Review: Dark Souls II: The Crown of the Sunken King

It's no Artorias, but it'll do
Jul 22

2014 has been very good to me, but Dark Souls II is one of my favorite games of the year. Many debates have raged on as to whether or not it's as exceptional as its predecessor (Demon's Souls is better than bot...

Here's what Dark Souls II would be like as an eSport

A glorious peek into a potential future for professional gaming competitions
Jul 05

A lot of us would find eSports far more alluring if the genres associated with these competitions were more diverse. We see plenty of first-person shooters, RTS, fighting games, and MOBAs. But what about something atypical l...

It's possible to beat Dark Souls II in 20 minutes

Here's Distortion2's 20:14 run
Jun 02

I haven't been keeping up with Dark Souls II speedruns. I should be. We got a tip in this weekend about Marksel's 21:25 world-record any% run, which has since been topped by Distortion2's 20:14 run, included above. Seems the...

Dark Souls II disappointed, but I'm so ready for the next game

Project Beast?
May 10

In the weeks leading up to E3, there have been some truly interesting leaks. Headlining that list is undoubtedly "Project Beast," rumored to be the working title for the next From Software game. The next (Demon's?) Souls. The...

What's your Dark Souls II covenant of choice?

Praise the sun
May 02

Dark Souls II has been out for a few weeks on consoles, enough time for fans to really dig in, and now PC players have shown up in style. I'm liking the game -- less so than its predecessors, overall -- but still: when I'm no...

PC Port Report: Dark Souls II

It's better than the original on PC but still isn't perfect
Apr 24

The appearance of the original Dark Souls on PC was welcome but it was... let's say troubled. Its innovative online mode was married to the much maligned Games for Windows Live service and the game was locked at a piddly 1024...

Boxed PC copies of Dark Souls II delayed in the UK

From April 25 to May 2
Apr 15

There was some confusion this morning about a possible delay for the PC version of Dark Souls II, which is already later than its console counterparts. Regrettably, there is a delay, to May 2 -- but only in the United Kingdom...

An early look at the PC version of Dark Souls II

I died...a lot
Apr 08

How many times have I died in Dark Souls II now? 12, 14... 16? Truth is I've already lost count of how many times I've taken a blade to the chest or an arrow to the face. Whenever I think I'm making progress, something takes ...

Dark Souls II has already claimed over 4 million lives

A family that dies together stays together
Mar 13

This Dark Souls II death counter makes me feel a little bit better about myself. Between the 360 and PS3 versions of the game (there's a drop down to switch between), over 4 million have already died. Billions of souls have b...

Sword and board all the way

Dark Souls II has its own 'Blighttown,' and it's terrible

And by terrible, I mean awesome
Mar 11

See that screenshot above? That's me, in Hollow form (read: after dying), "enjoying" The Gutter zone from Dark Souls II. In the shot, I've just taken respite on a spare platform (while poisoned), only to find that a giant dem...

The Dragonrider boss
Mar 11

This video comes from SuperNormalMode, who demonstrates just how easy it is to beat Dark Souls II's Dragonrider boss in under 15 seconds. I love how the dramatic music immediately stops.

Review: Dark Souls II

Prepare to die...roughly the same amount
Mar 10

My experience with the Souls series is one of my favorite memories of my entire gaming career. Playing Demon's Souls for the first time made me feel like a kid again, back when games didn't hold your hand and explai...

Odd music choice in the trailer can't dull my Dark Souls II hype

A bit of alright town
Mar 10

Dark Souls II trailers have been sort of weird. I suppose they're trying to not scare people away with the, "this is the hardest thing ever" shtick, opting to appear more accessible and hip. Don't care. One more day. Unless you're holing out for the PC version, bless your (dark) soul. That thing at 1:16.

Namco Bandai releases Dark Souls II PC requirements

Can you run it?

Part one of Dark Souls II's prologue released

Counting the hours

Should I have waited until the game comes out for consoles on Tuesday to watch this, part one of the Dark Souls II prologue? Probably. But what's done is done. If you're on the fence, there's talk of the usual subjects -- lo...

Dark Souls II set for April 25, 2014 on PC

More than a month after consoles
Mar 06

There was concern that the PC release of Dark Souls II would arrive long after the game hits Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 on March 11, 2014. While the PC date isn't as bad as some had feared, it's by no means right around the c...

Dark Souls II CE unboxing makes death look worth it

Just look at some of that stuff

This Dark Souls II trailer is something different

I think they wanted a less scary and less hopeless trailer
Feb 19

It's not a bad trailer, but I suppose it just feels tonally different than usual. The music sounds like something out of a gritty cop/crime movie, but the voice over does speak to series fans specifically, while broadly being a sort of halftime locker room pep talk. It's less bleak, I guess, instead focusing on the hard won triumph you may eventually earn. Neat. March 11, guys!

Pre-order Dark Souls II for more starter weapons

An optional head start
Feb 12

Early purchases of Dark Souls II will come with a voucher for the "Black Armor Weapons Pack" containing five weapons and shields (find the item descriptions below) which players can make use of at the beginning of the game. A...

Dark Souls II earns a 'T' rating from the ESRB

Uh, what?

Dark Souls II on PC looks set for May 31

If an Amazon listing's to be trusted
Feb 03

Only a bit shy of a month away from Dark Souls II's console release, many are left wondering when exactly the PC version will be unleashed upon the masses. From Software's said in the past that it would see a slight delay so...

Dark Souls II DLC will depend on fan feedback

There may be post-release content after all
Jan 31

It was admirable of From Software to treat Dark Souls II as "a full game," in the words of producer Takeshi Miyazoe, and not plan for DLC as a required part of production. I don't think any of us are expecting anything less f...

If Dark Souls were a TV show, I'd watch all of the reruns

PlayStation Access has about 12 minutes of Dark Souls II footage as played by some lucky soul at Namco Bandai and, thing is, it doesn't really cover new ground. It's the same shadowy underground areas lit up by torches, the ...

Après moi, le déluge: Have some Dark Souls II screens

Cool hat, man!
Jan 17

We're about two months away from Dark Souls II's March 11 (13, Japan; 14, PAL) release. If the trailer from a couple days ago wasn't enough to get you angrily excited, here are a bunch of new screenshots. There's a guy with a cool hat who looks like Cervantes.

The new Dark Souls II trailer is very, very noisy

What was that you said?
Jan 14

A new trailer for Dark Souls II has just hit the interwebs and it is thrilling. Huge enemies, vast and inhospitable environments, it's sticking to the playbook and that's just fine. The only problem I have with it is th...

Video spoilers!

After giving my full impressions for what I've played of Dark Souls II, I decided to break out the two boss encounters into their own article for two reasons: to go a little more in-depth on the game's combat, and to refrain ...

Dark Souls II feels slightly easier, but still on point

Impressions from the North American beta

When Demon's Souls was released and I wrote up my review, many readers didn't believe that I had actually completed the game. But I didn't get what all the buzz was about, because I've never found the Souls series to be pa...

You can never have enough Dark Souls II beta footage

Can't look away
