Prisoners in the UK provided with PlayStation 2 consoles photo

The Labour government has today revealed that 120 PlayStation 2 consoles have been installed in prisons for young offenders, an installation process that has cost the country £15,000. Those who commit crimes in our 'glorious' nation can now look forward to getting in a few free rounds of Devil May Cry instead of actually being, you know, punished for their crimes.

Instead of games machines going to orphanages, hospitals and other places that actually deserve them, it is the criminal element of this country that once again gets preferential treatment for no discernable reason other than there's always some bleeding heart out there that thinks the scum of society need to be pampered and not disciplined. I'll remember that next time I spend my own, hard earned money on a console. I'll be sure to remember that some crackhead is playing his for nothing, and that the taxes of decent people are funding him.

This is easily among the most stupid, counter-productive and disgusting things the British government has done. As Tory spokesman Nick Herbet said, "We need to be focussing on getting young offenders back into the world of work, not allowing them to play computer games." Also, isn't it funny that a country that bans violent videogames and demonizes them as corrupting influences is actually providing prisoners with them? There is something seriously messed up with this ridiculous country.

I thought this had been going on for years. So I'd been told anyway.

for fucks sake. on 1 hand the media makes gaming companies out to be the root of all thats evil, and with the same fucking mind they hand over PS2s to fuckups in prisons?

you "ground" these kids for playing so many of these evil video games claiming its corruption of their young fragile minds and then reward them when they do something moronic to actually merit taking it away.

no people dont care about the good kids. thats why its always much more fun to play the villain than to be the damn hero.

ug headache.

"im not bad im just drawn that way"

Well, the article doesn't say anything about getting any actual games, so maybe that's the punishment. They only get to turn it on and watch the splash screen. Kinda like what I do with my PS3 now.

@Obshaky

I agree with you, there are those in lock-up who don't deserve to be there. Non-violent drug offenders and innocent but somehow proven guilty folks may end up in jail, which is a travesty. But I don't understand how giving them PS2s will right the wrong. "Oh, sorry we fucked up and jailed you, Mr. Innocent guy. We're not going to pardon you and give you back your freedom, but here 's a PS2. Congratulations, Son."
Yeah, it may make their inexcusable prison sentence a little less like Hell, but those people deserve more than a video game console.

Its my opinion that this PS2 deal is ridiculous. You're in jail as a punishment for committing a crime. It's supposed to suck. Man up and take your sentence!
Who is paying for these PS2s??? Those of us who stay on the right side of the law and pay our dues. We're the ones being punished with this kind of enactment.

I bet a few PS2's for groups of inmates cost less than for example the physical exercise material they already purchase. The article says nothing at all about how these consoles will be used in prisons. It's a bit presumptious to say that they will end up in the hands of baby rapers.

This supports my original idea that: Some people would kill for a ps2

@Jim: "You" give PS2s to prisoners because jail (as wrong an institution as it is) is a punishment consisting in the deprivation of liberty, not in providing the worst possible life conditions to the inmate. You may very well not agree with my views, but I believe making jail harsher only drags minor offenders towards the bottom. And yes, capitalism is a bad thing in my book (communism is, too, don't worry ;) ). By the way, the drift of the UK towards the USA has a chapter of its own.

0bshaky, can I have some of what you're on? Seriously, that reasoning is so insane you're making the ghost of Syd Barrett jealous.

I'm not saying you should give presents like a PS2 to just all inmates. I do know that research has shown that harsher conditions and higher sentences do not lead to less crime, and that they also lead to more criminalization inside the prisons. While that is kinda a different story than this, you have to remember that prison is an institution to rehabilitate people to get back into society. Not primarily to just lock them away.

Now, this was about youth offenders. They often don't even know wtf they are doing. I will never defend any young guy that thinks he has the right to shoot people or rape someone. And whatever the reason is for their criminal behavior, that is not relevant here. There are however programs in which people in prison can work to get small "rewards". Think of it as positive reinforcement. In many cases, this works better than negative reinforcement. They could use the ps2's to lure youths into better behavior so they can play ps2 if they behave. Or they can lose their ps2 privilages if they get into a fight. Losing something like that can be more of an incentive than having some guy tell you what to do and how to act.

Now, all this shit is ofcourse "could be" and "might be" but since the article doesn't state anyhting, I don't see any reason to cling to the alternative of "they just give ps2's to Criminals". There are programs with reward incentives out there that have worked on certain types of low-key criminal youths. Whether the incentive is a PS2 or yard-time, is the same to me. If it turns out that they just hand over boxes to prisons that don't have any kind of program, well then I agree that is absolutely idiotic.

Xenon: I'm not talking about providing the worst possible conditions, but consoles? That's something of a luxury, and the provision of luxury to young offenders is not something I can ever agree with.

You want those little fuckers to have something to do in there? Books. Lots and lots of books.

Consoles are absolutely a luxury, no objection. Maybe someone thought it's better to have a young offender avidly playing videogames than having him fighting, cutting himself or sinffing glue with a pile of books sitting on a shelf in their cellophane.

Education should be the primary objective of juvenile detention, and education through harshness only makes the subject a worse person and gives the "educator" a false sense of temporary domination. It's the same with dogs. ;)

All this said, I must admit you have a point nevertheless. But consider you're dealing with kids and you want (at least hope) to make them better persons, not to train them for future convictions.

Give 'em manhunt 2 so they can learn specifically how to break out of a locked down space and brutally murder everyone who comes into your path. Or, not.

Xenon:If someone thought that, then they shouldn't be dealing with the sector of governing. Allowing an offender to just sit there and play videogames isn't going to help them in the long run. They'll just think prison isn't so bad after all. And yes, in a way, prison should NEVER be a pleasant place to be. Prison should, first and foremost, act as a detterent, and if there are free PS2s inside them, I don't think that does a good job of making jail the fearsome prospect it should be.

As I said, if you want to help these people while at the same time keeping them occupied, then give them books. Let them read. Educate them. Also, give them work to do, like the American jails that have them build roads, earn money, be self sufficient.

My views of prisoners is harsh, but there are many positive things you can do with them. Giving them PlayStations to play with isn't one of them.

Heh books, the one thing that youth offender will absolutely want to change their behavior for! Putting anything joyful in prisons won't change the level of deterrent.. The main reason they go to prison is not because they are evil masterminds that include a well thought-out rationale about what awaits them. It's almost everytime some kid acting before he thinks. Let alone the peer influences that can render any information about prison null and void if they want to.

Harsh punishments and environments can repel some people from criminal behavior. The kind that acutally thinks about what they do. But the large majority of youth offenders does not belong to this group.

If a properly targeted use of those things that youths hold dear(PS2 is still the biggest thing for youths in the UK I believe?) can lead to effective 'treatment' and a lower level of recidivism, why shouldn't it be used?

They should of course also have to learn how to fulfill a normal role in society, how to feel responsible and how to work for their money. But 120 for a country like the UK isn't much in my eyes, and if the cost of 1 ps2 can lead to better results than the cost of other methods, then it why should it not be considered? I can't read any information about this in the source article though. I do see that how without such information, it's easy to see it as prisoners being pampered.

If using ps2's works better for long-term recidivism rates than older methods, they have my vote. If not, then they don't.
