Prince of Persia creator pleased with the upcoming film photo

You may not know his face (hint: it's that one up there) but Jordan Mechner is famous for singlehandedly creating the celebrated original Prince of Persia games. You may also know that he had a hand in the more recent Sands of Time trilogy. What you may not know is that he is also involved in the upcoming Jerry Bruckheimer-produced movie adaptation of Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time, in a non-superficial manner.

At a recent screening of the trailer for the movie (which was leaked onto YouTube a few days ago), Jordan Mechner and Jerry Bruckheimer were present for a short Q&A session, where Mechner showed genuine enthusiasm about the film.

"I got this big smile on my face that wouldn't go away," Mechner said, when asked how it felt to see his creation brought to life. And when the inevitable question about the pitfalls of crappy videogame movies were brought up, Mechner's advice is that rather than just being a movie based on a videogame. "It's got to be a movie that can stand on its own."

So if the creator of the franchise is pleased with where Bruckheimer is taking his baby, can we take that to mean this movie might be worthwhile? Or do you remain doubtful about it, taking the more cynical "he is excited about it because he is going to make a lot of money from it" approach?

whatever people say has no weight whatsoever until I see this film myself. Especially people with a monetary interest in seeing this film do well.
Still...here's hoping he's right.

Let's just hope that IF this is successeful and good, they ignore the games that followed it and follow it up with something more consistent with The Sands of Time. I really hate how they took a great hero and reduced him to an angsty bitch with a "dark" side.

It's not like he can say it's a steaming pile if he's been asked to go promote it. It'll be interesting to see what he says about it after the movie's actually out.

Considering his hand in making the movie was co-writing the script I'd imagine he knew what to expect.

I've been optimistic. I haven't seen the trailer yet but considering Mechner has been eagle eyeing it since he let the script out of his hands and Bruckheimer isn't a half bad director I think it'll do good. Even if it star Gyllenhal.

Bruckheimer isn't directing it, he's the producer.

The guy who's directing it is the guy who directed Donnie Brasco, Mona Lisa Smile, and Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire.

I'm disturbingly confident in this game movie. Strange

Bruckheimer wasn't pleased with Gyllenhall's voice, it's dubbed by Nolan North.

Glad to see that you're not all taking the cynical approach. Just most of you.

As far as I'm concerned, this is just another movie in the vein of Pirates of the Caribbean. If Disney and Bruckheimer can do for this what they did in the first Pirates movie, it should be fun and entertaining. I'm down.

I think the money helps, but if it were my creation I'd want it to be as close as possible to my idea. If he thinks it will only enhance the concept of PoP then good for him. I'll probably watch it out of curiosity.

Though I'll probably watch Ninja Assassin &/ Zombieland before this.

I think this film is going to do well, as its perfect for such treatment, especially for a Disney summer film. Next to Kane and Lynch, I think this PoP film will show that, if you pick the right game material, good films can be adapted from them.

Fair play to the creator, as I'm sure he'll get a good pay from it, and the DVD sales after the fact.
