Street Fighter is the drunken cheerleader slut of the fighting game world, seemingly hopping into bed with every other fighter franchise out there. However, Street Fighter's legs have always clamped firmly shut when Mortal Kombat comes round with a bunch of flowers and a bag of roofies. Despite this, producer Hector Sanchez believes that a union is inevitable.
Strangely, although Sanchez says it's definitely going to happen one day, he places some pretty big conditions on the situation, first stating that a crossover "depends on the success of Street Fighter X Tekken." He then adds that the whole issue of violence and Fatalities would be an issue as well: "I'm not sure Capcom would be happy with Scorpion ripping Ken's head off."
But hey, aside from that, it's bound to happen, right?
I'd love to see Scorpion pulling Ryu's head off, by the way.

Market saturation much.
I spent most of the evenings this week watching the entire Matrix trilogy.
I think there's a glitch in the Matrix, either that or Agent Smith is talking to me through my computer.
Shit.
In addition to Mortal Kombat there are a ton of other crappy, happily neglected properties out there waiting to be given the versus treatment.
It will be something like DC vs Mortal Kombat.
It will come out the same day as Dukem Nukem 4ever.
I dunno man. If I learned anything from that Street Fighter cartoon it's that Chun Li can make armored tanks EXPLODE via karate chops. That's pretty damn devestating.
And I'd love to see it happen, it would be even lighter than MKvsDC, but I don't give a crap, just throwing acid on Cammy's stupid face is enough for me.
Of course, that's what I thought about Tekken vs. Street Fighter.
I liked Mortal Kombat fine as a kid. The newer games have been pretty mediocre however.
"Sure there's other fighters out there these days that may be better, but they're essentially just riffing on something Street Fighter and Mortal Kombat did first. It's kind of like saying that the original Star Wars has bad special effects; missing the point entirely."
Ahh, you mean riffing on something Street Fighter did first, and did better, before any Mortal Kombats ever saw the light of day? Street Fighter II came out a full year before Mortal Kombat. Mortal Kombat was created explicitly to capture the popularity of Street Fighter II:
"According to various articles, the first Mortal Kombat game was, "... put together in 10 months in 1991-1992..." [26] and also in an interview with Official Nintendo Magazine, Mortal Kombat co-creator, Ed Boon, stated, "Mortal Kombat started out with four people in 1991; I was the only programmer, John Tobias and John Vogel were the only two artists, and Dan Forden was the only sound designer. That was it. We developed the first Mortal Kombat in ten months from beginning to end..." .[27] however, other sources tend to differ. For example, on Shacknews it is stated, "Mortal Kombat was created by Midway Games in only five and a half months as a competitor for the hugely popular Street Fighter II..." [28]...In a 1994 interview with the creators, Ed Boon and John Tobias, it was stated that the task that the developers were given by Midway was to create a "combat game for release within a year." The article later states that although both creators say the intention was to create a game for release in a certain time frame, they believe that the Midway officials may have been motivated to create a fighting game because of introduction of the Japanese fighting game series, Street Fighter.[26]"
Keep in mind, this was already Street Fighter II.
Now, I love Mortal Kombat back in the day, but, with hindsight, it's clear that Street Fighter II was a better, more influential, and more original game
So, basically, post-MK Trilogy has been awful. MK-MK Trilogy was good, but Street Fighter was still better.
In it's glory days, Mortal Kombat was Street Fighter's awkward cousin that tried way too hard to be cool, which just made it worse.
Haha, so very, very true. It would almost be worth it if they maintained the controls, speed, handling from their separate systems, just so we could see Street Fighter characters absolutely pwn MK characters. It wouldn't even be fair....
"Capcom Vs. Aksys" - Now there, my friends, is an idea.
Capcom would hold all the cards in this sort of situation considering MK's absolute weakness in the market, especially if Capcom intends for this to be a tournament-capable game (which MK has never been imo). I don't want this to ever happen as I think we'd run into another MK v. DC situation.
Until the day I die, I will hate all over any fighting game that has a separate block button.
Exactly, there is little reason to continue to play Mortal Kombat after you've seen all the fatalities. The game has ALWAYS had a bad fighting game engine.
