Final Fantasy XIII

The PC port of Square Enix's perennially controversial Final Fantasy XIII didn't get off to the best start. As far as console-to-PC ports go, it wasn’t the worst that I’ve come across, but it had a lot of room for improvement, with resolution locked to meager 720p and no graphical options to speak of; a dual language option which would have been better implemented as optional DLC to sidestep the mandatory 60 gigabytes of install space; and lastly, an abysmal frame rate that seems to randomly fluctuate anywhere from 30 fps to 60 fps, providing an unstable gameplay experience.

Square Enix announced last month that a patch was coming sometime in December that would attempt to rectify some of these issues. While there’s been no mention of a fix for the game’s unpredictable frame rate, the patch will allow users to select custom resolutions of at least 1080p and unspecified “graphic options” will be added to the game. The patch is set to coincide with the launch of the next title in the trilogy, Final Fantasy XIII-2, on December 11.
