And E Prinny, I have a funny feeling that you'll be able to look past the game's flaws and enjoy it.
Disgaea gives you plenty of options to level while doing enjoyable new things, all the alternate versions of every single level, the item world, you can change the enemies with different bills, but yeah, sure, it's all badly designed grinding. And what are the "glaring design flaws" you're talking about? I can't think of one, the Disgaea series is easily the best SRPG series I've ever played, and I'm a big fan of the genre.
Anyway I'll probably be getting this through download on my PSP, walking into a store to buy a game called dawn of operation panties would be awkward to say the least, kinda suprised they kept that subtitle.
@Pekopon TAS- How so?
@ Kefkaesque- It's a matter of opinion of course, but I don't think the alternate versions of each level and that other stuff you mentioned were really "new things", just old things with a new coat of paint. As for design flaws, I only played Disgaea 1 and 2, but they seemed to be all about breaking the game, then pretending it was on purpose. The difficulty was all over the place, as was the balance.
That was my experience with the game. I'm happy to hear that yours was more positive than mine.
The fact that they try emasculate you with baby mode diapers made me laugh. The game would have been far better with that difficulty mode as the default.
The whole thing made me slightly disappointed, but it was still fairly enjoyable.
Also Asagi wars is 20 times better than the original mode. Having a blast and hating guitars now.
Yes I am a big Disgaea fan, but I hated Prinny 1. I really hated the stiff jumping and limited depth the game had.
Prinny 2 makes a better game, but it seems to have lost some of it's charm due to the VA.
I didn't bite on the DLC, which even after the price drop was still too steep.
NIS used to understand the concept of value, they lost that concept from Disgaea 3 onward.
Incorrect. Playing for score requires use of all of prinny's moveset.
I also think that the stage specific hazards aren't a smart addition, and overall hinder the experience, the fact that they decreased the amount of health on normal mode is a real downer, and the Prinny in this game is a total dick. In the first game he was way more likable, and I really felt like rooting him on. In Prinny 2 he's such an unlikable creep that I don't find him enjoyable. I also feel the story is way weaker. In Prinny 2 they're collecting rare items to set in a trap to lure the guy who stole Etna's panties. In Prinny 1 they were collecting items to put into a dessert. It was funnier in the first game because all the weird stuff you were getting, like monster toenails and stuff, was going into food.
Overall the gameplay is fine, which is the most important thing, but they messed up most of the other stuff that made Prinny 1 good. As it stands, Prinny 2 is more of the same, but not as good. Though again, this is just the cliff notes, and I should really go into more detail in a blog at some point.
I know that score =/=speed, but the idea is the same. Like with any game, you can try to challenge yourself to play Prinny 2 beyond what the game requires of you, but that's just extra credit, and doesn't do much to change the fact that "butt pound, attack, combo fill, repeat" will get you through almost all of the game.
Also, calling Nick Chester "fatso" only works to make you seem petty and bitter, which greatly lessens the legitimacy of anything negative you may have to say about his writing or his review.
@ PekoponTAS - I look forward to your blog! It's always interesting to see a familiar game through someone else's eyes.
As for you, mattrodroid...
I did figure out what was necessary to beat the levels; butt stomp, attack, repeat. The game wasn't all that hard, actually, nothing compared to Super Meat Boy and some of the other games I've reviewed, but that's beside the point.
Lets try it like this. Do me a favor and answer these questions.
Would the game have been better, or worse, if the camera actually scrolled along with the character when you get to the top or bottom of the screen, like it does in just about every other well made 2D platformer? Wouldn't a fully scrolling camera allow you to see some of the sometimes random attacks from unseen enemies that will hit you while exploring vertically? Wouldn't that make the game more fair, and therefore, better designed?
If your answer is "No way! Getting hit by fast, nearly invisible attacks is awesome fun! Prinny 2's camera is perfect!" then I think your either too attached to this game to see its flaws, or you've just got really weird taste in videogames.
If, however, you can see that Prinny 2's camera is not perfect, but that you just don't think I should have mentioned it for some reason, then we can just agree to disagree on how important the game's camera issues are. Like I said in the review, I don't think the fact that camera is a bit borked is that big of a deal, but for some reason, you really zeroed in on that.
Weird.
Any unseen difficulty or shortcomings can be shrugged off as "it's supposed to be hard", like picking Dan or a low tier in a fighting game.
However! They make excellent sprites and they animate them beautifully most of the time. The overall gameplay and jumping is still fairly decent.
Prinny 1 had the better VA but Prinny 2 had the better combo system. I liked Prinny 2 better than Prinny 1, Voices aside.
So this review is pretty accurate, especially considering how Destructoid reviews are not on the 4 point scale that most other review sites use.
Apparently you've never played or reviewed a game with a scoring system before. That's ok, you might learn about them some day.
>Also, calling Nick Chester "fatso"
I was talking about Jim Sterling, but ok.