Made with four people. That's probably why MK always felt like a game with cardboard cut out.
Second, Street Fighter stole from Yie Ar Kung Fu anyway... or put another way... ANY original thought you believe a game has, ANY innovation you THINK came out of the blue, or in ANY capacity which you game snobs think this is how a genre truly started, you're wrong. Some developer did it before, this idea was likely not as good as the followup, and the supposed start of the idea was in all likelyhood stolen from some obscure Commodore or Amiga game. Clones exist. Good clones expand on the original idea. But if you believe for one minute that Street Fighter II just INVENTED this shit out of the blue, you';re an idiot. Learn your gaming history, learn that innovation is, in all likelyhood, a lie, and learn to respect gaming culture outside of your narrow circle.
Mortal Kombat games have diverged wildly from their 2D roots and tried a lot of different things, and I have no doubt that Fatalities would never be part of the eventual production, given that Capcom most certainly holds the upper hand as far as negotiations would go.
So what would a Mortal Kombat character be without the gimmicks? Nothing special, really. Most of the characters are pallette swaps and uninteresting, and only a few have any moves not duplicated by some Street Fighter or Marvel character.
I'm apparently a fighting game hipster because I'm aware of the fact that Mortal Kombat is a terrible game? Mortal Kombat has existed so long for two reasons. The first being that it was born during the arcade era and was unique from other fighters in that it over-the-top finishing moves. The second reason being was because back in the day Midway was actually a relevant publisher and developer. The only reason it continues to exist is because a group of devoted fans who still love the game continue to buy, though you'll notice the sales have been decreasing since the fourth title. It's the only game Midway has that some people still buy, that's why there continues to be multiple entries to the series.
Quality of a game or franchise has NEVER been the reason that game has had it's universe expanded and capitalized on. Whether or not the game sells is why a game continues to exist. It's why there's a sequel to Kane & Lynch. Also, who is claiming that Street Fighter is the alpha and omega of fighting games?
@Malik You're right about Mortal Kombat and why it sells. People dislike hearing that the series is laughable as a whole, and even as a fan of the older games myself, I think it's a complete joke. It was certainly never developed to be a legitimate competitor in the fighting game tournament scene. People harping about Tekken being a 3D fighter seem to forget it wasn't always so, and that Tekken is a much better idea for a crossover than Mortal Kombat. The novelty of seeing tons of organs come out of my opponent when I uppercut his head off three times wore off when I was 12?
the argument against true fighting game fans wanting complexity is about as good as someone saying that people were idiots for wanting dedicated servers for modern warfare 2 or people wanting to use buttons and analog sticks/dpads instead of flailing wii controls..
just because a couple million people still go out and buy mortal kombat, doesnt mean the series isnt tired and flawed.
yie ar kung fu? street fighter ripped it off because its a one on one fighting game? lets not remember street fighter added moves and oh yeah.. TWO PLAYER VERSUS. if games had stayed like yie ar kung fu, we wouldnt have had a whole genre.. its street fighter II's fault that fighting games were even a thing to begin with. the reason the genre went into "critical condition" was an overload of fighters followed by.. um i dunno.. capcom and snk not making anymore games in the genre. besides street fighter, mk, tekken, and soul calibur.. there really arent any million sellers in the genre... it was the in thing in the 90s.. like open world games are today.. (the platformer in the 90s is like the shooter is today).
but yeah.. mk is just an over the top violent fighting game with poor fighting game mechanics.. its not street fighter fans saying this.. its fans of the entire genre in general..
You really shouldn't be talking about fighting games.
Shit doesn't even deserve to cross over with Arcana Heart, much less Street Fighter.
And I don't think anyone says that SF2 came out of the blue as a completely unique game, but fact is there would be no fighting genre as it is now without it. SF2 mad fighting games popular, and after they had basically died out guess what brought them back to the front of attention, SF4. It doesn't matter if you don't enjoy SF, or how original you think the games are, they made the entire genre what it is today, they keep it alive, they bring the crowds to the tourneys (how many people would of gone to EVO this year if they didn't have SSF4 there), they the biggest fighting games for a reason, because they thrive on quality, not a gimmick like gore.
