Preview: New Xbox Experience (Xbox 360) photo

Awhile back, Microsoft gave me the opportunity to update my retail Xbox 360 to the "New Xbox Experience," a new operating system that changes the look and feel of what was formerly known as the "Dashboard."

I had seen it in action at the Tokyo Game Show, when Microsoft's Aaron Greenberg gave me a personal walkthrough of the update. It looked pretty and certainly functional, and while Greenberg talked it up all nice, I wasn't entirely sold that it was better.

Well, whether you like it or not, it's coming on November 19. But after two weeks of letting it sink in, one thing is definitely clear -- the New Xbox Experience is an improvement on the now old-and-busted-looking "dashboard."

Hit the jump for positives and negatives I took away from my time with NXE.

THE LOOK AND USABILITY

+ It's far more colorful than the old Dashboard, with many new visual elements that make it pop. When browsing Xbox LIVE Arcade titles on the marketplace, you'll see fancy box art; when selecting most titles, you have the option to view a full description, as well as view high resolution screenshots, and more.

+ Because it's so visual, it's easier to find what you're looking for in any given menu. It might take awhile to adapt to the new menus, but once you do, you'll find that navigation is far smoother and much easier.

+ If you hate the new look (you probably won't), hitting the Xbox 360 guide button on your controller will bring up a streamlined menu system that looks suspiciously like the old dashboard. This is a good thing and comes in handy when you want quickly launch a game or check your friends list.

+ If friends are playing a game when you first boot it up, you'll get a quick notification letting you know. This is particularly useful for multiplayer titles.

- When a notification pops up to tell you a friend is online, pressing the Xbox 360 guide button will no longer immediately bring you to your friends information. This makes spying on people much more difficult. Also, although the aforementioned "Friends playing X game" notification is nice, pressing the guide button immediately just brings up a list of ALL of your friends playing any game; it would be more useful if it would only display friends playing the same game.

- The "Friends" menu that allows you to scroll through a visual "neighborhood" featuring your friends avatars (both online and off) is a novel idea, but a bit pointless.

- There's definitely a learning curve; when you first boot up the New Xbox Experience, it can be confusing. You're going to have to hunt the first time you want to download a demo or dig deep to get some downloadable content. While nearly everything is available at the clicks of a few buttons, you can get lost in some of the new menus if you don't know where you're going.

NETFLIX SUPPORT

+ This works as advertised, and will allow you to stream movies in your Netflix "watch it now" queue. After downloading the Netflix software, it spits out an activiation code that you must then enter at Netflix.com using a web browser. Once you do, your account is ready to go, and a horizontal view of "box art" for your queue is display.

+ The video controls should be familiar -- they're the same ones you use to control all media on the Xbox 360.

+ You can delete movies from your queue, rate movies, and see full descriptions through your Xbox 360.

+ Streaming quality is as good as you'd get on your computer using Netflix's on-demand service. (This, of course, depends on your net connection.)

- There's no way to add movies to your queue or browse movies you haven't added to your queue on the Xbox 360. Using this requires the use of a web browser to add and move things around; there's no built in functionality beyond viewing your queue. This, of course, could be updated in future iterations of the Netflix/360 software.

- Right now, Netflix doesn't stream high definition. So compared to other stuff you're probably watching on your Xbox 360, the quality hit is definitely noticeable. By the time the New Xbox Experience is available to the public, Netflix should be offering streaming HD movies (roughly 300 to start, from what I hear), and the Xbox 360 will support it. That's good news indeed.

AVATARS

+ There's a decent selection of body parts, hairs, and clothes to start. It's entirely possible to create a unique avatar and have a customized look. There's even a monocole immediately available for Jim "I Wear a Monocle For Some Reason" Sterling.

+ You can take a picture of your avatar to use as your Xbox 360 gamer picture. The avatar can be posed and what not, so you can show off your identity via your friends list.

- Good luck making something that looks like you. Despite the variety of parts available, I simply couldn't make a reasonable facsimile of myself. The only option is going to be going in the completely opposite direction -- making a completely off the wall avatar, fans and all. A zombie, perhaps?

- My wife's complaint: the girl's clothing options suck. She even noted that the dress pictured used as an icon for the dress menu wasn't even available (and it was the one she wanted to use).

INSTALLING GAMES TO YOUR HARD DRIVE

+ This is a relatively fast and easy process that can be done for any Xbox 360 (theoretically, although I didn't try my entire library).

+ When a game is installed, the Xbox 360 is much, much quieter when playing. It will not sound like a jet engine. It is, I must say, quite fantastic.

+ I didn't bust out a stopwatch, but the difference in load times is noticeable. As much as I loved the statistics Fallout 3 shows you during loading screens, I spent far less time looking at them after I installed the game.

- Not a huge hairy deal, but you still need to have to the physical disc in the drive to play the game.

- Fallout 3 took up 5.3 gigs; depending on the size of your hard drive, it could fill up fast. And Microsoft's ridiculous and expensive proprietary hard drive solution means some gamers might still be stuck with a 20 gig unit (or have no hard drive at all).

--

A lot of what the New Xbox Experience offers is community and social functionality, like parties and games that take advantage of the avatars. Unfortunately, because it hasn't officially launched yet, I didn't get a chance to play around with those new features.

But the basic functionality of the Xbox 360 has most definitely been improved. Overall, everything moves much smoother and quicker, and it's way damned prettier than it was before. And don't be afraid of the avatars, either. While they may seem gimmicky (and they arguably are), they will in no way get in the way of your "hardcore" gaming experience; besides seeing it on the screen when you boot up, it almost never gets in your way ... unless, of course, you want it to.

