Prince of Persia movie poster freaking sucks photo

So Jake “my last name sucks to type” Gyllenhaal looks pretty damn good on the Prince of Persia movie poster. It’s a good pose and the outfit looks great. The tagline isn’t that bad, either! The second poster features the sexy Gemma Arterton, who also looks pretty good.

The problem with the posters, though, is the f**king font. Look at that sh*t. What the f**k am I even looking at? You could make a white guy look Persiany, but you can’t make the damn typeface look Persian? Not even a little?

Who uses f**king Helvetica in bold for a movie poster about Persia, anyway?! The artist couldn’t even try to “borrow” the font from the games? Dammit, Hollywood.

Most movie posters now-a-days suck. This one just happens to be one of 'em.

Honestly didn't even notice until you brought it up. Maybe Hamza needs to chill out.

..but now that you mention it, it does look pretty god awful.

That exact same font could be the font for anything set in the future.

TIME IS NOT FONT, FONT IS TIME.

The font that was the first thing I noticed. But then again, typography is my love, and pretty much is what makes me good at my job (graphic design). And I agree, the text on these posters is awful.

FYI: There's another poster featuring Ben Kingsley in character as well.

If it was a "Persian" logo, you would've bitched that it looks cheesy and "too Persian and videogame-y".

I like this more modern look. They should stay the fuck away from any reference to the game during advertising, part of the failure of Hitman and Max Payne is that they tried to link them too much to the source of inspiration and everybody was like 2oh look, another shitty videogame movie".

They probably looked at the teaser poster:

and thought "no, that looks too AUTHENTIC. Remember we're making a VIDEOGAME MOVIE here people! Get me the font from Vantage Point so we can really balls this up."

I don't think that comes anywhere near qualifying as "freaking sucks." Not great; just seems pretty average.

a things thats bothering me.... is that they used the Warrior withing costume....... and called the movie Sands of time.......... if it was planed to be a trillogy they should have used the young prince costume.... would be more fiting for a first movie..... like in the games... but then again, we dont know what its going to be really about..... since its based on the game... the script could be anything.....

I actually like the font. Clean, uncluttered and as minimalistic as the B&W shot of Gyllenhaal. Strangely enough, my worry after seeing those posters is that they are trying to make the movie more "mature" than it needs to be. Sands of Time (which I guess is now the official game of the movie?) was a glorious, bloom-infested piece of Disney kitsch, and the posters don't really seem to reflect that at all...

@L0cky you're right that videogame-to-movie crossovers have not really had a great track record, but that was true of movie-to-videogame crossovers too until GoldenEye came along.

If Disney do the sensible thing and take the cool mechanics of the game (Parkour-style acrobatics and combat, time control) and then develop characters and story, then there's no reason why it can't be a big hit like Pirates of the Caribbean.

Sloppy and cheap work; looks like something a student would throw together as an initial design sketch. There's no balance in the text, the kerning is off, the spacing between lines is too varied. These are hopefully som very early prototypes, or fakes...

There are rumours that they're fake posters, what with the cast list missing Gyllenhaal and the wrong director being named.

Wow, were these posters even designed by the same person? One uses Helvetica and the other uses Gotham. Man I love Gotham, it's such a great font, which is why everyone now uses it for EVERYTHING. Now I have to force myself to hate it.

I think the typography of the poster is pretty good, subject matter notwithstanding. And I understand where they could be coming from with the "distancing themselves from the game as much as possible".

But still, I question the typeface choice, here.

@Timstuff: A lot more than you'd imagine.

As far it seems, it is from the creators of Pirates of the Caribbean. But... Johnny Depp's role as Jack Sparrow made that movie epic as hell, so I got my doubts too.

@ Monodi,

Creators of POTC? I'm not saying you're wrong, but do you know who exactly? Is it just the producers? It definitely isn't the same director. Gore Verbinksi directed POTC while Mike Newell (directed one of the Harry Potter movies.. that's all I know of) is directing Prince of Persia.

I also seem to be alone on my own little island when I feel that Jake Gyllenhaal was a horrible choice for the prince.

At any rate, POTC 2&3 were very forgettable. Let's hope for something at least a cut above those two.
