Prince of Persia Wii confirmed as port photo

God damn it. You game developers just don't get it, do you? Ports will not get you anywhere with the Wii. This has already been established. Wii ports suck, and there's not much you can do about it. Comparisons (graphical and otherwise) will always be drawn between the Wii version and the 360/PS3 version. The only thing worse than a Wii port of a "next-gen" game is a Wii port of a "last gen" game. And sadly, the Prince of Persia title scheduled to release for the Wii in March is just that. A port of The Two Thrones. Here's the post on niwifi that confirms it:

I don’t know if I’ve gotten my next Nintendo Power issue before everyone else, but it is LOADED with great news! NP has an exclusive on the new Prince of Persia game coming to Wii. Apparently it is a rework of The Two Thrones which was released last year. I’ve never played this one in the series, but I’ve only heard good things. The article shows how exactly the game will be controlled with the wiimote/nunchuk combination. Here are the moves it goes over:

  • Dagger Plant
  • Speed Kill
  • Free-Form Fighting
  • The Daggertail

I won’t spoil how exactly they use the Wii’s controls, but it looks great! Suffice it to say, Prince of Persia on Wii is shaping up to be another must-have title in Wii’s ever-expanding library of AAA games.

Must-have my foot. I hate to be a pessimist, and I admit, I haven't seen this issue of Nintendo Power, but the game sounds like a lazy port to me. Get with the program, Ubisoft. Laziness and ports and tacked-on controls aren't the key to exploiting the Wii's potential. Can we please see something more original?

Really disappointed in Ubisoft regarding the Wii there motto must be quantity over quality, spit as many titles out as possible, the lesser they cost the better and keep hoping people will buy them. They really start to look like EA don't they?

Finally other people are starting to think they suck and are turning into EA. They haven't made a decent rayman game since the N64 and all their other games are full of bugs and shit or just look crap. Ever since they changed their logo basically they've sucked. It's a conspiricy.

Why is anyone surprised by this? If you actually played the PoP series you would know that they intended to do the series as a triology and in TT they pretty much brought the story to a close. So when I saw the PoP was on the list of games for the Wii the first thing I said was, "remake".

I am surprised that they chose to do TT as opposed to SoT since SoT seemed to be a lot more popular in general. Plus it would give them a chance to re-release all three titles again if it actually sold well, though I doubt it will since most people who were into PoP already bought and played all three. I think it is a mistake to re-release the series since the Wii controls won't really add much (certianly won't convince me to buy it again), but since the Wii has supposedly attracted more casual games it may make sense to have the title available.

And if you don't like their methods or think their games suck, then don't buy them. Simple as that. And for the record, the new Rayman for the Wii is fun as hell.

Man, here we go. This game is gonna suck ass.
I refuse to drive myself crazy trying to balance the wiimote in my hand so the prince doesn't fall to his death after 20 minutes of platforming to get to where he is. Is anybody really going to dish out money for something they already played a year ago just because it's more frustrating?

I guess Icarus got it right. It's probably to attract the casual gamers who haven't played it before for a little extra money.

one game they should re make is beyond good and evil. since it was good and no one hardly played it. that would be a good remake and if it does good they will they could make a number 2.

Cruds at 12/16/2006 13:27
please, they could just release the GC version of beyond good and evil for half the price, work great on the Wii. Can we stop with bringing old games to a new console. And Icarus got it wrong casual gamers aren't interested, They bought the machine for something different than the games we be playing all those times. So give the casual gamers what they want and expect and start making new shit, like this http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UVsfc3JXzt0&eurl=

on the plus side this was better than the second one and in addition, the wii library is expanding nicely. I'd rather have options than just a few games. but really, you're right - fewer GC ports would be nice. I can't wait until developers really get into the graphics like they did for RE4 on the 'cube. I bet we're going to start seeing some original good looking third party stuff soon

I am not saying that it will sell... I said before that TT was less popular than SoT in general and most people who would want to play PoP would have already played it. I am just saying Ubi's logic might be that it will be another option for the newer gamers that the Wii will bring in... people who may not have known about the PoP series. That's the whole point of the Wii... bringing in new casual gamers and if they are new to gaming who knows if they will or won't try it... it's new to them. I personally doubt this strategy will work, but that's just my opinion.