The New Xbox Experience update will be available on November 19.

Excellent, thanks for the impressions. My Netflix instant watch queue is already filled with a ridiculous number of titles I'll finally get a chance to check out.

This seems pretty cool, but what happens to the theme you have set up for your dashboard? I'd hate to lose mine after I just picked up the megaman 9 one.

Molecules aren't "for some reason"....but are reserved for British lords and gentlemen.

I don't want to sound like a leaky faucet, but I could care less about "New experiences" until my current experience, ala my Xbox 360 stops frying motherboards. I couldn't try this if I wanted to since my console is in the shop, hope it's up and running by mid November.

So the Netflix service works the same as it would if you have the "Watch It Now" service routed to your tv.

I'm absolutely dying to install games as my drive has gone to shit lately and will croak out on me at the worst of times. Hopefully that works out...but with my HD filling up with RB content I prolly won't have enough space sooner than later.

I'm curious as to what the new display settings are. I hear there are quite a few. This is great for a dumbass who bought a 16:10 HDTV. You have no idea how shitty Halo looks without antialaising. Dear god.

The thing I was waiting for was the HDD transfer. Sounds like I'll need to upgrade mine (I've got a 20GB), but hey...that's what Christmas is for.

First one to be transferred...Fable 2. I can tolerate the load-times, but the constant disc-drive noise gets me a little worried.

I've liked the look of this from the start, and am eager to give it a go, but since there's no Netflix in the UK, it's far far less useful than it otherwise would have been.

@Nick:

What about the functionality speed? Like it is now, whenever I pull up my guide button(in game) it lags forever before I can get it to go away. Is this something that the NXE addresses?

@obshaky

Haha no to most of that. kinda...lets see..I had long hair in high school but it was more of a "I think I look sexy" thing rather than a goth/metal thing (emo wasn't around yet, also I was wrong. It wasn't sexy) I like all kinds of music, don't really adhere to a single genre. But I love D&D though I suck at role playing and so rarely play with the people that I know that do play.

I posted my message and immediately regretted it. Sometimes I over generalize. I guess I'm just not sold on the NBE. Seems like MS is touting this as an improved user experience. I'm just not sold and I think my current dashboard works just fine.

What gets me is the danged avatars. I really would like to turn it off or ignore it when it appears on my NBE but MS has said we have to use them. I forget what article it was but I saw it here. It was on the internet so its true right?!

Actually I am happy they changed that... I found it rather annoying to accidentally end up on a friend's profile page, when all I really wanted to do was check in on all my friends. Also, I like to see what everyone is playing so I can decide if I want to switch it up and join them.

20GB wouldn't be too bad if they didn't use nearly half the storage up for god-knows-what.

Deleting everything but a few XBLA games and before Rockband I had 11GB free. It's obviously less now so I figure I'll only have enough room for one game downloaded onto the hdd at once.

Sadness :(

I'm pretty excited for this, as I'm getting pretty tired of looking at the old dashboard. I'll have to see for myself if I actually like the new look better, but I'm sure I'll be able to deal with it if I don't.

The game install option will be the coolest part of this for me, because my 360 is RIGHT next to my monitor (and a foot or two away from me), so the disc spinning does get on my nerves sometimes. It'd be REALLY cool if I could run the games from my hard drive without the need for the disc at all (like Xbox Originals), but I know it'd be too easy to install and sell off your hard copies....

I like all of the netflix support and being able to intall your games to the hard drive but I hate the avatars. All they are are money makers. Your really not going to be able to make your guy look very cool unless you spend money. It would have been a neat idea though to be rewarded clothes for getting certain achievements on games. Like getting a certain achievements on Fallout would give your guy a fallout jacket or t shirt or maybe even one of those masks.

Im really looking forward to this. I extremely dislike the current menu system, in particular how slow it is and how laggy moving around with the controller feels, but also how its fairly ugly, mostly badly set out... ill stop there :P.

Its a pity they cant straight rip off sony's xmb menus (which are fantastic to use) but any improvement is good.

Now all they have to do is give us a better the 20 gig hard drive for a price that isn't almost the cost of the console (hey thanks for screwing your early adopters MS). I like the idea of optional hard drive installs but I'm disappointed that it's going to be a pain in the ass shuffling my hard drive files around.

Argh, spambot.
Anyway, I actually agree with Danmartigan. I hated when I would push the guide button at the same time that my 360 would tell me one of my friends was online, and their profile would pop-up. This especially frustrates me at times when I go to push the guide button again to close my friends profile, but by that time my 360 decides to tell me that I have ANOTHER friend online. Thus resulting in the 360 closing my first friends profile, only to open that of my second friend.

Also, I have no room on my 20 gig HDD left. Maybe enough for one game install if I delete my demos, so I don't think this feature will be too useful to me until MS releases an update to free up the 7 or so gigs of space on my HDD that I've never been able to use. I had already deleted my TV shows (of course they had to go release all the episodes of South Park online for free AFTER I had already downloaded some of my favorites) off of my hard drive a couple of months ago, but that space has since been taken up again. I might consider getting the 60GB Live Pack since it comes with 3 months of Live, which at least helps to offset the price a bit. Don't think I'd ever spend $150 for the 120 gig though.

I'll most likely install the Orange Box and Lost Odyssey more than my other games. I don't like long load times in my Half-Life and RPGs.

Also, I like the idea of my 360 not sounding like some turbine when playing games.
