Preview: Vandal Hearts: Flames of Judgment photo

My all time favorite game, in the history of the world, beyond all shadow of doubt, is Gladius. This genius of a game sold like crap, and is, in my opinion, the most underappreciated of LucasArts games. I mention this because I adore strategy role-playing games, and if they aren’t positively drowning in anime stylings -- well, I’d be pretty damn happy.

So although I didn’t get to spend much time with Konami upcoming downloadable strategy RPG, Vandal Hearts: Flames of Judgment, I do have to say the prospect of a solid, 3D strategy role-playing game is pretty cool. For fans of the Vandal Hearts series, this is certainly something to keep an eye out for.

Vandal Hearts: Flame of Judgment (Xbox LIVE Arcade, PlayStation Network)
Developer: ?
Publisher: Konami
To be released: TBA

Vandal Hearts: Flames of Judgment looks to be a strategy role-playing game in its purist sense. The level they were showing off had a squad of spunky, cartoon tweens battling within a jungle setting against some undead skeletons. Each member had different skills and abilities, and they could move about the on a grid much like Fire Emblem or Advance Wars, except, you know, in 3D. The game looks pretty good, especially considering this is a downloadable game.

It’s a bit early to make much of an impression, but taking a look at the pics, it’s easy to see that Vandal Hearts: Flames of Judgment warrants some attention.

Wow that's an obscure series to bring back. And as an arcade title? Judging by the artwork it looks like this is another series they've outsourced to some random developer as well...

I love the first Vandal Hearts! Unfortunately I was never able to get my hands on the second and nowadays it's expensive as hell. I hope this will be good, but I'm not a fan of the art style. I much preferred the original's.

Damn, it's been a minute since I've heard anyone mention Vandal Hearts. The first game was awesome even though you were NOT allowed to level grind. The second game with it's simultaneous movement system was interesting. I wonder what they're going to do with this one.

You liked Gladius too? <3

"Oh, just send Ludo out into the crowd. He'll Riposte them to death."
^ I give terrible advice. Ludo got in zero attacks and died in four hits. XD

I'd prefer 2d sprites on a 3d landscape. Those 3d characters don't look all that great. Maybe it's because it's a downloadable game.

I have nothing pertinent to add about Vandal Hearts, but just wanted to say that you're not alone. I've been trying to convince people that Gladius is the greatest TRPG of all time for years and years now (though that has changed in recent months, as Valkyria Chronicles just barely edged it out).

I LOVE the first two games. The blood geysers when you kill an enemy?! CLASSIC! Also, it was one of the first times I remember seeing someone say "shit" in a console videogame.

Mention of Vandal Hearts piqued my interest. Seeing a screenshot featured tweens in a setting that had been more mature? Now I feel pretty ho-hum on the whole thing. It reminds me too much how FFT went from intriguing war-driven storyline to 'hey, this book takes me to magical worlds!'. Nuh-uh, not again.

Thanks, but no thanks, Konami.

I have Vandal Hearts 2. Just how expensive is a PAL copy of the game?
Trevor McGee's Avatar - Comment posted on 04/13/2009 17:41

The cheapest Vandal Hearts 2 I've seen, for a NA version mind you, is about $34.99 to $36.99. Hell, even the stratagey guides are expensive as hell, between around $45 to $60. They're considered rare now.

OMGOMGOMGOMGOMGOMGOMGOMGOMG!!!

I never in my wildest dreams thought I could play another Vandal Hearts. I played the first two quite a bit, and I'm sure I still have my copies... somewhere... I'm going to look as soon as I get home.

Also, Gladius was fucking awesome. I kicked so much ass with my undead guy and the big imperial dudes.