What the heck is up with UBISOFT and the Wii.... ???? First Red Steel, now a last gen port? Comeon dudes, get off your asses and produce something thats actually worth a damn. I made the mistake of preordering Red Steel against my better judgement, played through half an hour, then threw it in the pile of 'crap I just don't care about'. I'm not even going to look at this abomination.

This is the best news!

I was totally looking forward to playing a sloppy port of a game that came out over a year ago (and one that I can already play on the system to begin with).

WTF, Ubisoft? These games are not going to sell; you're going to blame the hardware; and question future third party support. This is what happened with the Gamecube. You MUST tailor games to both the hardware and the demographic of the console. This misses both marks.

Cancel this game and use it's budget towards the next-gen PoP games coming to the PC, 360, and PS3. Don't be jerks. I like you guys. Let's keep it that way.

They did make Rayman Raving Rabbids which isn't bad at all. At least that's one point for them. I'd love to see them slow down and put their effort into 1/3 of the amount of titles they're releasing.

I would like to see companies stop being lazy and start making dedicated games for a system that is completely different to the 360 and PS3. This just reads cheap.

Nintendo fanboys have been chanting "graphics don't matter" for months. Nintedo releases Twilight Princess (probably the most important Wii title) with no graphical improvements from the GC version, and consumers swallow it whole. Nintendo has been complaining about high dev costs and the fact that game prices drop too fast. Fanboys agree and go out of their way to defend budget productions and/or cost-cutting (including argue over low review scores, like TP getting an 8 instead of 10, or Elebits getting a 5).

What incentive do developers have to actually take advantage of the system, besides tacking on some different controls? People are begging for pay full price for mediocrity.

Last-gen ports (which are quite popular on the Wii right now) cannot be the norm for a "revolutionary" console. I suppose that's why we'll still be getting 20-year-old ROMs off Virtual Console for a while, instead of original content, or even remakes.

I think everyone's being a little too quick to criticise here. Sure, the majority of ubisoft titles released thus far have been less than phenomenal, but that could be largely attributed to them being rushed to fit into the launch window. There was red steel, which was oh-so-very promising, but had a difficult control system and too many glitches. There's farcry, which has nice controls & fun shooting action, but looks like ass due to the differences between xbox and wii system architectures. There's rayman, which is clearly built for the wii, and as a result is a heap of fun(apart from those two levels where you have to hit the different colour stereos that's broken and makes me want to cry because I had beaten every single other game thus far and I had to keep playing it over and over and over...). There were others, but none of us care much about them.

The problem appears to me to be the limits in their development time more than anything else. They wanted to show their support(ie. cash in on its predicted popularity) by having more launch titles than any other company. So many games in such a short period is not easy, hence the low average quality. With more freedom with time, and with a damn enjoyable franchise, you never know.

Note, this is more devils advocacy than blind fanboyism. I just don't really like the whole "company announces game at some point in future, fans declare it worst game ever" thing going on.

Ubisoft is doing something that makes sense financially. Fill up the launch window void with as many quick & dirty ports as they can, sell those ports to Wii owners who will be hungry for new games, endear themselves to Nintendo by providing lots of third-party love, earn a ton of green off the games they're shoveling out, and put that cash (hopefully) into developing new and more innovative titles for the system.

And the more ports the company makes in the begining, the faster they'll become familar with developing for the Wii. The games we're seeing now are the testbeds for new control schemes, and finding out what works and what doesn't with the system. Better that happens in the first few months of the Wii's life rather than taking the first few years. If you're not interested in a port of a previously released Ubisoft title, just don't buy it.

But yeah, I'd rather see an all new PoP game on the Wii too. :)
