After seeing Cursed Mountain at Deep Silver's press event, I also got a chance to spend some time with Risen, a PC/360 fantasy RPG that's apparently banned in Australia. Before going into this, I knew about as much as we had posted already, which is to say not that much. Thankfully, all the other journalists in the room were in the same boat, so we got a nice full walkthrough on the title.

Like many in the fantasy genre, this RPG has you rise as a nameless hero from the rubble of a shipwreck to become a man of legend. Yes, I realize it sounds like Fable or any number of other stories, but when it comes to the fantasty genre, it's all about execution.

Want to know how the game is? There's only one way to find out.

Risen (PC, Xbox 360)
Developed by: Piranha Bites
Published by: Deep Silver
To be released: October 2, 2009

Waking up from the ruins of a shipwreck, you, the nameless hero, find yourself on the shores of the island Faranga, with your crewmates' bodies scattered about you. Mourning is too easy to do, so it's high time to loot the bodies and gather whatever items you can to set out on this adventure. Of course, one of them isn't quite dead, and so you now have a female companion to follow you to the city on the island.

Getting there, you find out that mysterious ruins have cropped up all over the island, and with them a number of beasts have started roaming the countryside. Of course, the Inquisition -- the police-like force of the game -- have put the city on lockdown while they try to investigate.

At this point, Risen opens itself up to let the player go about and choose their path. The player can join one of three guilds: The Bandits, the Inquisitors, or the Mages, and proceed on their merry way through the story. Each of the guilds offer their own sets of skills and attributes that they focus on, and it's up to the player to craft their character as they see fit. Before you sign your life away to one of the guilds, you can sample each one, learning a wide base of skills -- you can actually spend a majority of the game without joining any of the guilds, but there is a turning point where you're forced to join one of them.

While I'm not a connoisseur of fantasy RPGs, especially Western-style ones, the feeling that most potently struck me was that this reminded me a bit of Guild Wars in terms of the look and feel of things. You've got a quickslot bar, like in most games, to equip your spells and potions, leaving your attacks to mouse/controller commands. There are a wide variety of tactics at your disposal, such as casting a "Joke" spell to disable a guard in a fit of laughter, or make people forget you're wanted for murder because, hey, you seem like a nice guy.

One of the things I noticed about the game during the playthrough was that its environment was extremely lush, vibrant, and varied. In my mind, I was holding this up against my memories of The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion, and Rising comes across as something that's full of color, yet not on a level that's cartoonish or whimsical. Monster designs and all that turned out well from the limited exposure I've had from them.

Since I'm not very big into the Western RPG landscape, my concern is how this title is going to try and attract a larger audience than the currently existing fanbase. To me, there was no apparent draw that was especially innovative in the title. It's well-built, and that might be what they're looking for with the title -- if that's the case, then they're certainly on the right track. They've got a solid story, a good engine around it, and something that should be a fun and enjoyable experience -- but if they're looking to draw in a new audience for the title, such as people who traditionally play J-RPGs or even non-RPG players, those elements aren't there.

There's still some time until the game's October 2nd release, but as with any RPG, the real test of the game is how the combat plays for extended periods of time and how the story unfolds, develops, and draws us into the characters. Those are things I couldn't judge from my time with the game, but I'm looking forward to getting a chance to play this title once it hits shelves.

One question: is this in first or third person? I'm assuming the answer to be third though the ability to choose would be nice.

This game is done by the German guys behind the Gothic series, so there is at least one big fan base in Germany. I'm curious if this game will be as buggy as every single previous game. I really hope they've learned their lesson.

The monsters and environments look great, but all of the character models I've seen look like ass. Also, the text appears in a letterboxed bar on the top of the screen with a very bland font type. Check out what I'm talking about here: http://www.worthplaying.com/article.php?sid=65096

I want to like this game more but there's got to be some hook to differentiate it from the other great RPGs to be released this fall like Dragon Age: Origins, Alpha Protocol, and Brutal Legend. Let's see some gameplay videos!

This game looks interesting and if it is made by the guys behind the Gothic series it should be a pretty fun game.

This is gonna be a great season for western rpgs! (hopefully)

Good job!

As everybody said, it comes from germany, so there will be a lot of people buying it. If I had the money and the PC for it I would buy it too!

Just one thing, Gothic came long before Fable!

Uncanny. I was just going to say "this sounds like Gothic!" when j-xar mentioned the game's pedigree.

I skipped the mess that was (apparently?) Gothic 3, so my fond memories of the first and second games in the series are more than enough to get me interested in this. The combat wasn't particularly solid in either one of those titles, but they're probably the most fully-realized worlds I've ever seen in CRPGs.

Not to mention the prison camp scenario in Gothic 1 let you play an utter asshole.

You must have a pretty ass, comparing it to the game.
I dont know what you want this game looks absolutly fantastic! Iam so sik of JRPGs, with all its stereotypes an turn based fighting its everytime the same, i want to puke!

Dragon Age: Origins a great game iam looking forward to but its no action-rpg! Action rpg, for me, is a game where every push on the attack button causes an single swords hack on the screen.
Not like, iam targeting on an enemy, pushing a button and the hero attacks by its own and fights, till dead of whomsoever and iam forced to watch and degraded to manage only the mana health potions during the fight. Boring!
I hate those comand/fight/watch system. I like to chop by my own! Risen uses this direct button hack system, other than Dragon age.

Alpha Protocol is a shooter-rpg(also looking forward to) where you play an merc/spy what has this to do with an medieval like fantasy action rpg?

Brutal Legend is a action adventure no rpg game

Not mentioning Gothic in the preview is pretty silly. If those games are anything to go by, this could be an amazingly open an deep RPG with real consequence and morality... of course it might also be somewhat glitchy, if those games are anything to go by. Especially on 360 I would worry about bugs and performance... get this on PC if you can.

This game is from the developers of Gothic, but is a new IP. Great write up though, good to read :)

The voice cast has now been announced on the official blog.
Looks like a great cast with British talent - Andy Serkis and John Rhys Davies, to name just two..

Gamefly now lists this game for Xbox360 as: Risen (cancelled). Not rentable. No rating. Not for sale.

I haven't found any article online confirming it. Haven't yet tried the official website. (applies palm to face at self)

Fantastic game. Graphics are great, voice acting is great, exploration possibilities are amazing, and the combat and animations are fantastic. It's everything Gothic 3 should have been. I highly recommend it.

This game looks freaking awesome. Why in the hell would it be banned here in Aus? Oh for "incentivizing sex and drugs"...cmon. There is so many parralels to this sort of stuff in all forms on mainstream media it's not funny. OFLC are a joke!
