Producer says F.E.A.R. 2 AI is 'second to none' photo

Eric Studer, associate producer for the newly-named F.E.A.R. 2,was more than happy to boast about the enemy AI in the upcoming sequel to the popular FPS. In an interview with CVG, Studer said that the AI “is second to none” and that the game will “keep [players] on [their] toes at every turn.”

Studer elaborated on his statement by pointing out how the AI adjusts to player behavior:

As such we didn't want to create an expectation in the players mind for how to progress through a level. If you want to blast your way through an environment, you can do that. If you want to kill every enemy at a slower pace, you're encouraged to do that as well. The AI will respond in kind, but it was key that we let players determine exactly how they progress.
Decent AI in a horror-centric game always spells many a restless nights for me as I try to toss away the memories of creepy ghouls and circumspect hallways. At least the AI won’t be able to observe me jumping up and down on the couch whenever something particularly scary happens. I would hate for a game to taunt me as much as the people that sit next to me whenever I play these games.

Do Not Worry People, Left 4 Dead is coming soon enough. I kid, I kid.

FEAR on PC was fantastic, especially when they gave away the multiplayer segment for free. That's how you're suppose to do it. Actually encouraged me to buy the full game.

You can learn a lesson from this EA/Crytek/Bitch PC Developers.

But then again, no one will ever compare to Blizzard when it comes to support.

Except Valve, Valve shits on blizzard, then wipes it with it off with WoW.

FEAR's AI was stellar. If nothing else, the prospect of even better AI makes me really excited for the sequel. Those clone soldiers would hunt you down no matter how far you ran or how well you hid.

I'd hit that.

In a heartbeat.

I'm actually playing the first FEAR for the first time right now. Needless to say, I've had a few 'crap my pants' moments. Playing in the dark is awesome. The AI was challenging in the first half, but are kind of predictable now. Hopefully they'll change the pacing in the next one.

F.E.A.R. had the best AI of any game at the time. In fact you'll be hard pressed to find a game made since that had as good AI. I have no doubt that F.E.A.R. 2 will again raise the bar.

"Producer says F.E.A.R. 2 AI is 'second to none'"

I didn't know there was a game called None coming out.
Whats it about?

@Scrixx don't forget Epic, they show lots of support for their games after release.

Anyways F.E.A.R. had some of the best AI that I have seen to date so improving what was already present in the first games should be fantastic.

I just want to understand, but please explain to me why some words are in square brackets. I see that sort of thing all the time, are you putting the words in for the people where they missed the words?
“keep [players] on [their] toes at every turn.”

the guy originally said
"keep on toes at every turn" ? There's a lot of game developers, musicians and politicians that have very bad grammar then. There's most probably another explanation, is a sentence being paraphrased to make sense in context of a short quote?

There's not much you can do (or have to) with AI in a corridor shooter. Besides, F.E.A.R. AI is dumb. You know how to beat every encounter in F.E.A.R. that isn't scripted?

1. When you hear enemies up ahead,
2. Find a corner and crouch.
3. Turn your flashlight on towards the doorway where the enemy is.
4. The enemy will be attracted towards the light: "What the hell was that" and so forth.
5. Pop them as they walk past the doorway.
6. Rinse and repeat until every enemy is killed like the stupid idiots they are.
7. Proceed through the doorway.

I don't know about you but some people actually enjoy -playing- games instead of dumbing the entire game down with exploits and glitches.

Okay, I found a page that explains square brackets in quotes. It just seems quite comedic that you can put your own words in brackets in, it looks quite odd. I'm sure it's been lampooned before with random and funny words put in a sensible quote because it already looks odd xD.

I thought the FEAR AI was decent, but they really didn't give it enough chances to shine. Virtually all of the enemy encounters were in set arenas that they wouldn't leave and you can't sneak past. I'd love to see some huge open areas with multiple routes full of enemies.

So then the game is gonna be a piece of shit just like the first one then?

Whenever a developer hypes up one aspect of the game, that's usually the best aspect of it, everything else falls flat, F.E.A.R had great A.I but the gameplay was terrible and not scary at all.

Poor guy just wants a hug.

I loved FEAR. It was one of the most memorable FPS games I had played through since Half-Life 2. Very unique and yet familiar at the same time.

The original FEAR's AI was second to none! I used to love fighting those guards and creatures all night long... they actually flanked me and used the environment in an effective manner. I think my favourite part of the AI was the genuine panic though, enemies were not immediately knowledgeable about everything that was happening. ex. I throw a grenade through glass into a room of baddies. They scream "oh shit!" then proceed to have half the room blown away, including the squad leader. Baddies start acting alone and no orders are given (at least none that are followed).

I always loved it when enemies would panic after having their asses kicked, and their attempts to recover basically resulted in conversations like this:
"Cover me!"
"Hell no!"

FEAR had good AI, and it was a totally underrated game.

Does anyone remember the part in the first level where that half a second frame pops up on the screen?

pretty sure that is the most scary video game moment I've ever run into...pissed myself a bit.
