There's the Player mode, which only allows you to control one avatar who can talk and move and dictate actions, but can't personally change the world.
Then there's the Controller mode, where you can literally control everything else in the world that isn't the player.
For instance: the Player moves over to a glass of water, clicks the "action" button, and types "drink." The Controller then has thirty seconds to make a sprite of the character drinking the water. The Player makes their intentions known, and the Controller actually effects them in the game world.

It would have been if Rohrer had absolutely insisted on having Frank bitch about his wife, to the point of forbidding me from entering the church when I wanted to. Thankfully, he didn't; he seemed to know when to give me what I wanted, and when to complicate things (like when the priest got out of the car) without those complications feeling arbitrary or confining.
Granted, the scene where Frank shoots the altar boy did feel like it was pretty much entirely out of my hands. Though, I could have shot Frank if I wanted to, I guess.
Looking forward to it.
Looks fun, it's like a game that can be different each time.
I am going to have some really messed up games with friends when this drops.
And I just pre-ordered it. Rohrer had me with his Presentation of what the game does, that's on the games site. I'm really looking forward to try this out. The idea is simply brilliant.
I hope the editor is not the choke-point of awesomeness. Did u already play around with the editor?
AHHHA found just enough.
i think you're preview of the controller element will seal the deal
Thoroughly enjoyed the story.
Btw only a mater of time before Heavy Rain gets reimagined :D Or any other game for that matter.
Where did you read it was online?
I remember reading an article saying it wasn't, that you had to connect 2 laptops with a cable... =/
"Sleep Is Death is two-player only.
There is no single-player mode. It is easiest to play over a local network. Have a friend over and plug in two laptops, or play over local WiFi. It can be played remotely over the Internet, but you will need to send the other player your Internet address. Sleep Is Death works across most modern routers and firewalls. Instructions for remote Internet play are included. "
That should clear that up.
You could have checked that yourself, but hey, what shalls?
I'm not against it, though. I'm looking forward to it!
I guess the priest was secretly a wizard
One question I have, were there any indications of the timer being configurable?
I look forward to a write up about the controller mode since I'm more interested in that.
My highlights:
Naming yourself David Cage.
"Murder is disturbing."
Thinking the altar boy was a woman.
All in all, it was very funny/interesting/impressive stuff. I can see how Rohrer might have been aiming for something poignant in the beginning with all of the wife stuff, but you wouldn't have it and the story took a comedic turn. If you ever need a D-Toider for a test run, you've got one.
I'm showing this preview and the website to some friends so we can get to playing this when it comes out; some of them are big on D&D and I think they'd love this even more. Though I'm not sure if many of them are big on Indie games like me, so we'll see. Anyway, can't wait to see the other half as well.
Brilliance. £6.15 = Tremendous amount of potential.
I like the randomness, but if one person is expecting something at an a-grade level, you're probably going to end up with some novelty b-movie stuff and that kind of fun doesn't last too long. I'd actually go as far as to say it gets increasingly frustrating for both parties, bar one or two moments of genius.
Still, I haven't played it so I'm definately checking it out.
That out of the way, I hope to answer some questions with a brief description of our games.
Me, not feeling to creatively inclined, thought I would play this story with my current room mate. It didn't take long for him to shoot the priest, grab the candle, burn down the church. It went pretty straight forward, except he was in the interrogation room at the end.
My other room mate, his cop was the nervious one. He freaked out when the boy pulled the shot gun, had a nervious break down, climbed the church wall, then we got a little creative... he summoned a zeplin with a scroll of summoning (why not), then summoned a hot lady, and flew off. To try and stick it to him, I transformed the girl into satan, and he began to "suprise sex" him. We were all very pleased with this ending.
You are able to go into the game, and simply "delete" clothes, and voala, skin is already there underneath them. (Yes, it is /very/ detailed @_@)
In another round, we tried a whole adam-and-eve thing. But my room mates are unruly and disturbing. It ended up with abraham lincoln getting raped, turning a shot gun on a child, adam being a time traveler from the future, and breasts causing 9/11. I would get into the details, but it REALLY is a long story.
This game can not be played in NWN (when could you rape lincoln in less than 30 seconds in NWN?)
30 seconds is not enough time for the controller. 9/10 times it was, but every now and then (ex: I want to keep the sink on and flood the house) you would need a minute to a minute and a half (which is still fast).
30 seconds is enough for the player.
At no point at all were we "bored" waiting.
The game will be open source (what kind of definition are you using for open source?!). I plan on making it support up to 4 players at least, and will release the source and binaries for that as well. My room mate basically wants to make v1.alex and will probably keep it in our circle.
Trust me, this is a great game and I recommend you pre-order it.
Also, for those D&D fans, after my room mate was like "Take candle", he asked "Do I have an inventory?" I was like "Uhhh, yeah. Give me a minute" I dragged in some grey tiles at the bottom of the screen, looked like 8 slots for items, I dragged in a candle, and ended my turn. He saw it and was like "Sweet!" and we continued our game.
Hah, pretty slick!
I guess "Sleep is Death" refers to the 30-second time limit... like a comedian or actor "dying on stage."
