Preview: Star Fox 64 3D photo

Its been fourteen years since Peppy first told us to do a barrel roll on the Nintendo 64. Now he and all your other space critter friends are back, in another dimension to boot.

The original Star Fox 64 introduced a bevy of new features, such as fully-spoken voice acting and full three dimensional graphics. The remake follows suit, and asks you to get into the cockpit one more time and take to the skies using the new features unique to the 3DS.

Star Fox 64 3D (3DS)
Developer: Nintendo EAD
Publisher: Nintendo
Release date: September 11, 2011

The first and most notable change to the remake is it's graphical overhaul. I've always considered that the fifth generation of consoles the ugly stepchild in terms of graphics, because let's face it, all the obtuse polygons attempting realism when realism was still way out of reach sometimes resulted in terrible visuals. Thankfully, the 3DS is very capable, though, and lends the game detail and depth a bit more in line (but not quite there) with what Star Fox Adventures offered visually. Water, specifically, is particularly impressive as it shines and glimmers as the waves rise and fall.

True to form, being the graphics junkie that I am, I marveled over the visual update while my Arwing was getting its butt kicked by my rivals. Star Fox 64 3D features a local wireless multiplayer that allows up to four people to play off a single cartridge. There are different modes available depending on how you like to play multiplayer matches. There's a mode for points (first to X amount of kills wins), and a mode based on a time limit, for example. Each of these can be configured to define preferences within that mode, from level select to specific win conditions within that mode. Someone like me, who is terrible at the game, might be interested in knowing that handicaps can be set.

Once those things were decided upon, I was able to experience some of the new features in the multiplayer. I tried out the gyroscope controls, which allow you to direct your aircraft by tilting the 3DS. This might be of interest to those of you that tend to really get into your games and tend to physically move in the same direction you are commanding your avatar. I phrase it that way because I didn't find that the option added something that the normal controls didn't already provide in a more precise format, nor did I notice that anyone playing the game actually used these controls despite having the option. Still, the option is there should that be your thing; it's not mine so it made no difference or impression upon me after trying them out for a bit.

Fellow combatants on the battlefield are particularly visible given that every aircraft has a face attached to it thanks to the 3DS camera. While a seemingly inane inclusion, seeing your rival's mug every time they destroy your ship definitely fuels the competitive spirit. The winning screen is of particular note, because the crowned winner has the opportunity to gloat over the poor, unskilled plebs in fourth, third and second place.

Combat is fast-paced and intense. Players fly about the landscape while picking up power ups, which give you special ammo and abilities, and can also collect rings to restore health. Having humans at the helm means that actually hitting someone else can sometimes be tricky, though thankfully players have the ability to lock onto other ships. Still, with rings to restore health and power ups such as a force field at your disposal, taking someone out isn't always simple task, especially if they know how to fly an Arwing half-decently.

Aside from multiplayer, there's the ability to play something like a score/time attack mode. Stages are denoted by planets and can be visited in whatever order one wants. Like most modes similar of this ilk, players can revisit earlier stages and attempt to achieve higher scores or faster times.

So far Star Fox 64 3D is looking like a solid, if not safe revisit of an earlier classic that offers a few new features in a prettier, but still familiar package.

Desperate people buy 40 dollar ports of 13 year old games with little to no extra content

3 avatarless comments in a row? I haven't seen that since I first joined the site, and Jim had just started to get really big around these parts.

Get it, ErectMeat? "Big"?

I wanna play it, but not for $40. How about I pay $20, Nintendo. I'll buy it for $20, that work for you?

No online multiplayer... I don't think anymore needs to be said.

@deaddays

I don't think that works for nintendo. They never drop the price of their games.

I guess putting out improved versions of old games isn't necessarily a bad thing, because the 3ds has little else going for it, but nintendo shouldn't also be milking for money at the same time. Pretty much every game nintendo put out so far for 3ds should have been 20 dollars. Steel diver was short, pilot wings was short and reused wii sorts resort graphics, nintendogs just added a cheap cat feature, and lazy ports are lazy

Hey, Patricia! Nice preview on the technical side, but I think you should try and show some personality, no offense.

On topic: so many lost opportunities with this remake. So far no online games for 3DS announced and here we have one that would've played magnificently.

Also, graphics not on par with Star Fox Adventures? I thought the 3DS was supposed to be just as powerful. This port just screams "lazy-ass developing" all over.

@Braulio
I thought Ocarina of Time would be a lazy port as well, until I got my hands on it, and it looked pretty amazing.

So far I'm not seeing the same care put into Starfox 64, but I hope I'm wrong.

@Cryotek

I hear ya. The 3DS is getting alot of flack due to the only good games worth owning on it are ports. They should have had original titles during the launch months and remakes later on, IMO.

I'm still pissed that this doesn't even have online multiplayer. The face camera thing just makes no sense to me if the people are sitting right next to me. I would buy it if it did have online capabilities.

I think you need a proof reader. Near the very beginning of the article you make the grammatical error "it's" which makes it hard for me to care what you have to say if you're going to be lazy when you write it.

The more I look at screens of the 3ds, the more I have to ask the question, Why isn't the 3ds more powerful then the gamecube?

@Mags - I didn't think Ocarina looked that great from the screens, but in hand, it's beautiful. Hopefully we'll see some of the same when Star Fox finally hits. I didn't get much time with 64 back in the day, but I played the shit out of the SNES version.

I'm actually pretty excited about this title. Things are looking rough for the 3DS right now, but if they keep it up with 1st Party games like this I'll be happy to support them.

Looks great already. The difference beetween OCarina 3D screenshots and the thing actually running in full 3D is absurd. If the same can be expected for this one, then I'll be inclined to say it's worth every cent of the 40 bucks. It's still one of the most accessible and fun 3D shooters ever released and having the graphics fully reworked, on the go and in 3D sells it for me, honestly.

The 3DS is starting to look like they should have named the device N64P3D for portable 3D version of the N64.

That being said, I still wanna play this game. I can't find ny N64 to play the old version and the N64 emulator on android sucks.

And in place of the canceled MM Legends 3, Capcom and Nintendo can release Mega Man 3DS, the 3DS version of Mega Man 64.
