Eric Studer, associate producer for the newly-named F.E.A.R. 2,was more than happy to boast about the enemy AI in the upcoming sequel to the popular FPS. In an interview with CVG, Studer said that the AI “is second to none” and that the game will “keep [players] on [their] toes at every turn.”
Studer elaborated on his statement by pointing out how the AI adjusts to player behavior:
As such we didn't want to create an expectation in the players mind for how to progress through a level. If you want to blast your way through an environment, you can do that. If you want to kill every enemy at a slower pace, you're encouraged to do that as well. The AI will respond in kind, but it was key that we let players determine exactly how they progress.
Decent AI in a horror-centric game always spells many a restless nights for me as I try to toss away the memories of creepy ghouls and circumspect hallways. At least the AI won’t be able to observe me jumping up and down on the couch whenever something particularly scary happens. I would hate for a game to taunt me as much as the people that sit next to me whenever I play these games.

Destructoid is an open discussion community. You don't need to "audition" to post a comment - just speak your mind. We respect differing opinions on the site, so have at it. Be smart, funny, insightful, clueless, or cute -- but back it up with substance. Keep your cool, keep it fun. We only ask that you act respectfully and above all: don't be a troll and ruin it for everyone else. Don't bring down gamers or we'll, you know, gently shoot you in the face and stuff you into a flaming mailbox. Each comment is your opportuntity to make this community awesomer. Is that even a word?
Avoiding the banhammer only requires common sense: spamming, trolling, racism, NSFW stuff, and other forms of sucking will not be tolerated. If anyone is griefing please report abuse. Be good. Don't suck!
FEAR on PC was fantastic, especially when they gave away the multiplayer segment for free. That's how you're suppose to do it. Actually encouraged me to buy the full game.
You can learn a lesson from this EA/Crytek/Bitch PC Developers.
But then again, no one will ever compare to Blizzard when it comes to support.
Except Valve, Valve shits on blizzard, then wipes it with it off with WoW.
In a heartbeat.
I didn't know there was a game called None coming out.
Whats it about?
Anyways F.E.A.R. had some of the best AI that I have seen to date so improving what was already present in the first games should be fantastic.
“keep [players] on [their] toes at every turn.”
the guy originally said
"keep on toes at every turn" ? There's a lot of game developers, musicians and politicians that have very bad grammar then. There's most probably another explanation, is a sentence being paraphrased to make sense in context of a short quote?
1. When you hear enemies up ahead,
2. Find a corner and crouch.
3. Turn your flashlight on towards the doorway where the enemy is.
4. The enemy will be attracted towards the light: "What the hell was that" and so forth.
5. Pop them as they walk past the doorway.
6. Rinse and repeat until every enemy is killed like the stupid idiots they are.
7. Proceed through the doorway.
I don't know about you but some people actually enjoy -playing- games instead of dumbing the entire game down with exploits and glitches.
Whenever a developer hypes up one aspect of the game, that's usually the best aspect of it, everything else falls flat, F.E.A.R had great A.I but the gameplay was terrible and not scary at all.
I loved FEAR. It was one of the most memorable FPS games I had played through since Half-Life 2. Very unique and yet familiar at the same time.
"Cover me!"
"Hell no!"
Does anyone remember the part in the first level where that half a second frame pops up on the screen?
pretty sure that is the most scary video game moment I've ever run into...pissed myself a bit.
