-2015

Roguelikes suck. They don't suck as in they are horrible to play. They suck for me because they're so damn hard. But in this genre, that's part of the challenge. For whatever reason, our gamer brains desire to overcome the im...

Criminal Girls: Invite Only

03-07-2015

We all know the PlayStation Vita is now the de facto home for all things Japanese. Ports, remakes, re-releases, and original content all trickle down similarly to the little handheld that could, and the Vita port of 2010's PS...

Oreshika: Tainted Bloodlines

03-03-2015

Like many games of its type, Oreshika: Tainted Bloodlines features a tiny graphic in its text boxes to remind players they can press a button to advance to the next line. Usually the graphic is of an X or O button pressi...

htoL#NiQ: The Firefly Diary

02-22-2015

No, that isn't an encoding error up there in the headline: "htoL#NiQ" is indeed this PS Vita game's title, and is essentially a very stylish way to type "The Firefly Diary" in Japanese. Whatever personal peculiarities led the...

Nihilumbra

01-30-2015

There's a nugget of a solid game here in Nihilumbra. Unlike many of the PlayStation Vita's offerings, it uses the touchscreen in a novel way that doesn't feel tacked on or forced. And the puzzle-platforming is supported well by an ethereal art style, score, and sound design. You just have to wade through a jumble of pseudo-philosophy to get to it.

Grim Fandango

01-26-2015

Is it because you know the game? Or is it because you saw a skeleton on the cover? Either way it's all the same, because this is another Hot Take! Today, we're grabbing our scythes and diving into the wacky world of Grim Fan...

Duke Nukem 3D: Megaton Edition

01-07-2015

When I was younger, Duke Nukem 3D had a "parental lock" option with a passcode. Naturally, as any inquisitive child would do, I backed up my save files, uninstalled the game, re-installed it, and set up a new jibber...

Hatsune Miku: Project DIVA F 2nd

11-13-2014

Hatsune Miku is an international sensation. Despite the fact that she's a simple digital creation, she's managed to rack up a massive amount of record sales and sold-out concerts, including a tour with Lady Gaga and even an a...

Senran Kagura Bon Appetit

11-12-2014

Some may call Senran Kagura inherently tasteless, but the series of action-packed brawlers has depth and satisfying combat. The games have swept the handheld community mainly because of their increasingly risqué conten...

Tales of Hearts R

11-11-2014

The Tales series may not have the same cachet in the West as do other prominent role-playing game franchises, but its renown is definitely on the rise. Bandai Namco has expressed more confidence in the franchise in recent yea...

Freedom Wars

11-04-2014

Last week Japan had a special Freedom Wars related event. During the convention-like affair, Sony had an announcement for fans -- a new Propaganda Idol project is underway. Based on the fictional idols within the confine...

Mind Zero

10-24-2014

At a glance, it's easy to look at Mind Zero and compare it to the Persona series given its art style and the narrative advertised within early trailers and promotional materials. And you wouldn't be incorrect in declaring tha...

Senran Kagura: Shinovi Versus

10-14-2014

In the world of Senran Kagura, excess is the rule. The outfits are skimpy, the plot threads are ludicrous, and the breasts are laughably large, so huge in fact that you wonder how the skimpy bras the girls are eventually stri...

Danganronpa 2: Goodbye Despair

09-28-2014

From the beginning, this murder (and I've seen a lot of them over the course of my career) struck me as too simple. Kyle Hebert -- a voice actor you may recognize as the voice of Ryu from Street Fighter -- was found de...

Hyperdimension Neptunia: Producing Perfection

08-30-2014

The Hyperdimension Neptunia series is a polarizing one. Some find Compile Heart’s thinly-veiled parodies of the game industry engaging and painfully adorable, and flock to it for an abundance of fanservice. Others run f...

CounterSpy

08-20-2014

CounterSpy's stylized Cold War re-imagining is on point. It looks good, with its spindly spy running, rolling, and leaping like a jumping spider. It sounds good, with its jazzy soundtrack that reminds of James Bond.  Unfortunately, the rest of it feels half-baked.

Sword Art Online: Hollow Fragment

08-19-2014

Despite how you may feel about the polarizing second arc of Sword Art Online, fans generally have nothing but good things to say about the first arc. It managed to nail a lot of aspects of MMO culture, along with marrying the...

Monster Monpiece

07-06-2014

Too often, unique and engaging games are passed over due to their risqué content and gimmickry, and Monster Monpiece is inevitably one that will fall victim to this curse. It's not difficult to see why some may be turn...

PlayStation Vita Pets

06-27-2014

Of the many digital venues I'd expect to see a virtual pet simulator, the PlayStation Vita was certainly not one. PlayStation Vita Pets is an interesting diversion, not only because of the bizarre system it released on, but t...

Magical Beat

06-20-2014

No matter what the climate is in the industry, there seems to be an overwhelming demand for battle puzzle games. That's ok with me though, because ever since playing Yoshi, Dr. Mario, and Wario's Woods for the NES, ...

Demon Gaze

05-12-2014

I'm a dungeon crawler at heart, so any game that throws me into the pits and makes me claw my way out is a good time on at least some level. Difficulty? Unforgiving systems? Bring it on. For me, just about any grind is an enjoyable grind. But even as a diehard genre fan, PS Vita dungeon crawler Demon Gaze tried my patience and resolve.

Destiny of Spirits

04-30-2014

Sony's gotta-catch-'em-all Vita card game Destiny of Spirits will be shut down June 30. Apparently the "over one million downloads" were not enough to sustain the free-to-play Vita title and so Sony will be "ending service." ...
